Keuze van verhaal: Ik heb voor dit verhaal gekozen omdat de titel mij erg aansprak.
Verwachting: Ik verwacht in dit verhaal te lezen over de dood van Elvis Presley.

Samenvatting:

Dit verhaal gaat over een jongetje van tien jaar oud dat in een weeshuis woont. Hij vraagt zich af waarom Elvis zoveel succes in zijn leven had, en hij zelf niet. Omdat hij ook de dingen wil die Elvis had gehad, gaat hij na bij mensen wat er nou anders aan Elvis was dan ieder ander persoon. Als hij erachter is gekomen wat er anders was aan Elvis: Zijn haar en hoe hij zijn lichaam bewoog, is hij van plan om dit bij zich zelf aan te passen.Als hij op een dag met de rest van het weehuis de stad ingaat om nieuwe schoenen te kopen en naar de kapper te gaan, is dit het perfecte moment om de glimende schoenen die Elvis had te kopen en zijn haar te laten knippen zoals Elvis dat had. Als hij eenmaal zijn nieuwe schoenen heeft, gaan ze naar de kapper. Hij vertelt de kapper dat hij z’n haar net zo wil als Elvis dat had. Maar als de kapper eenmaal bezig is met zijn haar te knippen komt iemand van het weeshuis naar de kapper toe en vertelt hem dat het niet mag en dat hij zijn haar kort moet scheren.De jongen is heel erg teleurgesteld, en ziet zijn Elvis droom sterven.

Mening: Ik vond het een leuk verhaal om te lezen, eindelijk een verhaal wat niet zo een geweldige afloop heeft. Ik zou dit verhaal ook aan andere aanraden omdat het niet al te moeilijk is, en het dus makkelijk ‘wegleest’

Keuze van verhaal: Ik heb niet echt met een bepaalde reden voor dit verhaal gekozen.
Verwachting: een verhaal over vlinders.

Samenvatting:

Dit verhaal gaat over een jongen die in een weehuis woont. Elke zaterdag als hij terug van het ontbijt naar de studeerzaal loopt hij even door het raam keek een groepsouder met een groot prikboord bij de vlinderstruik vlinders aan het verzamelen was. Hij prikte met punaises door de kop en door de 2 vleugels. De jongen vind dit een erg gruwel daad en besluit actie te ondernemen. Als de groepsouder eventjes weg is, stapt hij naar buiten en bekijkt het prikboord, hij ziet dat één vlinder nog probeert te vechten voor z’n leven en haalt dus de punaises uit de vlinder en de vlinder vliegt weg maar red het toch niet, en valt dood neer. Op dat moment komt de groepsouder naar hem toe en ziet wat hij aan het doen is. Hij begint tegen hem te schreeuwen en slaat het prikboord tegen zijn hoofd waardoor alle vlinders van het prikboord afvliegen. De groepsouder geeft hem de opdracht om alle vlinders te verzamelen en samen met het prikboord weg te gooien. Hij verzamelt alle vlinders en stopt hen in een schoenendoos en begraaft die en bid voor hen.
En elk jaar wanneer de vlinders naar het weeshuis kwamen, rende hij naar buiten om ze weg te jagen, hij wou ze behoeden voor hun dood.

Mary en haar grootmoeder Eliza wonen in een klein huisje aan de rand van een bos. Ze wonen er al jaren zonder dat er veel gebeurt. Maar op een dag komen mannen haar grootmoeder ophalen, ze beweren dat ze een heks is. Nadat ze haar gemarteld hebben bekent ze alles wat ze willen weten. Na de ophanging bedenkt Mary dat ze weg moet want zij is nu volgens anderen ook een heks.

Ze wordt door een vreemde, rijke vrouw in een rijtuig meegenomen. Ze wil niet zeggen wie ze is, maar Mary denkt dat het haar moeder is. In een herberg wordt ze schoon gemaakt en krijgt ze nieuwe kleren aan. Om de heksen vervolging te ontlopen moet ze naar de ‘Nieuwe Wereld’, naar Amerika! Ze kan natuurlijk niet alleen gaan en dus sluit ze zich aan bij de puriteinen.

Dat zijn mensen die een eigen kerk en een nieuw leven willen beginnen. Onder leiding van een dominee gaan ze een plek voor een nieuwe stad zoeken.

De zeereis was en ramp en Mary leert de mensen van deze nieuwe gemeenschap kennen. Ze zijn bijgelovig en doen alles wat de dominee van hun verlangt. Maar ze krijgt ook een nieuwe ‘moeder’: Martha.

