I Formalities:
The title of the book I read is “Oliver Twist” and by my opinion it is a historical novel. Charles Dickens writes the book in the year 1839, it is also the year the novel was first published. Other books of this author are Great Expectations, Nicholas Nickleby, etc. If I had the opportunity I would ask Charles Dickens if Oliver Twist is a real boy or if he is made up by Dicken's imagination.

II Plot:
On The Right Way

Oliver Twist is an orphan. In his first years Mr and Mrs Bumble raised him and they put him in a workhouse. When something happened they placed him by Mr and Mrs Sowerberry as man-servant. Because of the bad situation he ran away to London. In London he met Mr Fagin. Mr Fagin taught him how to rob people. The first time Oliver went pocket-picking he was arrested. The men he robbed – Mr Brownlow - took him to his house. After a while employees of Mr Fagin kidnapped him off the street and brought him back. During his next odd job something went wrong and they were caught in the action. After some struggle a very nice lady got him to her place. She felt sorry for him and took a search after his relatives. She came in contact with Mr Brownlow and he wanted to raise him for the rest of his life.

The love he received from Mr Brownlow makes me think the most of my own life, because I also live in very happy family.

III Setting:
The story of Oliver takes place in the middle part of the 19th century in England. I think it is a realistic story. The nicest part in the book is the instance where Oliver first met Mr Brownlow. In that time he was very ill and weak and Mr Brownlow gave him strength to move on with his life.

IV Characterisation:
The three main characters in the story are: Oliver Twist, Mr. Brownlow and Mr Fagin.
Oliver Twist is an orphan, a weak and young child. He is also susceptible to influence of adults.
Mr Brownlow is a rich older men who, from the first moment on, felt that Oliver was a fine lad.
Mr Fagin is an old “Jew” who manages a gang of young pickpockets for his own profit.

I like Mr Brownlow to most because he takes Oliver Twist lovely in his house. Mr Fagin instead I dislike because he uses children for his own benefit.

V Title:
The whole novel turns on the life of the central figure Oliver Twist. It is well-chosen because after reading to book the title and the contents of the novel stays for always in your mind.

VI Theme:
In the beginning it shows that Oliver Twist started to go down a bad path. Because of his attitude and because he meets the right people that doesn’t happen.

The message of the author is that you must have faith in your self and in humanity.
I can find myself drawn to this idea because I experience the same in my own life.

VII Evaluation:
Dear (naam),

I read a book I want to tell you about. The title is Oliver Twist and Charles Dickens wrote it. The nicest parts of the book contain the first stay with Mr Fagin and afterwards his first meeting with Mr Brownlow. I show you a very nice passage in the novel: “At Mr Brownlow’s house a bed was quickly prepared for Oliver and he was carefully and comfortably laid in it; here he was looked after with a kindness that knew no bounds.”
Especially this passage I like the most because it says how nice Mr Brownlow is.
The were some parts I didn’t like and that was the part when Mr Sikes and Nancy, employees of Mr Fagin, took Oliver away from Mr Brownlow and brought him back to steal again.

Yours,

(je naam)

VIII Personal response:
B:
Dear Oliver Twist,

In this letter I want to warn you of Mr Fagin, Mr Sikes and Nancy. They feel nothing for you and bring you on the wrong side of the road.
If I were you I would have done some things differently than you. For example I should have left Mr Fagin sooner and went back to Mr Brownlow because Mr Brownlow cares better for you then Mr Fagin and his employees.
Now you must live your life with Mr Brownlow and you must stay there forever and never fall in the arms of Mr Fagin again.

Yours,

(je naam)

C:
Oliver Twist is a boy who's mother died giving birth to him. In his childhood he grew up with Mr and Mrs Bumble. When he reached the age of ten his education became too expensive for Mr and Mrs Bumble. With pain in their hearts they put him in a workhouse.

Oliver was very unhappy there. After the lads incited him to do so, he asked for more food. When he did that they kicked him out of the workhouse and he had to take care of himself. He asked Mr and Mrs Bumble for help and Mr Bumble looked for an other workhouse, were he could work as a domestic drudge.

After a big struggle with a friend of his master, his boss locked him up in the cellar. Luckily he could get away and went to London by foot. On his way to London he met a man who knew an address he could stay at in London. Over there he ended up with Mr Fagin (the Jew). In Mr Fagin's house he rested for a while and recovered his strength. Mr Fagin was, however, a pickpocket and a thief and he taught  Oliver how to rob people.

Oliver's first criminal act was to rob an older man, Mr Brownlow, who just came out of a bookstore. He noticed and called the police. After some time he was arrested. At the police station the supervisor asked himself what to do with such a young and weak lad. Mr Brownlow offered him to bring Oliver up. Oliver wanted this very badly. After a few days, when he had recovered his strength, he had to bring a book to the bookstore and Mr Brownlow gave him five pounds.

On the way Mr Sikes and Nancy (friends of Mr Fagin) took him back to The Jew. Mr Fagin was very disappointed in Oliver because he had given him food and brought him back on his feet when he needed it. So Oliver owns nothing himself and he had to steal again for Mr Fagin. Mr Brownlow stayed alone at home and was very disappointed.

On his first new robbery Mr Sikes went with him. They had to rob a house, they failed and were got in the act. Oliver could not get away and stayed behind in the cellar. The owners (two nice ladies) of the house discovered Oliver and they found him so weak and small that they also want to bring him up. Oliver told them his life story and they promised to look for Mr Brownlow.
After a long time they found Mr Brownlow and he was very happy to see Oliver again. Oliver and Mr Brownlow were reunited and were both very happy. Oliver then grows up like a normal boy and went to school.

Personally I liked the novel Oliver Twist, but it was also a emotional book. It was emotional because after a long sad way Oliver finally found happiness. It took a while for him to live the life he wanted. That was of course because he had no parents at all, which was very sad. Fortunatly the novel ends well. I would recommend this book, the story stays with you.
