Summary Divergent, Book
Language: English
Beatrice Proir lives in the Chicago of the furure. In this utopian society she lives in a world with five factions. You have the Abnegation, for the selfless people, Dauntless for brave people, Erudite for the smart people, Candor for the honest people and Amity for peaceful people. Each year all the 16-year-old from every faction have to do a test which designates which faction they should be in. Beatrice lives with her parents and brother in Abnegation. Even though she lives there, she doesn’t feel completely selfless. She is struggling with the norms and values of the Abnegation. The Abnegation have political power because they are selfless. (Only one really smart woman from erudite, Janine, is also in the government.) That means that they don’t want the power and will never act in favour of themselves. Beatrice’s father is an important political leader but not the most important, that is a man called Marcus. The Erudite believe that they should have the power because they are the intelligent ones.
Beatrice and her brother Caleb have to do the test this year. Even though Beatrice is struggling in Abnegation, she asks herself if she wants to leave her family. Beatrice does the test. She does the test with a woman from Dauntless, her name is Tori. In the test she first meets a dog. She does nothing to fight him but also nothing to be friends with the dog. De dog tries to attack a girl and Beatrice sacrifices herself, but when she can help a man in the bus she doesn’t help him. Her results are inconclusive. The test says she could be in Dauntless, Abnegation or Erudite. It’s very dangerous to have this kind of test results. So Tori erases her test and sends Beatrice home. Beatrice is Divergent, but she has no idea what that is and she has no idea what she should choose. She goes home. Her parents have a discussion about the government. It’s about Marcus. Janine and the other Erudite have been writing reports about Marcus. The reports says he has been abusing his son and that’s why he left the faction. Beatrice’s father says they only say this kind of thing because Janine wants power. The next day is the choosing ceremony. Caleb chooses Erudite, nobody saw that coming. Then Beatrice has to choose. She also changes faction, she chooses Dauntless.
She goes with the Dauntless people to the train. She has to jump on it. In the train she meets Christina. Christina is also a transfer but she comes from Candor. After the train they have to jump off a roof to gets into Dauntless headquarters. Beatrice is the first jumper and she gets to choose a name. She chooses Tris. The leader she first meets is Four, he is going to train the transfers. She also meets Eric who will be training the Dauntless born. There is going to be a ranking and the people who won’t be in the top 10 will be faction less. She meets the other transfers. Like Al and Will who become her friends and Peter, Molly and Drew who are not so friendly.
Stage one is physical. During their first training they learn how to fire a gun. When they have some spare time she goes to the tattoo shop with Christine, Al and Will and sees Tori again. Tori says she can’t help her with the fact that she is Divergent. She gets a tattoo of three ravens on her collarbone, one for each family member she left behind. The next day they have to fight each other. Tris doesn’t have to fight but Christina has to fight again Molly. Christine is struggling and she says she wants to stop. Eric becomes really angry he takes her to the Pitt. In the Pitt there is a ravine with a river. Christina has to hang above the river. She survives. The next day Tris has to fight against Peter. Peter beats her up so badly that she has to go to hospital.
After she recovered they have an excursion to the fence and learn about the jobs they can do when they have had the initiation. She sees an old friend from Abnegation who is Amity now. When they get back Four says to her that is isn’t smart to talk with people from other factions, he also helps her with fighting. She has to be first, only then can she win. The next day they go paintballing outside with the Dauntless born. She is in Four’s team. They go to a spot in the woods, there is a wheel. Tris climbs in the wheel to search for Eric’s team. She does that together with Four. She comes up with the best strategy and Christina (who is her teammate) catches the flag. Tris gets to know people who are Dauntless born, because before the paintball game they were separated. The next day they have to practise with knifes. Al hasn’t been doing well, he cries a lot and he isn’t doing well in practice. He is doing really badly with the knives and Eric wants him for a target. Four has to throw knifes at him. Tris gets mad and takes his place. Four hurts her ear and after that she gets really mad at him. The next day Molly, Peter and Drew are bullying her and rip her towel off. They call her Stiff which means that you’re from Abnegation. She gets so mad that the next fight, against Molly, she loses control and beat her up. She doesn’t feel guilty.
Visiting day. Tris is really nervous because she doesn’t know if it’s better when her parents come, or when they do not come. Because it would be really hard to see them, but also really hard to not see them. Tris’s mum arrives and asks Tris about her test result. Tris tells her that she is Divergent, her mum already expected that and tells that , after initiation, she has to go to Caleb in Erudite and tell him that he has to investigate the serum Janine makes. She can’t go because the tensions between Erudite and Abnegation have grown.
