Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 in Portsmouth, England. When he was a child he lived in Chatham and when he was 10 years old he moved with his family to London. He was the eldest child from his family. His father did not make that much but they were not poor. Because his father had debts his father a few months in prison. Because his father was Charles was not quite work. When he was 12 years he had left school and work in a shoe factory. That was not so easy because he wanted to be a writer. When his father was in prison his father had a small inheritance. That allowed Charles to return to school. When he was 15 years of school, he was persuaded to work at a law firm. Later he was court reporter and finally parliamentary reporter for a newspaper.
In 1933 he began writing short stories. He wrote a comic story in a series which was issued in 1836, Pickwick Papers. To a few months he became known. Then he became editor of a monthly magazine, Bentley's Miscellany.

Charles married Catherine Hogarth in 1936. They had 9 children. In 1858 they were separated.
Pickwick Papers was published because his career went very quickly. He began with the publication of Oliver Twist (1837) and Nicholas Nickleby (1838). He also made weekly episodes of The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge.
After a short holiday in the U.S. he returned to his busy job. He began publishing the annual Christmas Tales like A Christmas Carol (1843)
They are ordinary people who always play a role in his books.
In his divorce took Charles back at his rural home near Chatham. Around this time he got a relationship with a young actress, Ellen Ternan. This relationship lasted until his death. But it had always been secret. After 1869 his health began to deteriorate. On June 9, 1870 he suddenly deceased home. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.
