Meer informatie

A passage to India is set in Chandrapore and in the time when India had been occupied by the English, which was from 1858 till 1947. The Englishwomen Adela Quested and Mrs. Moore travel to India for three reasons: Mrs. Moore wants to visit her son, she wants to introduce Adela to her son Ronny because the plan is that Ronny and Adela will marry and Adela wants to see the real India. They talk to the Indians in Aziz’s home, a doctor who has met Mrs. Moore by coincidence, after he has invited them. After this visit Aziz asks if Adela and Mrs Moore want to go to the Marabar Caves. They want to, but Ronny forbids the ladies to go. Later in the story, Adela looks at the Marabar Caves and says to herself she still wants to visit them with Aziz, even though her fiancée Ronny has forbidden it. He gives them permission if Fielding goes with them, but Fielding misses the train to the Caves, so only Aziz and some servants guide them. In the cave, Mrs. Moore doesn’t feel well because it is so crowded, narrow and noisy, so she refuses to go in the next cave. Adela, Aziz and a tour guide continue and Adela’s feelings for Ronny keep on changing: should she marry him or not? She leaves the Caves after having decided not to marry him. Back in Chandrapore Aziz gets arrested because according to Adela he touched her. During the following trial Adela confesses that Aziz is innocent and the whole English community turns against her, because she lied, except Fielding. Mrs. Moore leaves India and dies on the trip back to England. In the end, Fielding and Adela both turn back to England too and Fielding lets Aziz, who has become his friend, know that he didn’t marry Adela, but that he married Stella, Mrs. Moore’s daughter.
