Smaug certainly looked fast asleep, when Bilbo peeped once more from the entrance. He was just about to step out on to the floor when he caught a sudden thin ray of red from under the drooping lid of Smaug's left eye. He was only pretending to be asleep! He was watching the tunnel entrance...

Whisked away from his comfortable, unambitious life in his hobbit-hole in Bag End by Gandalf the wizard and a company of dwarves, Bilbo Baggins finds himself caught up in a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon.

Title explanation: The book is named after the principal person in the story, mister Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit. A hobbit is a creature that looks like a little human, only smaller, thinner and harrier. Summary: The book is about the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, who lived in his comfortable hobbit-hole. On a morning his friend Gandalf, a mighty wizard, visited him. The day after Gandalf visited him again, bringing 13 dwarfs with him named Thorin Oakenshield, Fili, Kili, Balin, Dwalin, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur and Bombur. Gandalf persuaded the hobbit to go with them on a journey to the Lonely Mountain, where the big, dangerous dragon Smaug the Magnificent guarded over the treasure that belongs to Thorin Oakenshield, the most important dwarf. The dwarfs thought the hobbit was no use to them and they didn’t understand why Gandalf wanted him to go with them. But on their trip they found out why. First Gandalf saved them from enemies like goblins, trolls and wolves, but when Gandalf had to go away because he had to do other things at other places Mr. Baggins saved the dwarfs more then once from dangerous enemies like goblins, elves and spiders. He was able to save them because he had the qualities as a hobbit to move very quietly and to be a great burglar. He had also found a magical ring in one of the goblin-corridors that could make him invisible. The dwarfs began to respect him more and more during the journey. After a very difficult but sometimes also beautiful journey trough mountains where the goblins lived, through dark, endless woods where elves, spiders and unidentifiable creatures crept around, through open, and because of that very cold fields, along friends of Gandalf and people (the men of the lake), they finally reached their goal: the Mountain of Smaug the Magnificent. That, of course, was the most difficult part of their trip. Beating a dragon as big and dangerous as Smaug was really something different than killing some goblins or escaping from elves. They only had an old map of the mountain and a key, and somewhere shut have bin a secret entrance through which they could go inside without the dragon noticing them. The dwarves thought Mr. Baggins had to be the one who has to go inside and find out everything what was possible to find out. He went inside the entrance (very afraid), what happened to be the entrance of a corridor, and found out that the corridor opened out on a great hall where on the top of a big pile of gold, jewellery and other beautiful things the dragon Smaug laid, asleep. Mr. Baggins went back to tell the dwarfs everything he saw, bringing a golden cup with him. And when he went to the dragon again, the dragon was awake (and angry about the missing cup) and they had a weird conversation. In this conversation the hobbit made a mistake in speaking: he told the dragon the men of the lake helped them. The dragon flew by night to the men of the lake and destroyed their town and a lot of people were killed. A very brave man, Bard, succeeded in killing Smaug. Meanwhile, the dwarfs and mr. Baggins had gone into the hall were the treasure lay but they didn’t dare to go outside the mountain because of their fear for Smaug. The news of the dead dragon spread very quickly, and soon elves, goblins, dwarves and also Baggins and the dwarves knew it. At this moment the dwarfs and Mr. Baggins thought the adventure has ended, but unexpected thousands of goblins came to the mountain. Dwarfs, men and elves had to fight together against the goblins. Eventually they won this horrible fight, but with a lot of dead ones, including Thorin Oakenshield, Fili and Kili. In the meantime Gandalf had came back and with him and his share of the treasure Bilbo Baggins returned to his warm and save hobbit hole.