De mensen denken dat Amerika een wonderland is , maar als er eenmaal zijn vallen ze terug in de werkelijkheid. Ook hier moet je knokken voor je bestaan. Door Indiaanse gidsen worden ze naar het dorp Beola gebracht. Daar zijn andere puriteinen en ze gaan bij hun wonen. Mary voelt zich hier niet thuis en ze gaat steeds vaker kruiden zoeken in het bos, ze moet er dan wel voor zorgen dat niemand haar ziet. Op een van haar zwerftochten leert ze een Indiaan kennen, hij heeft eerder ook voor gids gespeeld. Hij leert haar veel over de planten en dieren, ze worden vrienden. Maar van Martha mag ze niet meer naar het bos omdat er gepraat wordt.

De winter valt in en het word ijskoud. In de winter leert Mary nog iemand beter kennen en dat is Rebecca. Ze komt ook nog een poosje bij haar inwonen omdat de dominee het beter vindt dat ze bij een echt gezin woont. Als het lente wordt verbeterd de situatie niet , de oogst mislukt en veel dieren zijn in de winter gestorven.

Men denkt dat er een heks onder hen is en natuurlijk wordt Mary aangewezen want is zij niet de laatste die zich bij hen aan sloot en die zich niet wil aanpassen? Er is maar een uitweg voor Mary en dat is vluchten. Op de dag van haar vlucht eindigt haar dagboek: Heksendochter

Summary:

The story takes place in the USA, in the house of a actress called Chris MacNeal (Ellen Burstyn). Her daughter Reagan Theresa MacNeal (Linda Blair) is a very gentle girl who never curses or anything like that. Her father is in Europe. She has something wrong with her nerves for which she goes to a docter. He gives her an injection and that’s it. A moment later she start using obscene words. She says to the docter: "Get your fingers away from my goddamned cunt." She can’t sleep anymore because of her bed, it goes up and down. It get worse and worse and the doctors don’t have a solution for it. Slowly she turns into a monster. The doctors don’t even know what’s wrong with her. It is much worse than a disorder of the nerves. Then a doctor says that there was also a case in Africa. The person there seemed to be possessed by a demon. The other doctors kind of laugh at him, but Chris takes it serious and goes talking to a priest. The priest named Damien Karras (Jason Miller) just lost his mother. She lived alone and at a moment he transferred her to a hospital. She died there and he thinks it’s his fault. He take a look at Reagan and she starts talking Latin, French and other languages. He taped it. He still isn’t convinced she’s a possessed. When he played the tape backwards he hears that she called a other priest: Merrin. Now he’s convinced that she’s possessed because Merrin (Max von Sydow) exorcissed the demon in the case in Africa. He goes to the church because if you want to preform an exorcism you need permission of the church. He got permission and he is supposed to assist Merrin. First it don’t seems to work. Reagan is tied up. And at a moment she said with the voice of Karras’s mothers: "Why did you do this to me"? He walks out of the room and let Merrin alone. When he comes back, Merrin is dead, and Reagan isn’t tied up anymore. He starts a fight with the demon and screams to it: "Come in me, devil,"
a couple of times. Then the demon leaves the body Reagan and comes into the body of Damien. With his last strength he jumps out of the window. With the demon inside of him. Outside the window he falls on a long stair and he dies. Reagan can’t remember anything about it. Now it’s all finished they move to LA.

My personal opinion:
Well, I heard a lot about this movie. It was so scary. I read that the version which was showed in the cinema’s was so scary that people run screaming away from the cinema’s. This is the full version, like it was supposed to be, in de cinema version they cut 11 minutes away because it was to scary. I also think it was a very scary movie, I watched with someone else and we got scared alot!

Rush hour

Summary:

This film is about the eleven-year old daughter of the Chinese consul. She gets’ abducted and the kidnappers ask for a ransom of fifty million dollars. If the consul does not manage to deliver the money to the kidnappers, the girl will die! The FBI is working on the case, but the consul wants to bring in a Chinese agent who will help to bring the girl back. So, he brings an old friend of his (detective Lee) over with the instruction to bring back his daughter.
The FBI however, does not approve, and therefore asks the LAPD if they can send someone who will keep detective Lee out of their way until the case is solved. The LAPD sends detective James Carter to the FBI to keep Lee out of the way. James Carter always dreamed of a job with the FBI, but he gets very angry when he learns what his assignment will be! He doesn’t feel like babysitting a foreign detective.
For this reason, the two personalities don’t mix very well. In addition, James Carter is not used to have a partner. He always worked alone, doesn’t want a partner and doesn’t need one either. Detective Lee learns very quickly that Carter doesn’t want to help him, and Lee tries to get to the consul.
There, Carter and Lee agree to get the daughter back together. It is then that they notice that they form a good team together. The FBI, however, is not very happy with this development and send Lee back to Hong Kong after Lee and Carter almost screw the whole case up!
Carter convinces Lee to get of the airplane only minutes before the plane takes off. Without the FBI knowing they go to the place where money and girl will be exchanged. The consul has agreed to pay the money and the exchange will take place in a Chinese museum. The daughter of the consul is waiting outside in a car. She is wearing a vest filled with explosives controlled by a remote control. Detective Carter gets all the people outside the museum to start with and then gets the girl with the explosives inside. If the kidnappers decide to blow the bomb, the fifty million and the kidnappers will go with it! This leaves but one choice to the kidnappers: get the money and get out as fast as possible. The bomb gets disconnected and Lee takes it with him to stop the criminals.

