Summary ‘A walk to Remember’

The story takes place in 1958, in Beaufort, a small village in North-Carolina, USA. It is told by Landon Carter, who is the main character of the book. He tells about Beaufort; what it looks like and how the people who live there act to each other.

Landon also tells about the Christmas play, The Christmas Angel, which is written by Hegbert Sullivan, a Baptist minister and the father of the other main character, Jamie Sullivan. The play is sort of based on his own life. Every year the play is performed by the seniors of Beaufort High School.

The real story between Landon and Jamie begins when Landon asks Jamie out for the homecoming dance. He actually didn’t want to go with her because he and everyone else on his school thought she was a weird girl. She was a very religious girl, she always carries her Bible with her and she wore the same clothes every day. Because Landon really wanted to have a date and no other girls were left, he’d chose Jamie. Jamie would love to go, but she had one condition: Landon had to promise he won’t fall in love with her. Landon thought that won’t be a problem, but he was wrong..

Landon and Jamie went to the homecoming dance and after it Landon realises it wasn’t that bad with Jamie. The day after the homecoming dance Jamie called Landon to come to her house. Once he was arrived, Jamie asked him if he wanted to perform with her in the Christmas play. First he made up a lot of excuses and tried to convince her to ask anyone else for the play, but because Jamie really wanted the play to be good this year, he eventually agreed with her.

Because of the play Jamie and Landon spend a lot more time with each other, they studied their lines together and Landon often walks Jamie home.

The night before the play, Landon was very mean to Jamie, he hurt her, but after he said all those mean things he hated himself.

The play started, it all went fine. The last part of the play Jamie wore a beautiful white dress and she wore her hair down, Landon and the whole attendance were overwhelmed by her appearance. When Landon finally said:

‘you’re beautiful’ and everybody knew he really meant it.

After the play everything went back to normal, at least, Landon thought it would be. He said to Jamie he would made it up to her for the things he’d said to her, and Jamie reminded him. She asked him if he would collect the jars she’d put in stores all over the town to collect money for the orphanage she volunteers at.  Landon had no choice so he collected all the jars. When he was finished he counted all the money and he felt sorry it was so few, so he donated a lot of his own money, without saying it to Jamie. He also did this because Jamie wanted to give the orphans a special Christmas.

Landon had a very special night at the orphanage. When he gave Jamie a new sweater, Jamie gave him her Bible, she always carried with her. At that moment Landon realised himself he had fallen in love with Jamie.

A few days later, after Landon walked Jamie home, he kissed her. After the kiss Landon took Jamie out for dinner and after that they spent the whole time together. They did fun things, went to the orphanage and read the Bible together.

They have a lot of fun together, when Jamie sudden is sick all the time: she gets a cold, a fever, she is tired. Eventually she tells Landon she is sick, not just sick, she haves leukemia and the doctors couldn’t do anything for her anymore.

Landon was shocked by this news, he cried, he was afraid of what would happen and how he had to deal with it. Landon and Jamie were reading the Bible together to find comfort.

Jamie was getting more ill and had to go to the hospital a lot more, but she didn’t want to stay there overnight because she wanted to die at home. After a few days Jamie was so sick she couldn’t go home anymore, but Landon’s parents were willing to pay for extra care so she could stay home.

A long time Landon thought he really had to do something, and in all of a sudden he knew what it was, so he ran to Jamie’s house and asked Jamie to marry him and of course she said yes!

The wedding went exactly like Jamie wanted it to be. The most important thing to her was that her father walked down the aisle. Although Jamie was very weak she did walk to the isle, and everyone including Landon were moved by that.

That walk, was really a walk to remember.

When Landon was seventeen his life changed forever, he fell in love with Jamie and she changed him into a whole other person, a better person.

Assignment, The change of Landon.

When you’re reading the book you notice Landon became a whole other person at the end.

In the beginning Landon is a rascal, he is selfish and gives a lot about his status. He bullies the weird kids, including Jamie, and laughs about that. After the homecoming dance, Landon realises Jamie is a pretty nice girl, but he was to ‘cool’ to admit that to other people and also to himself. During the rehearsals for the play and the play itself, Landon started to respect Jamie and began to spend time with her. The people around Landon notice Landon started to change, he became more quiet and he was growing up. He cared more about Jamie than he cared about his friends. After Christmas night at the orphanage Landon realised he’d fallen in love with Jamie. When Jamie tells Landon she haves leukemia, Landon emotionally collapses. He is scared of losing ‘his’ Jamie, but he tries to be strong, for Jamie. Landon wanted to spent all the time she had left with her and wanted to give her everything she wanted, the wedding was one of those things.

And even though Jamie passed away, Landon felt luckier than before he met Jamie. Landon now knows what’s important in life and what’s not.

Assignment, comparisons to the novel

The book is much different than the movie, the storyline of the movie is kind of the same as the book, but there are many things changed for the movie:

*          The story in the book takes place in the 50’s but the movie takes place in the 90’s. Nicholas Sparks said he changed that because he thought the movie would be more appealing to the teens because that wasn’t such a long time ago.

*          The movie starts with a joke which gets out of hand, and when Landon got arrested his punishment was he had to tutor a child, clean the school and perform in the play. In the book Landon performs in the play after Jamie asked him for that.

*          In the book it’s about the ‘Christmas play’, which is written by Hegbert Sullivan, and in the movie it’s about the ‘Spring play’ written by Jamie Sullivan.

*          In the book is written that Jamie always carried here Bible with her, but in the movie it is kind of a notebook.

*          In the book Jamie and Landon are visiting the orphanage, but in the movie they are tutoring some children.

*          A small detail: in the book Jamie is always wearing a brown sweater, but in the movie she is wearing a green sweater.

Assignment, the theme of the book.

I think the theme of the book exists out of belief, growing up and respecting other people. I also think love haves a big role in the book.

Belief runs through the whole book: Jamie who is always carrying her book with her, you read people went to church a few times in the book and when Landon hears about Jamie’s disease he started to pray and read the Bible.

When you’re reading the book you realise Landon is growing up. He is more caring, respectful and he became more serious. Jamie has a big role in this. In about half a year Landon passed through a lot and that made him a whole other person, I think everyone experiences something in life what makes him or her grow up. And not only the growing older ‘thing’.

In the book it’s very clear Landon didn’t know Jamie at all. He was mean to her and he actually didn’t realised it. When Landon really knew who and how Jamie was he started to respect her because all of the good things she did and why she did it.

If I knew a person like Jamie, who stays strong in her belief, even when life gets so tough and everything, I would have so much respect for her.

‘It all comes down to who’s by your side.’ ( that’s on the book’s cover) the sentence ‘our love is like the wind. You cannot see it, but you can feel it’ said by Jamie is also very important.
