* Chapter 6 is the chapter in the middle, it’s based on the discovery of the dead man with his parachute, also called ‘the beast from air’. It’s a pretty important chapter for the story. That’s because it’s sort of a signal for the cruel things that will happen on the island. It also was the cause of Jack’s new fortress on Castle Rock. During the search for the ‘beast’ Jack discovered a perfect place to start his own camp with him being the leader. From the moment that Jack is the leader of his group everything goes wrong. Like killing each other without a reason. So the dead man with the parachute is very important in the book. In this chapter you get for the first time confronted with death. That will play a big role in the book because there will die some children. Starting at this chapter the tension raises and there is an acceleration in the book. The action starts here, because now the events follow each other faster and faster. To make it short, this chapter is very important because without it there wouldn’t be dead children, the story would be boring and slow without any action.
* The most important characters in the book are Jack, Ralph, Simon, Eric, Piggy and Roger.
Jack is also a leader, but exact the opposite of Ralph. Jack represents the evil that shelters in the children. He forgets the most important thing on the island: the fire. Because of him the passing boat couldn’t see them. He is obsessed by the hunting, in a while he gets more cruel by the day. Jack even killed Piggy and he (accidental) kills Simon.
Simon wasn’t very important in the book, but he was killed by Jack and the other boys. He helped the little boys and did nothing wrong on the island. Simon didn’t have many friends, he always went alone to his shelter in the jungle.
At the beginning of the book, Piggy is a very important character, because Jack and Ralph managed to light a fire by his glasses. He had asthma so he couldn’t do very much, that’s why he always staid with the little boys. At last he got killed by Roger who pushed him from the cliff.
Roger is Jack’s best friend, that’s because he is very nasty. Just like Jack. He is evil during the whole story. Roger’s hobby was teasing the little boys.
Sam and Eric are two boys, but they act as one unit due to the fact that they’re twins. They were for a very long time on Ralph’s side, but when it got too dangerous they joined Jack. When Jack ties the twin up they tell him Ralph’s shelter. They betray Ralph. The two boys haven’t witnessed any other important events.
* My appreciation:
I think it’s a good book, the story is told in a good way. This book is not a real page turner, however I couldn’t wait to know how it would end. I’m glad that the book isn’t very thick. There were only a couple of disappointments about the book. For example: the old spelling and the cover. Further I also think there wasn’t enough violence in the book, there should have been a big fight or something like that. So my expectations are partly granted. The theme of the book is well-chosen, because the war is always an interesting subject. I haven’t read many books like this one before so I couldn’t do else then to give it a try. In some subtle way William Golding has described us the cruel things in that happen in times of war, the effects of war on citizens, the greed of people and especially: what war is about, power.
