But Oliver was leading there a terrible life as well.He had to work very hard so one day Oliver ran away.

Oliver roamed the streets, begging for food, until he had reached London. In London he met Jack Dawkins, a boy his age. Jack was very nice to him and took him to Fagin's, an old man, where many other boys of his age were where also living. But Fagin has trained the boys to steal and he sent them every day away to rob people. Oliver began to  know many people, especially criminals. Bill Sikes, a bad young man, came with his girlfriend Nancy many times to Fagin. Oliver liked Nancy because she treated him well. One day Oliver went out with Charley Bates and Jack Dawkins and he had seen them robbing a rich man who was watching the owner of a shop. The two boys ran away, but Oliver didn’t and the police caught him. But the owner of the shop went to the police and told them that Oliver was innocent.

Oliver was very happy when Mr. Brownlow, a friendly old man, decided to take Oliver with him and had planned to take care of him. He loved the old man and the old man trusted him. But when Mr. Brownlow sent Oliver to the bookshop, Oliver was kidnapped by Nancy and Bill Sikes and brought back to Fagin. He was very unhappy there. When Oliver had to break into a large house with Bill Sikes, they got caught. Bill Sikes and his helper ran away, but Oliver was shot.

Oliver had nursing care by the nice Rose Maylie and her aunt. He liked it there very much and healed very quickly. Meanwhile Nancy learned about Oliver ‘s history. At the risk of her own life, she eavesdroped on a conversation and went to Rose Maylie and Mr. Brownlow to tell them about the history of Oliver. Monks, a bad man, came to see Fagin and Nancy heard that Monks wanted Oliver to learn to steal. She told Rose Maylie and Mr. Brownlow that Monks knew the Oliver’s identity . Mr. Brownlow looked for Monks and found out that his real name was Edward Leeford, the son of an old friend of his.

Meanwhile had Fagin found out that Nancy had given some information and told that to Bill Sikes, who then killed Nancy. He ran away, but when he tried to escape he hanged himself by accident. Fagin an the rest of his gang were arrested. Meanwhile Monks told Mr. Brownlow that Oliver was his half-brother. Monks’ father was divorced and fell in love with a nineteen-year old girl. His father was very rich and when he died and all the money was for the nineteen years old girl. Just before he died his father had brought some stuff to Mr. Brownlow, including a beautiful painting of the girl. When his father died, the girl went away and came, completey weakened, to the workhouse where she gave birth to Oliver. Mr. Brownlow didn’t know this until he took Oliver home with him and saw the resemblances to the painting. Monks knew all this and tried to hide and kill Oliver  because otherwise he had to share the heritage. But now when Mr. Brownlow knew the story, he signed the papers to give Oliver a part of the heritage and ran away.

Mr. Brownlow had adopted Oliver and they moved into a house close to Rose Maylie. Finally Oliver’s wandering was over and now he was able to lead a happy and quiet live.