My opinion:

I think this is a very nice movie; it has alot of action in it, what I like.
I would definantly recommend this movie to others

American history X:

Summary:

American History X is a movie about the consequences of racism as a family is torn apart by hate. The film follows a one man’s struggle to reform himself and save his brother after living a life consumed by violence. Written by David McKenna and directed by Tony Kave, American History X is produced by John Morrissey. The story unfold through the eyes of Danny Vinyard(Edward Furlong), who idolizes his older brother Derek(Edward Norton). Seeking retribution for his father’s murder Derek find’s himself transformed by a philosophy of hate as he turns into a charismatic leader of a local white power movement. DOC. He hates everyone who is not white. So that includes all black people, yellow, red, everyone but white. He’s a real neo-nazi. Despite his intelligence, he kill’s 2 black men when they try to steal his car. This leads to prison sentence.

Three years later, everyone awaits for Derek’s return: His mother Doris(Beverly D’Angelo) who prays for his safety; his girlfriend Stacey(Fairuza Balk) who longs for his return and most of all Danny, who is desperate for his brother’s love and guidance.

On the day of Derek’s release from prison, Danny hands in a book report on Hitler’s "Mein Kampf". Enraged the school principal(Avery Brooks) demands that Danny writes a paper on the circumstances that led to Derek’s prisoning.
Danny looks very much up to his older brother. He thinks he is really great and he doesn’t understand him when he get’s out of prison. Because Derek is a changed man. He has totally changed in prison. Ashamed of his past, he is now in a race to save Danny and the Vinyard Family from the violence he’s brought down upon them.
After he told Danny what he has gone true in prison, Danny understand’s him. When it seems like everything is okay Danny get’s shot at school by a black boy. And that when he finally understand what is important in life.

My opinion:

I found this a very interesting movie, it has shown me how a person can change!
I would recommend this movie to others.

Dear Grandma,

How are you?
We have not talked for a while, so I thought you would like to here something from me.
The last time we met was in the summer vacation. That is a long time ago.
Things are going fine around here. Dad works a lot and mum is busy around the house,
Lital is going to kindergarten and I am going to high school every day.

I will tell you something about school.
This year I started fourth grade, I am on school now for ten weeks.
In the vacation I really though that it was going to be hard working this year, but it might have been worse. Sometimes I have allot of homework to do,but I still have a lot of time to do other things.

I do not have a particular favourite subject, but I do like maths and chemistry.
What I do not like at all is German, I think it is a terrible language.
The same is with the teachers, some are annoying and some are really nice.
Of course when the teacher is nice, the subject is also more interesting.
School is not only boring, there are good things.
The weeks are going very quickly, in a few weeks it is winter vacation again. So it is not so bad.

But enough about school, there is more I want to tell you about.
My family from the U.S.A are coming here for eight days and I’m very exited about that.
And Lital is going very good in swimming, she likes it very much. Here teachers says that she might get here swimming diploma next year.

Dear Mr. Davies,

Thank you for the letter you wrote to us on 2nd of May.
I’m glad that you approached us with this complain, because we almost never get a complaint of our customers. Therefore we are going to do everything that is possible to tackle this problem. We agree that every customer has the right to return goods that do not come up to the usual standards. I hope that you will except our help, because it would be a pitty if we would not continue doing business in the future.

I would like to ask you to send the packages back in the original box, by train or car, as soon as possible. When the goods arrive my staff will examine the articles carefully, under wich the toy torpedo, the camping knife and particularly the two piano’s. I can not imagine what could possibly be the matter with the radio’s and the pluche monkey’s and zebra’s, but we will also be checking them.

We are going to try to find the cause of the problem, but I do not think that we will find much.
On request of the warehouse manager I would finally want to ask you if you could send us a list of all of the items that you have returned.

I hope that we can solve this problem to your satisfaction and continue to do business with eachother.
