Explanation of title: Short before the moment when Jenny kills herself, she hears an owl cry. She linked the owl immidiately to death. She thinks that the owl is a symbol of it.
I don't think it's a good title, because it was only mentioned once in the whole book. On the other hand, the story is about death and fear, so it does fits in a way.
Synopsis: The main character is Robert Forrester. He is just divorced and he moved from New York to Langley. He works at Langley Aeronautics. Robert has been spying a girl for a while: Jenny Theirof. On a night Jenny finds out. She strangely invites Robert in and they become friends. The problem is that Jenny falls in love with Robert, although she is ingaged to Greg Wyncoop. Robert doesn't fall in love with her. Greg finds out and freaks. He starts a fight with Robert on the side of a river. When Greg falls in the water, Robert pulls him out and went away. After the incident Greg disappears. The police suspect that Robert killed him by throwing Greg in the rover. Greg is actually in New York with the crazy ex-wife of Robert, Nicky Jurgen. Jenny can't handle the stress anymore and kills herself. After that somebody tries to shoot Robert serveral times, but Robert only get wounded. He knows that it's Greg Wyncoop who's doing the shooting. After a while the police finds Greg and arrest him, but before he's put on trial he went to Robert with Nicky. He kills Nicky there.
Themes: love, hate, jealousy, death, murder
Charcters: Robert Forrester is a young man who has a nasty past. He had depressions when he was young and he had a terrible marriage. He isn't happy and because of that he loved to see Jenny busy in the kitchen, only because she did looked so happy. At the beginning of the book he's lonely too. He doesn't have friends in Langey and his friends in New York are also the friends of his ex-wife and therefor he doesn't see them anymore.
Jenny or Jennifer Thierof is a young woman (she a couple of years younger then Robert) who's engaged to Greg in the beginning of the book. She a happy girl, but she also talks a lot about death, probably because she saw her little brother die when he was young. When she meets Robert, she finds out that she doesn't love Greg and doesn't want to marry him. She is a little weird, because she lets a prowler in her house. Most other people would call the police. She kills herself in the end of the book.
Greg Wyncoop is totally in love with Jenny and he would do anything to keep her by his side and marry her. When he finds out about Robert he is so mad at him that he attacks him and tries to kill him. He is extremely jealous.
Nicky Jurgen is the ex-wife of Robert Forrester. She makes paintings. She calls Robert a lot, just to ennoy him. She is really a weird character. I think she hates Robert and helps Greg because of that.
Opinion: At the beginning the book really got my attention. I was curious why Robert spied on Jenny and why his ex-wife hated him so much. When I find that out the book became boring. There weren't any developments in the story for a while. Then comes the part were Robert fights with Greg. That part is interesting for a while but also here becomes the story boring again. Again the story didn't have new developments. The pace of the story is just really slow and it isn't told in a thrilling way. I didn't like the end because it isn't the end. I don't like it if a story isn't finished but the book is. You don't know what will happen with Robert and Greg. Most of the characters aren't really realistic.
