Summary

The story is about a ward, wich is ruled with iron hands by ‘the Big Nurse’ (Mrs Ratched)Chief Bromden (a big half Indian man, who lets everybody think he’s deaf and dumb) knows everything of the ward, he has been there for years. Then there comes a new patient, Mc Murphy. He is a big, and almost always laughing. He tries to manipulate the rules and to break down the dictatorship of the Big Nurse. Because of him patients get there self-confidence back. Also the chief, McMurphy finds out he isn’t deaf and makes the chief almost ‘a normal man’. McMurphy seems to win from the nurse. But Chief and McMurphy are sent to Disturbed Ward (Where patients get shocktherapie) and every time McMurphy acts normally again, he get a new therapie. When he gets back on the ward, they have a secret party at night. After that he gets a brainoperation, so he will become a hothouseplant. Chief doesn’t grant the Big Nurse this triompf and kills McMurphy, also because McMurphy would never wants to live like that. Chief flees and is free again.

Own Opinion

The beginning of the story is verry long-winded. But when part two starts, it gets very interresting and you are carried along in the story. It becomes a beautiful, emotional and exiting story. I loved it and I’m glad I read it.

Het perspectief;

In het boek: In het boek wordt alles verteld door Chief Bromden. Je leest ook over zijn mening en gevoelens over wat er op de afdeling gebeurt.
In de film: In de film lag het perspectief bij Mc Murphy, hoewel dat minder duidelijk aanwezig is als in het boek. Je ziet alleen gebeurtenissen, ook waar Mc Murphy niet bij is en dat is anders als in het boek; daar zit je als het ware in zijn hoofd en zie je wat hij ziet en voel je wat hij voelt.
Ik denk dat ze er bewust voor hebben gekozen bij de regie van de film, om het perspectief bij Mc Murphy te leggen in plaats van bij Chief Broomden, omdat je in een film veel moeilijker gedachten kunt uitbeelden en dus afhankelijker bent van de gebeurtenissen. In een film vormen meestal de gebeurtenissen het verhaal. Aangezien het verhaal over Mc Murphy gaat en de meeste gebeurtenissen(ook in het boek) ook, kun je zo de hoofdlijnen van het verhaal beter naar voren brengen

Personages

In het boek speelt Chief Bromden een heel belangrijke personage, samen met McMurphy is hij de hoofdpersoon. In de film is hij helemaal niet belangrijk, totdat hij McMurpy vermoordt en vlucht. Hierdoor is de film verwarrender, want in de hele film was McMurphy de hoofdpersoon en dan in eens niet meer.

Ik vond het boek veel mooier en meeslepender dan de film, omdat in de film de spanning tussen de Big Nurse en Mc Murphy veel minder goed opgebouwd wordt. Ook lukt het ze in de film veel minder goed om te laten zien hoe de Big Nurse de afdeling leidt.
