Summary
The book is about a 15-year-old girl named Jem, who has a gift. Whenever she looks into someone’s eyes she can see the date when that person is going to die. Jem tries to avoid making friends, but when she meets Spider, a boy from her school, it gets really hard not to talk to him, although she knows Spider is going to die in a few months. They start to spend more and more time together, and one day they go to the London Eye. Jem sees in the eyes of tourists all the same numbers: something is going to happen today. They run away at the moment the London Eye explodes, but for the people there that makes them look like terrorists. With everyone searching for them, Jem and Spider decide to run away. They travel a long time but then Spider gets taken by the police, 3 days before he’s going to die. Jem doesn’t know how to find Spider, and more and more police is starting to follow her. In the end, she goes into a church where she is protected and she tells the police she will give information if they bring Spider back. They do, but when she and Spider go to the roof of the church Spider falls off and dies. Jem becomes depressive and doesn’t talk to anyone anymore. She’s pregnant from Spider and when her son, Adam, is born, she loses her gift. In the end of the book it turns out that Adam can see numbers too.
