In 338 BC, Macedon (in the north eastern region of Greece) became to the most powerful city state in Greece. Macedon was led by Philip, the father of Alexander the Great. Macedon was the strongest city state in Greece so Macedon defeated all other city states easy. Then Phillip led a Greek expedition to Persia to defeat Persians, because the Persians had captured Macedon several times. With this expedition Phillip wanted to attack the Persians. He wanted that the Persians stopped with attacking Greece.

• Alexander the great becomes to a king.


Two years later during the expedition Philip died and Alexander becomes automatically to the king of Greece because he was the son of Philip. Now Alexander was in effect was the ruler of Greece. When Alexander becomed to a king he was just 18 years old. So he was a very young king in the history of Greece. When Alexander was a king he maked sure that the rest of Greece understood that Macedon was still the most powerful city state in Greece.

• Alexander’s journey to Persia.

In 334 BC Alexander set off with 40,000 soldiers to Persia and to finish the expedition to Persia and defeat them. On the left you can see the route of Alexander. When they had defeated the Persians Alexander wanted to go further. He wanted to go more East to parts in the world that were unknown for him and his army. In 326 BC the soldiers told him that they would not go further to the East. Alexander accepted his first defeat, caused by his own soldiers and turned back to Greece.

• Alexander’s death.

His wounds and work were a big weakness for Alexander. Alexander died on 13th June 323BC. He drank also water of the marshes wich were full of illnisses before the day he died. When Alexander died he went on a boating trip in Babylon. His body was moved to Alexandria in Egypt, where his body was buried. After Alexander’s death his huge empire was fall out. Instead, pieces of it fell to various individuals, most of these were Alexander's generals. His empire fall apart into: Asia, Egypt and Greece.

• How important was Alexander in Greece?

Alexander was important, because he had changed the map of the world with his army in little more than a decade. Greece becomed a huge empire with a big and strong army when Alexander the great was ruler over Greece. He was worshipped at many places in Greece and some people saw him as a God.

• Interesting factors.

Alexander was married with a Persian women and said to his generals to do this too.

Alexander’s father and his buddies want to tame a horse but they couldn’t tame the horse. But when Alexander came to the horse, the horse lowed his head and Alexander said some softly words and the horse was tamed! He could even ride on the horse! And no one had rided on the horse ever!

Alexander is found in some holy books such as the Koran and the Christian Bible.


In Central Asia he’s known as Sikandar. In the Islamitic world he’s known as Dulcarnain.

His legends true or false appear in 80 languages.

In legends he travelled to the heavens and to the underworld. In some other legends he went to the end of the world and even to the bottom of the sea!

There is also made a film about Alexander the great.
