In de tweede een keer toen een docent aardrijkskunde zei dat ik ‘weer eens’ niet had geleerd voor mijn toets terwijl ik dat 100% zeker weten wel had gedaan!

Het vindt plaats in Harlem, eind jaren zestig.

Het grote probleem in het boek is dat Fonny vals beschuldigt wordt en in de gevangenis zit. Daarnaast is zijn vriendin Tish ook nog eens zwanger.

Dat is een sort groet van de afro-amerikanen die in deze tijd in opstand zijn.

Ze haat New York en ze praat er met veel afgunst over terwijl ze heel veel van Fonny houd en heel liefdevol over hem praat.

If any place is worse, I’ts got to be so close to hell that you can smell the people frying.

11. What does Tish mean by ‘Nobody ever asks the zebras’ (p. 17 / 10)?
Dat niemand zelf uitzoekt of ze van zebra’s houden, maar verbitterd aan hun vooroordelen voor zebra’s vasthouden.

12. How did Fonny and Tish meet the first time? How old were they?
Tish was zes en Fonny was negen, ze ontmoette elkaar op de straat. Daniel (Fonny’s vriend) en Geneva (Tish’ vriendin) kwamen in een gevecht en Tish en Fonny gingen zich ermee bemoeien. Tish sloeg Fonny met een stuk hout waarop een spijker zat en Fonny spuugde in haar gezicht.

13. ‘… Love and laughter come from the same place..’, Tish says on page 27/ 19. What place is that do you think?
Ik denk dat ze bedoelen dat het allebei van binnen komen. Dat het erg op elkaar lijkt, al je emoties hebben veel met elkaar te maken.

14. Saturdays differ from Sundays for families that live in Harlem. (p. 29-30/ 21-22). Explain why/how.
Op zaterdag komen de kinderen van school als hun vader thuis is. En tussen hun is een soort stille oorlog en dat maakt de moeders gek. Op zondag heeft iedereen weer vrede met elkaar en is iedereen vrolijk.

15. Does Tish like going to church with Fonny’s mother and sisters?
Nee, want ze gaat zelf nooit naar de kerk en ze kan niet goed overweg met Fonny’s moeder en zijn zussen.

16. Why does the visit make such a big impression on her? (p. 31-37/ 23-29)
Omdat iedereen daar helemaal uit hun dak ging. Ze zongen en huilde, danste en gilde.

Ze vergelijkt de kerk met de gevangenis waar Fonny in zit.
