Summary
The book is a diary of Alice. She is a shy and insecure girl. First of all, her big love Roger rejects her. She is devastated about it. She thinks that it's the fault of her appearance and she starts slimming. That seems to work because she got asked out on a date by Scott. But a few days later her father told her that he got a new job. They are going to move. On her new school she has no one and she is most of the time alone. Then she met Beth who she really likes, they are best friends. But during the summer Alice goes to her grandmother and grandfather and Beth goes to a summer camp. It is very boring with her grandparents and Alice has nothing to do. Then she met Jill, she’s going hanging out with her. At Jills home are a few friends of Jill and there she meets Bill, she used drugs for the first time. They gave it to her without her permission. But she loved it. She dates frequently with Bill and comes into contact with several kinds of drugs. Then her grandfather got a heart attack. She is going to stay even longer with her grandparent to help them. So she continues using drugs and one time she lost her virginity when she and Bill used drugs. Then she met Roger again and now he liked her to. But she's very stressful because of the fear of a pregnancy. She can hardly sleep
at home and uses a lot of sleeping pills.
When Beth came home, she was not the same and she had a boyfriend. Alice can´t have contact with Roger anymore because he went to military school. Again, she has nobody but then she meets Chris, in a shop nearby. With her she can get along very well and she´s her new best friend. They meet Ted and Richie. Chris goes with Ted and Alice with Richie. Because of them the two get back into contact with drugs. But they are using more and more drugs and they are in financial trouble. Because Ted and Richie are already at the university and because they have many to study, does Alice and Chris have to earn the money. They do this by selling drugs. One day, Alice and Chris walked into the apartment of their boyfriends and they see Ted and Richie having sex. They are angry and went to San Francisco. Also because they have Ted en Richie reported to the police. They want to end up in San Francisco to start their own business but first they have to get more experience. They rent a very dirty room. And Alice found a job after a few days. She works in a small dirty lingerie shop. Chris went in search for a better job. She found a better job en she worked for the rich Shelia in a design shop. Now Chris has found a better job, Alice can go looking for a better job. She's going to start in a jewellery store. Shelia gives a lot of parties and Alice and Chris are also invited. At these parties are many drugs. One day Chris and Alice and two other girls got invited to Shelias home. Shelia gave them hard drugs and Shelia and her Boyfriend raped the girls. After this incident, Chris and Alice swear that they will never use drugs again. Now they started looking for a place for their own shop. they found it in Berkeley. They work hard and their new shop is going well. But when it’s almost Christmas Alice gets homesick and wants to go home. She called her parents and they picked her up. She is going home. But back to school, everybody thinks she is still selling drugs. Including Lane and he stalks her and wants her to give him drugs. One day Chris called Alice, she was very upset and Alice went to her. She was sitting down smoking cannabis and Alice joins her. They are both back on drugs now. Now Lane helps her to get drugs. One day their parents found out they were using drugs and they are really worried. They look at her all the time. But at school someone gave her drugs and she was very stoned when she got home. She left home. First she lifted with a group of younger people and they give her drugs. But they lost their touch and she just walked around. She met a girl Doris and she moved in with her. Together they are using a lots of drugs. Because they didn´t have any drugs left, they went to California. There it goes wrong. She is always stoned and she doesn´t know where she is or what day it is. She does everything for drugs. She cannot live without drugs. She even does blow-jobs for drugs. On one day when she is something brighter she goes to a priest and calls her parents. Who picked her up and brought her back home. She swears drugs again. But at school she get bullied a lot. Especially when she told her old drug-using friends she doesn’t want to use drugs again. They threatened her and they were gossiping about her. She's very alone. Then her grandfather gets a heart attack and he dies. Her
grandmother is living in Alices house now.
She often goes to the library of the university and meets joel. They speak everyday down there and she is very in love with him. The bullying became worse. Then her grandmother died. Summer vacation starts and Joel is leaving. But everything is going better and she even has a job as a baby sitter. Then one day she wakes up in the hospital where her hands and head are completely broken and beaten and she is all covered in bruises. The people who are bullying her gave her without her knowledge wrong drugs and she freaked out. They also said that Alice sold drugs at school. So Alice had to go to the State Mental Hospital. There she meets Babbie with who she can get along. But also other children who all have a different background. Fortunately, her parents believe her when she says she did not sell drugs. Luckily Her father persuade the people who have said that Alice sold drugs to take this back. So Alice can go home. At home everything turns right and she even made some new friends. She met the girl fawn with whom she hang out a lot now. Then it is her birthday and even Joel surprises her and comes. Everything seems perfect. She thinks when a person gets older she should be able to discuss her problems and thoughts with other people, instead of just with a part of herself.
