Is it better to have a small or a large age difference between siblings?
Siblings often have a relatively big age gap, because most parents don’t want to deal with two babies at the same time. But is this a good thing?
If siblings have a large age gap, they’re not likely to be very close. This is of course not always the case, but older siblings who have a sister or brother who’s much younger than them often look down upon their sibling. The older sibling wouldn’t want to hang out with the younger sibling, because they’ve got to hang out with friends or parties to attend to. But there are some good sides to it, for example: the older sibling will feel the need to take care of their younger sibling, have some bonding time. The older sibling will have a lot of life experience and the younger sibling could ask them for advice.
If you’re close in age, you and your sibling will compete a lot. For your parents validation, or who gets to shotgun on the roadtrip, who gets to go out and who has to babysit. That could be hard on the both of you, but you’ll also be more likely to be close with them. You mostly share the same experiences, and likely go to the same school.
So is it better to have a close or a large age gap between siblings? When you really think about it, it doesn’t matter. If you pro-con this whole thing, there’s good and bad to both of them. You’ve just got to be lucky enough to have a nice sibling!
