1) Summarize the story you have read in about 100 words.

Bella Swan moves from Phoenix to Forks (the city were her father “police chief Swan” is called) because her mom has a new man, Phil, with who she’s going to travel. At her new school she get quickly new friends, also some boys. When she sits next to Edward Cullen one biology lesson, he reacts crazy. He seems to be angry, but she can’t understand why. The next day he isn’t at school, and the next day he’s away, and the next day… The first day he comes back, he’s very kind to her, and she don’t understand what’s happening… But a few days later, when it’s very cold and slippery, the van of a classmate slips and ride into Bella. Edward is on the other side of the parking lot, but he stops the van with his hands. She can’t understand how he did that… After a family friend, Jacob Black, tells her about some local myths, she does some research and she founds information about vampires. She concludes that Edward is a vampire. Edward confesses that he initially avoided Bella because the scent of her blood was too desirable to him. Over time, Edward and Bella fall in love. Edward tells Bella that his family doesn’t drink blood, they try to be “good vampires” and drink animal blood. When the Cullens go to play a baseball game in the wood, Bella comes with them. After a while, three other vampires disturb the game. James, the leader, is a “tracker” (a vampire who likes to hunt at humans for sport). He wants to hunt Bella, only because he thinks it’s a good challenge: Bella’s protected by seven vampires. The Cullens try to distract the tracker by splitting up Bella and Edward, and Bella is sent to hide in a hotel in Phoenix. There, Bella get’s a phone call from James, who said he’s holding her mother captive. When Bella surrenders herself, James attacks her. Before she is killed, Edward, along with the other Cullens, rescues her and defeats James. Once they realize that James has bitten Bella's hand, Edward successfully sucks the poison from her bloodstream and prevents her from becoming a vampire, after which she is brought to a hospital. Everything’s okay, and when they’re at the High School Prom, Bella tells Edward how much she wants to be a vampire. But Edward says: “Is that what you dream about? About being a monster?” And he said it will never happen.

2) Who is the main  character? What kind of person is (s)he? Describe this person in as much detail as you can.

Edward Cullen and Bella Swam are the main characters. Edward Cullen is a vampire who was born on June 20, 1901 as Edward Masen. Dying from the Spanish influenza and orphaned, Edward was changed into a vampire in 1918 by his doctor, Dr. Carlisle Cullen. Carlisle treated Edward like his son, and after Edward he also changed Esme (his new wife), Rosalie (the “most beautiful person on earth”) and Emmett (the husband of Rosalie, he’s got a lot of very big muscles). Jasper and Alice (also a couple) came later to the family. All the “vegetarian” vampires live in a big, white house in the wood. After many years of this life, Edward comes upon a new girl at his school in Forks, Washington– her name is Bella Swan. At first, he is overwhelmed by her blood and considers killing her in the classroom. In order to keep himself from destroying the peace that Carlisle has created and maintained, Edward runs off to Alaska to some old friends. He refuses to let Bella disrupt his life, so he returns to Forks. The next day, he begins to converse with Bella in their biology class. He later also saves her from being hit by a van. She witnesses this and becomes suspicious of his supernatural abilities. The two become friends. Edward is the mind-reading vampire, he knows everything a human thinks. Except Bella, he can’t hear what she’s thinking. Edward thinks that if you become a vampire, you don’t have a soul. That’s the reason he doesn’t want Bella to become a vampire. All “vegetarian” vampires have golden eyes and are amazingly beautiful, so Edward is. He has bronze colored hair.

Bella Swan is a girl, she’s describes as “the girl next door”. Six months after her birth, her parents, Renée and Charlie Swan, got divorced. She got to live with her mother in Phoenix (but in the story she’s very pale...). When, in the begin of the book, Renée’s going to travel with Phil, her new husband, Bella’s going to live with her father. She never had a lot of (boy)friends. She fell in love with Edward, she wants to give up everything for him and become a vampire, but Edward doesn’t want that. She’s very pale with brown hairs and brown eyes, but in the book isn’t a very detailed deion. She’s very loyal to people she loves, she’ll never be mean or hurt people by purpose. She’s unbelievable clumsy and stubborn, she used to fall over her own feet. She faints when she smells blood. No one can read her mind or do something in her head, it’s protected. In the book they said “Well, I’ve got a theory about that: They can hurt you, but in your head you’re safe; it’s on another frequency.” She’s a terrible liar,

3) What is the setting (i.e. where and when does the story take place)? Be as specific as possible. Is the setting important in the story? Could the story have taken place in another place, at another time?

Twilight happens in Forks, Washington, America. Forks is the most rainy city in America and the sun is nearly ever shining. That makes it the perfect place for vampires, because vampires sparkle in the sunlight and that’s very striking. The Cullens moved to Forks so they could be outside the whole day, and otherwise Bella wouldn’t met them. The story takes now place, it’s in the present, but it’s this time, the 21st century. The time of the year is ±middle of the semester. The time doesn’t matter that much, it’s a story like classic stories, a forbidden love. Conclusion: Another time is possible, another place isn’t.

4) What is your opinion of the book? Why do you think it good / funny/ exciting/ thought-provoking? Would you recommend it to your class-mates?

Twilight is my favorite book, well, the Twilight Saga books are my favorite books… I’ve read Twilight four times and I’ve watched the movie thirteen times, so yeah, I’m a real Twilight-fan. I love the way it’s written, and the characters, and the love between Edward and Bella (the apple on the front represents the forbidden fruit from the book of Genesis. It’s standing for the love between Edward and Bella, in the beginning of the book’s a quote: “But the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”) Twilight is good because it’s addictive, you have to read more! It’s funny because some parts are just really funny, sometimes you really have to laugh. It’s exciting because, when I read it the first time, I was really nail-biting. The part were Bella is-nearly-killed is very, very exciting. It’s thought-provoking because you’re going to think about the idea of vampires, could they be real or not? In the book it’s described like it could be real, that the vampires are a secret society. I think it can be real and maybe there’s something like vampires or witches or whatever else without even someone noticing it… A lot of people like Twilight, the film or the books, there are a lot of Twilight-days, special for Twi-hards (today was the first official Dutch Twilight-day, I was there, together with two friends I know from hockey, and it was really fun! I’ve bought some cool Twilight stuffJ) I think the book is great, and all my classmates know it, (I used to talk about it for a long amount of time during some lessons) I am team Edward, Marit is team Jacob... The best book in the worldJ!!
