9. Now tell the contents (inhoud) of the story in your own words. Only the most important things, of course!:
The Englishman Phileas Fogg did not have a wife or children, but he had one servant in his house: Jean Passepartout. He had friends too and he met them in the club. One friend, Ralph, was important in the Bank of England. He told about a man who took much money.
Because of that conversation they came to an other subject: If you can go round the world in eighty days. His friends didn't believe it's possible, but Fogg would try it. So they bet much money. The same day he left, together with Passepartout. The whole journey they travelled by train and ship.
Suddenly the railway to Calcutta stopped, but it began again in Allahabad. Fogg, Jean and Francis Cromarty, a kind man who they met in the train, wanted to ride to Allahabad on horses.
They didn't find a horse, but they did find an elephant. Fogg paid much money to ride on that elephant. So with three men and a guide they left to Allahabad. When they came near a forest, the guide and elephant went back, because there were people there and it was not allowed that people saw the elephant. When they saw that a woman must die with her husband, Fogg wanted to save her. So Fogg and his fellow- travellers saved Aouda, the woman, which was very difficult. But she can't stay in her country, so she must come along with Fogg to Hongkong, because there lived family of her. After the train came in Calcutta, Cromarty said goodbye.
During the whole journey a detective, Fix, travelled with them, but they didn't know that. He thought Fogg was the bankrobber, because the description of the bankrobber looked like Fogg. Fix wanted to be friends with Jean, so that he could get more information of Fogg.
When they came in Hongkong, the family of Aouda was moved to Europe, so she would travel with Fogg and Jean to Europe.
In the journey many things happened, but Phileas Fogg paid much money for everything, because he wanted to win the bet and he would get much money then.
Because Jean came in a temple with his shoes on, Jean and Fogg both had to be in prison, but Fogg bought them free.
Also Fogg and Aouda lost Jean, because Fix gave Jean some drink, but Jean drank too much and he got unconscious. Fogg didn't know where he was. So Aouda and Fogg had to go without Jean. Jean must find Fogg back. Fortunately they found each other.
When they finally, after eighty days, came in England, Fix had Fogg notified with the police and Fogg had to go in the cell. Finally the bankrobber was found, so Fogg was free again. More was the pity, he had the bet lost, because he was a day late, he thought... But because in the countries the clocktimes were different, he was still on time and he won the bet. Fix apologised, Fogg was a well-known man now, he married Aouda and he wasn't anymore a reserved man.
