Ranking day, the results of stage one. Tris is 6th and she is quite sure she can stay for stage two. Edward, a really strong boy is first. Al is  second but last. At night Drew and Peter stab Edward in the eye. Edward and his girlfriend leave Dauntless. They had rather be faction less.

After that night they have a day off. Uriah and some other Dauntless born people ask Tris to go with them to sail down a high building by a zip-line. Tris has a really good time with them.

Stage two begins, it is a simulation. The simulation knows what your fears are and creates them. Tris begins in a field and suddenly crows are attacking her, she has to stay calm. She tought she blew it but she did really well, a bit too well. The next day Peter is being really mean about an article about Tris’s father. She is really angry but she keeps calm. In the evening she meets Four when he is a bit drunk, he tells her she looks great. Tris is starting to like Four. The next day she has another simulation. She is in glass and she has to break free. She keeps thinking ‘this isn’t real’. She cracks the glass and Four finds out she is Divergent. Four erases her simulation. Tris goes to Tori for answers. This time Tori tells her a bit more. She tells Tris that her brother was Divergent and he has been killed by the leaders of Dauntless. She tells her that only Divergent people can feel that a simulation isn’t real and that they’re doing better than other people. She says that people who know thing about Divergents are people who are trying to kill them, or they have something (sometimes indirectly like Tori) to do with it.

A new ranking list, this one is for stage two. Tris is in first place, she is happy but she knows that this is really dangerous. The other transfers are jealous. She has some fun with Uriah, Marlene and Lynn. The Dauntless born are really happy for her. That night Peter, Drew and Al kidnap Tris in the middle of the night and take her to the cliff. She thinks they want to kill her. Four finds out and beats Drew up. Four talks with Tris and says she has to be more vulnerable, otherwise they will beat her up again or the leaders will catch her. The next day Tris is being more vulnerable and it works, Christina and Will aren’t jealous anymore. But Tris is really mad at Al. He is begging her to forgive him but she doesn’t. Al commits suicide. Even though she didn’t forgive him, she feels really sad.

Stage three is going to be a fear landscape, were she has to conquer all her fears. Four invites her to go through his fear landscape with him. Four is been called Four because he only has four fears (that’s really few). His fears are heights, shooting a woman, confinements and his father. His father has been abusing him. But Tris knows who Four’s father is, it is Marcus from Abnegation. She knew he had a son named Tobias. Now she knows Fours real name. She goes down to the river with Four after that. Four says to her that he isn’t Divergent but wanted to leave by Abnegation because of his father. After that they kiss. (finally)

When practice is not going well for Tris, she wants to go home. She decides to go to Caleb in Erudite. After she spoke to Caleb Janine caught her, she isn’t allowed to leave Dauntless headquarters. Eric is very angry with Tris when she gets back.

After that day she goes to her fear landscape and she finally can become Dauntless. In her fear landscape she has to conquer the crows, she is drowned in a sea, she gets burned in front of everyone, she is kidnapped, she is afraid of physical affection and lastly she has to shoot her family. But she prefers shooting herself, which is really selfless.

She has finished! But first she has to take a serum. She doesn’t really trust it but everyone else already took it, so she does too. She has some one on one time with Four and he shows his tattoo. After that the final results come on screen. Triss is first! She is so happy! After that they go to sleep. But in the middle of the night everybody gets up. They are sleepwalking but their eyes are open. Now Tris understands the serum. The Dauntless will be the army for Erudite against Abnegation. They jump on the train and Triss is copying the behaviour. But she sees that Tobias is awake too! He is also Divergent. Eric tries to shoot Tobias and that’s the point they show they aren’t sleepwalking. Tobias and Tris attack and run, but Tris is shot.

Tobias and Tris have to go to Janine. She is the one who wants all the Divergents dead. She has a new serum which also works on Divergents and gives it to Tobias. He goes to the computers who control all this, in the power of serum. Tris is going to be executed. But Tris’s mother saves her. Her mother explains more about being Divergent, because she is Divergent too: “’Every faction conditions its members to think and act a certain way. And most people do it. For most people, it’s not hard to learn, to find a pattern of taught that works and stays that way.’ She touches my uninjured shoulder and smiles. ‘But our minds move in a dozen different directions. We can’t be confined to one way of thinking and that terrifies leaders. It means we can’t be controlled. And it means that no matter what they do, we will always cause trouble for them.’” Tris’s mother dies to help Tris escape. Triss has to shoot Will to escape. She goes to a bunker where her father, brother, Marcus and some Abnegation people are. They have to stop the erudite . Tris knows how, they have to go to the pitt and the control chamber where Tobias is. They go the way she took the first time she went to Dauntless headquarters. When they are there she discovers that Peter is awake and shoots him in his hand. He says he would help her If he could stay with Marcus and her brother. Tris and her father go.  Her father dies right before they’re in the control chamber. Tobias is still in the power of Janine and tries to kill her. She can’t hurt him and gives him the gun to shoot her. He wakes up and they remove the software. Peter, Tris, Marcus, Tobias to go to Amity for help.
