Deception point

Written work (group work): 1. A shocking scientific discovery. A deception of staggering brilliance. A political thriller unike you’ve ever read… Comment on and explain the items mentioned in this teaser.

I couldn’t agree the teaser more. It is exactly these plotlines the reader is eager to uncover and they are also the one’s that keep the readers attention till the final pages. A scientific discovery with far reaching consequences, referring to the privatisation of NASA and the dangers of private space companies with different agendas. A well tought deception, being the main supplier of intrigues and unraveling throughout the novel uptill the last fifty pages or so (the fraud of the faked meteorite is unraveled completely when Xavia mentions the earthly chondrules). And an introduction in dirty politics with high stakes at risk. The odds constantly shifting sides, earning the label of ‘a political thriller (unlike I’ve ever read)’.
The element missing from the teaser is the notable informative value of Dan Brown’s firmly grounded written work. He relies on a number of individuals as well as agencies as a source for information on technologic and scientific level, giving his novel a surplus value. This also counts for the political parties, which are existing, as stated in the author’s note.

Written work (group work): 5. Describe the double narrative in this book and their evolution towards each other. What is the effect of this writing style on the continuity and the suspense in the story, and on the reading experience in general?

As words are exchanged in Washington, research is being done on the Antarctic. The composition of Deception Point is comparable to a multi-angled television series shrouded by mystery. Every sequence moving over to another point of view, in order to –as an all knowing reader- become aware of all the intrigues and building up psychological suspense by being made aware of the upcoming dangers before they occur. New questions rise up once another is made clear. This formula has proven itself a key to success, considering the praising critics and my own enjoyment of the reading.
On the Milne Ice Shelf, the NASA base and even more so the civilian scientists are being watched by a deadly Delta Force. While in Washington the odds are shifting sides after the announcement of the find of hard evidence of extraterrestrial life, provoking some psychological warfare activities between the harmed parties and their opposition. As the investigation of the meteorite’s authenticity progresses, Washington State Officials and one wonders who might be the brain behind this setup. The President, NASA, or someone else with similar interests?
As the story comes to an end, all attention shifts to the Goya, where Pickering, no longer exclusively directing the deadly force from within the threshold of his Washington stated office, and the surviving few, all aware of the deadly deception, come to an encounter. Meanwhile the rest of the Washington characters don’t come into play directly but are in a way aware if the implications on the Goya. In this final stage everything comes fitting together and we get to know the identity of ‘the controller’, revealing a painful truth.
