The Great Gatsby

1.
Francis Scott Fitzgerald – The Great Gatsby

2a. 1925

2b. I read the 1991 version by Everyman’s Library

3a. There’s a man in the book called Gatsby. He has a lot of money and a big house. Nobody knows exactly how he became so rich but Nick(the main character)admires him. That’s why he calls him the great Gatsby.

3b. Nick lives next to this great Gatsby and eventually becomes friends with him.

4 It’s a sort of a love story

5a The story takes place in West Egg, New York

5b In the summer of the 1920’s, I know that because the story takes place after the First World War. There are constantly parties going on as well, and it’s very hot, that explains why it’s summer.

6a Nick Carraway and James Gatz

6b Nick Carraway :
He’s is a young person who moved to West Egg to learn about business. He’s very friendly and always tries to help people.
James Gatz : He called himself Jay Gatsby and had to fight in The First World War, which affected his life; he couldn’t marry his girl and now she’s married to Tom. He always invites a lot of people to his parties and is very hospitable. He’s a bit of a poor boy who tries to disguise his past.

7a The theme of the book is impossible love. Jay Gatsby and Daisy are in love but they can’t marry because Daisy also loves Tom (even if it’s only a bit) and she doesn’t know which of the two guys choose. She doesn’t want to leave Tom because she’s not willing to give up her safe life.

7b I think he wanted us to see in what kind of society the people from the 20’s lived. It was a period where everything went well, and there were a lot of parties. You notice that in the book because Gatsby gives a party almost every day. He always wants us to see that sometimes two people are in love, and it is impossible for them to love each other in public because they’re already married or can't be together for other reasons.

8 I’ve chosen this part of the book because it’s very important for the rest of the story. Gatsby has asked Nick if he wanted to invite Daisy to come over because he didn’t want to invite her himself. When Nick invites her, Gatsby is nervous all day but when she arrives and Nick leaves them alone he starts feeling better. It turns out that they are old lovers and they almost got married if Gatsby hadn’t been in the army. They start seeing each other more often without that Tom(Daisy's husband) knows of course. But they start to realise that this isn’t going to work if Daisy doesn’t divorce. She doesn’t want to divorce because she doesn’t want to give up her safe life. On one day Daisy, Tom, Nick, Gatsby and Jordan are doing something together. It turns in a fight because Tom finds out that Gatsby and Daisy are flirting with each other and maybe dating. When he starts talking about it Gatsby gets mad and wants Daisy to admit that she never loved Tom anyway. Daisy can’t say that because if she says that she would be lying and she doesn’t want to do that. When they drive away again, Daisy and Gatsby in one car, the others in the other car, Daisy runs into a girl, she dies. It turns out that the girl is Tom's girlfriend. When the father of the girl wants to find out who killed his daughter (Gatsby and Daisy drove away quickly) he comes to Tom. He of course says that Gatsby has killed her, which leads the father to Gatsby’s house. When he gets there, the people hear gun shots, Gatsby is dead.
With this part of the book I want to give an example of how extraordinary important this development is for the rest of the story. If Gatsby hadn’t ask Nick to invite Daisy so that they could talk once again, this whole problem would not have happened and he would probably have not been killed. Or if he just accepted the fact that he couldn’t marry her because she didn’t want to divorce, it would not have happened either. One of the reasons Daisy ran into that girl was that she was sad and a bit angry. If he just accepted the fact that they were friends and nothing more, he wouldn’t have to fight with Tom and so on.
With this example I also want to show that the ‘Great Gatsby’ invites many interesting people over every evening. He always has great parties and he’s very hospitable. But when he has to invite his old girlfriend he doesn’t have the guts and has to ask his neighbour to invite her so that he can talk with her. When I read that I was confused, why didn’t he dare to invite her for tea? I think it’s because he wasn’t so ‘great’ after all. He made a good impression to everyone by giving all these parties but in fact nobody really knows who he is and what he had done in the past. In my opinion he’s just a shy poor boy who changed his name and wants to forget about his past by giving all this parties.

9 I have chosen this book because I was in the library and I didn’t know which book to choose. Then a friend of mine said to me that he has read this book and it wasn’t hard to read. I trusted him and I chose this book.

10 I found it a rather hard book to read, it was not as easy as my friend said, however I did find it a good book. You learn something about love problems, that you can have an affair but still be happily married. You also learn about the life the people lived in the twenties. It’s interesting to see the differences from the society then and the society we live in now.
