Uittreksel The book is about a boy named Cal. He lives with his father, Shamie, in Northern Ireland. His mother died a few years ago. Cal and his father are Catholics. They’re the only Catholics in the street. Cal loves playing the guitar. Sometimes he rents cassettes from the library. One day he went to the library to get some cassettes. There is a girl behind a table and Cal is immediately in love with her. Her name is Marcella. Cal has a best friend called Crilly, that he knows from high-school. Crilly works for the IRA and he ask Cal the help him. Crilly ask him to ride the car. Cal decides to do that. Shamie gets a pistol to protected himself. On Sunday Cal is behind Marcella in the church. He get to know where she lives and the next day he went to her house to sell some woodblock to her. An older women is opening the door and she says that he have to come back the other day to cut the blocks in little pieces and than she will pay. When he went to his house, he meets the protestant from his street. They want him to leave from there. He is beating up but the next day he went to Marcellas house again. There, he cuts the blocks and get his money. But also he gets a job offered in the potatoes. He has no other job so he says yes. Now he works on the farm from Marcellas parents! After a week Cal had a phone call from Crilly to rub a bank. He don’t want to do this but he did. Later on he the IRA ask him to drive again. Than he and Crilly Kill Robert, the husband of Marcella. A few days later the house from Cal and his father was set on fire. Cal send his father to a old friend of him and Cal himself is sleeping in a cottage near the farm of Marcella. Marcella and Cal make love and on the 24th of December the all get caught. Titelverklaring Dat is erg makkelijk. De hoofdpersoon heet natuurlijk Cal.
Wat heb ik geleerd? Ik heb van dit boek geleerd dat je niet zomaar ergens in mee moet gaan. Cal deed mee met de IRA terwijl hijzelf een katholiek is. Dit is natuurlijk al niet goed. Als hij dan ook nog zo makkelijk overal ja opzegt als hem iets gevraagd wordt is dat wel heel makkelijk voor de IRA. Iemand vermoorden was natuurlijk de grootste fout die hij heeft gemaakt. Nee over dit soort praktijken moet je eerst goed nadenken en niet zomaar ja zeggen. Ik zou dat dus wel doen. Maar het is natuurlijk niet waarschijnlijk dat ik voor dat soort dingen gevraagd zou worden. Door dit boek… Besef ik dat… de IRA erg slecht is en zomaar iedereen vraagt om mee te doen, belachelijk. Vraag ik me af… wat Cal bezielde om aan die dingen mee te doen en het dan ook nog te verzwijgen voor Marcella. Geloof ik dat… de katholieken meer aandacht hadden moeten krijgen. Mijn mening Het boek vond ik erg moeilijk om te lezen. Het taalgebruik vond ik erg lastig en ook de zinsopbouw. Het verhaal zelf was wel goed. Er gebeurde namelijk erg veel, maar soms weer een beetje te veel dan werd het weer ingewikkeld. Een overzicht krijgen van dit boek zou makkelijker zijn. Sommige dingen begreep ik niet en ook in de context was het dan moeilijk te begrijpen. En uren met een woordenboek zitten is ook niet alles.
