This book is about a woman who fell in love with a guy and marries him too soon…
- Alice Loudon is a young and diligent woman, she’s got a boyfriend and they also live together
- Adam Tallis is a mountaineer and has done a wonderful thing, he saved people in a storm on a mountain “the Chungawat” and he will get very famous of what he has done
- Jake, is Alice’s boyfriend, he is an engineer. Alice breaks up with him in the begin of this book, because she fells in love with Adam
An explanation before the story began:
The Chungawat is a mountain in the Himalayas, Adam went there on an expedition with Greg, Françoise and a few other people. The reason that they went there was: Greg wanted to earn a lot of money, so he asked very rich people if they wanted to climb a mountain, a few wanted to go and paid him a lot of money. He thought he had a ‘waterproof’ system, but he didn’t. Adam had the yellow safety rope, that’s very important to know! A rich man, named Tomas Benn, who couldn’t speak or understand one word English, he died on that mountain also, before he died they thought he was screaming for help, but he screamed gelb, and that’s the German word for YELLOW!!!
The story:
Alice is a young and successful woman, who lives in the heart of London. She lives together with Jake, an engineer. On one day when she was crossing the street, she saw this beautiful man, Adam, he looks her straight in her eyes and didn’t let her go. He takes her to his house and makes love to her.
She can’t get him out of her head and goes back everyday, she leaves Jake and is going to move in with Adam.
By leaving Jake, she also lets all of her friends go, because they have the same friends. After 1,5 month Adam takes her to a special place and proposed her. She says yes and Adam took a picture of her face when she answered.
After they celebrated it, they go to their parents and tell them that they are going to marry. Alice has told the same thing to Jake and the rest of al their friends. They are all amazed, because they don’t know Alice that way…
They were going to marry in a church with totally strangers as their witnesses. But after a while, Alice found out a few things about Adam’s ex-girlfriends, they are all dead now.
She thinks it is very strange and she has to find out what’s going on…
She asked a few friends of Adam to help her, she asks one of Adam’s best friends, Greg, he tells her everything about Françoise. She also went to Adam’s father and found letters there from 5 ex-girlfriends, Penny, Adèle, Lisa, Françoise and Lily.
She never heard of Adèle, but she read a few of her letters and found out that she was already married and she wanted to break up with Adam. A week later she was missing. Alice started to think that Adam killed her and the other girls too, but was that jus a silly dream???
She couldn’t get it out of her head and so she started to investigate the matter. She found out that Adèle’s sister was found in river, dead. She went to Adèle’s parents to find out if they knew more. After she went there she knew that Adam did it, but she needed proof.
She found out that Françoise dumped Adam right before they left and Greg told her that he had an affaire with her during that trip. And if we think back to that German man, Tomas Benn, they thought he screamed for help, but he said gelb and Alice knows that he meant the yellow safety rope and that Adam killed Françoise. But still she needed more proof.
She asked around and came to the conclusion that he had done it, she went to the police and told them everything. They didn’t want to believe her, because she still had no evidence. Adam knew that she told everything and wanted to help her. But she was scared and left him. Now she was afraid that he would kill her too, because she dumped him.
She realized that the place where Adam proposed to her must be the place where Adam buried Adèle. She told the police everything and they were going to look for the body.
They found it after a while and now they were driving to Adam’s apartment. When they came in, they saw that he had killed himself. He wrote a letter for Alice, it said: My Alice, seeing you was admire you. You were my last and true love. I am sorry that it has to end this way. Always would be to short, Adam.
She had to cry, but she knew it was over now.
My opinion:
If you don’t read much (at my age) then you mustn’t read this book, especially not in English. I first read it in Dutch, that was more then a year ago, so it was easier to read it again in English. The story was a little bit mixed, but if you read it well, you can understand it.
The words were very hard, but I have used my dictionary often.
I can really recommend this book to almost anyone. But you read a lot about sex and violence.
You can also watch the movie, Killing me softly, that’s based on this book.
But he has got a different ending, I found that a little bit weird. But I also can recommend that!!
