Pop music in the 50’s
Rock ’n roll came to existence in the 50’s, it’s a mix from R&B and country music. The main instrument in rock music is the guitar. Elvis Presley was a very popular rock ‘n roll artist. With this new style of music there was also a new sort of dancing, the twist, which Elvis was very good at. It is a quick type of dancing with a lot of hip movements. That’s why Elvis was also known as “Elvis the Pelvis” (pelvis means hip). A purpose of rock music was to rebel against parents, the church and the state. That’s why not many older people liked this type of rock music but for example the “Elderly Brothers” made a type of rock music more suitable for older people. At the end of the 50’s a lot of rock musicians disappeared and there was not much left of pop music.

Pop music in the 60’s
Pop music start to come back around 1963 when the Beatles and the Rolling Stones became popular. Their music was influenced by different types of pop music and the music developed. Lyrics became more personal, genres changes and instruments changed. At the end of the 60’s the Beatles split up, but the Rolling Stones are still together. Funk was music from the end of the 60’s. It’s a combination of jazz, R&B, blues and soul. The main instrument used with Funk is the bas guitar. Funk musicians used a lot of show elements, exclusive glittery outfits were worn and a lot of special effects were used.

Pop music in the 70’s
In the 70’s the Disco music came to existence, there was a real “disco rage”.
People had more money to spend and more often went to clubs where they played disco music. The movie “Saturday night fever” gives a good image of that time. It were usually women singing disco music. A popular group of that time was Abba. There was a new sort of record made for clubs, this one could play for 12minutes. Disco music is almost only records, most of the time the artists weren’t that good at making music and just acted for television.
Punk is an aggressive type of Rock music and came to existence in 1976. It was a form of protest against the pop music from that time. Green day is an example of modern Punk music.

Pop music in the 80’s
The 80’s was the time of Prince, Madonna and Michael Jackson. The 80’s was also the time of more “technical” music. A lot was done by computer, guitars etc. were replaced by synthesizers. Because of that the styles of that time became more a like and you had less different styles than in the 70’s. Also new in the 80’s was the video, which made pop music even more popular. MTV was the first channel who non stop showed video’s.
Disco still was very popular together with New wave, a new style of music which was influenced by Punk. New wave was mainly made by young groups and was very different from the disco-style. It’s a very simple and not very commercial type of music. A famous new wave artist is Blondie.

Pop music in the 90’s
New styles of pop music came to existence in the 90’s namely House, Hardcore, Hip Hop and Metal. In 1995 TMF was the first Dutch channel to broadcast only music. It was good for the Dutch musicians because for them it was easier to come on Dutch TV than on the American MTV. The music nowadays isn’t very different than the music in the 90’s although House and Hardcore have become less popular and HipHop more popular.
