Description of the characters:

Marina:
Marina is a housewife who is sick of the boring village life. She finds it very boring  sitting alone at home while Tom is at work. The nice sides from Marina are that she'd forgive Tom right now if he tells what’s happened. That he has hired a detective because he did not trust her.
The bad sides of Marina are: that she says that she goes to her girlfriend Joanne in London but that’s not the truth. And she stays home.

Tom:
Tom is Marina’s husband. He works in London and neglects Marina a bit.

Tracy:
Tracy was the woman of whom Marina got the message on the job of the ironing man and that door Phill, the detective, for Marina was seeing.

Phill:
Phill is the man that was hired by Tom to discover what Marina did because he was not at home.

What is the central problem in the story.

The central problem is that Marina and Tom had moved to London. She has no friends in London and is very lonely because Tom is working the whole day. And she hates ironing. She wishes that she had someone to do the ironing for her. And her wish comes true.

Which charachters do you like, which do you dislike

Ik zou de strijkende man wel willen leren kennen, omdat hij in het boek heel mysterieus wordt beschreven. In het boek kom je er niet achter hoe hij heet, en hoe hij weet dat Marina eenzaam is. En dat zou ik wel graag willen weten.
Ik zou Tom niet willen leren kennen, het lijkt me een beetje saai persoon. Ook omdat hij de dingen opschrijft die hij die dag leuk en minder leuk vond. Ik vind hem ook een beetje vreemd denken, zijn gedachtes komen in het boek naar voren, en dat spreekt me niet echt aan.

The books takes pace in a house in a little village Felton, near Cambridge (p.10`they now…. Nowhere land’). She had no friends in the village and there is no work. Everyone was older than they were.(p.12 ‘They had, they were.’’)

The story plays in this time because:

EFL= English as a foreign language.
No, because it is not funny. It`s not nice. I found it very boring, because there was no tension. Nothing happened. (what I like.) And that’s boring.

Marina, what did you think aboutthe fact that you moved to Felton?
I didn’t like it, I thought it was horrible. Because all my friends lived in London and then we had to move to Felton, a little village. That was a very hard change.

Why have you moved to Felton?
Because Tom had a new job. He could earn much more money with his new job. And his old job was boring, so we did this for Tom.

You were lonely in Felton, but why didn’t you look for nice people?
Because all these people in Felton were much older than we are. And I had the feeling that they didn’t like us, because we are new here.

Why do you hate ironing?
Oh, I don’t know actually, but it’s so boring.

What did you think when the ironing man stood at your door?
Yes, that was really strange. When the bell rang, I though it was the mail or something. But I was a bit scared because we never get visitors. When I opened the door, I saw a very lovely man. I didn’t know what to say, but then he said that he should do my ironing. I didn’t understand him, so I asked him if he would like a cup of coffee. He was really nice actually, so it felt close.

Did you know that Tom was jealous when you went to London with the ironing man?
No I didn`t, because I thought that he believed me when I said that I intended to go with Joanne. I don’t know how he knew that I was going with the ironing man.

Het strand was leeg aangezien de zon al bijna onder was en de meeste andere bezoekers al waren teruggekeerd naar hun hotel. Tom en Marina vonden dat zij het strand voor zich alleen hadden. Plotseling hield Tom op met lopen en keek langs het strand. Hij zag een kleine groep mensen. Het waren er drie: twee mannen en een vrouw. Een van de mannen was vrij groot en voor een ogenblik dacht Tom dat hij hem kende. Hij wist het niet zeker. Maar hij leek veel op Phil, de detective. De tweede man was knap en lang. Tom draaide naar Marina en zag dat zij ook naar de zelfde groep mensen keek.
`zie jij ze ook? ` vroeg Tom aan Marina. `ja, zei Marina, die man lijkt precies op die strijkende man en Tracy, maar hoe ken jij die ? `
` Hun herken ik niet, maar die andere man. Dat is Phil, de detective. Hij was die man die je volgde. `
`maar hoe hebben jullie elkaar leren kennen?` vroeg Marina. `Kom, ik wil hem ontmoeten` Tom en Marina lopen richting de strijkende man, Tracy en Phil. Zij zagen dat Tom en Marina al aan kwamen. Marina: “ hallo, wat doen jullie hier? Kent u elkaar? `oké zei de strijkende man, ik kan je alles vertellen. Ik heb een vriend in Felton en ik hoorde van hem dat u zo eenzaam was, en om die reden ging ik naar uw huis en dronken wij een kop koffie. Ik verzond je ook een bericht waarin stond dat je naar Londen moest komen voor Tracy. Wij deden dit om Tom jaloers te maken. Wij wisten dat Tom de krant ging lezen, waar Phil een reclame in had. het was de bedoeling dat Phil niet Marina, maar een andere moest volgen. Wanneer Tom dit zou zien, zou hij jaloers zijn en zou droevig zijn om Marina` ` Dus je zorgde ervoor dat wij weer bij elkaar kwamen ? `vroeg Tom. `ja, zei Tracy, maar nu moeten wij gaan, we willen ons vliegtuig niet missen.` tot ziens, misschien dat ik u spoedig zie! ”
en ze liepen weg. `als ze dit niet hadden gezegd was ik er nooit achtergekomen` zei Marina tegen Tom. `Gelukkig dat ze het wel gezegd hebben. Lachte Tom en liep naar Marina toe en kuste haar.
