Checkmate; “whodunit”
Checkmate is a detective story, a “whodunit”, in which we see a mild parody on the detective.
The story is about three people who are involved in a murder case. All three have a motive and an alibi. The murdered person, Douglas Deeppockets, is filthy rich and very famous and this gives someone a reason to kill him. This someone is nobody less than his own wife, Diana Deeppockets. She prepares a plan together with her lover Toby Tireless to kill him. What she doesn’t know is that Toby and Douglas have planned a fake murder to get to know her real face. Slowly everything starts to get out of hand and when Douglas finds out that Toby and Diana are together in a real conspiracy to get Douglas’ money he decides to fake his death and disguise himself as his lawyer afterwards. When Diana visits him, as he had expected, he promised her to rewrite Douglas’ testament after receiving some bribe money. Toby, who had heard the conversation between them, was shocked by the fact that Diana had betrayed him. He also decides to go to the lawyer (still Douglas in disguise) to make him rewrite the testament again. After offering the lawyer some bribe money, Toby gets what he wanted: a second rewrite of the testament.
Now Douglas knows everything about Toby and Diana’s schemes he decides to catch them red handed, but simultaneously Toby wants to catch his lover Diana red handed. So, all three of them go incognito. Douglas disguises himself as Derek Deeppockets, brother of the already “deceased” Douglas and journalist. As he tries to take pictures for evidence of the murder and to entrap Diana and Toby, Toby on the other hand disguises himself as a detective who wants to entrap Diana, but when Diana finds out about the detective who's after her, SHE disguise herself as Kate May, the French sister of Diana. And this is how everything gets messed-up until... they all somehow get to know about their real identities and get in serious trouble.
My opinion:
As I remember the last play I had visited last year about Romeo and Juliet, I must admit that this time it was much more fun. They had made me laugh plenty of times and perfectly involved the public in the play.
The decor was unfortunately quite empty and sad. But as the actors knew this deficiency, they told us to imagine a scenery ourselves to fill the emptiness. This made me forget the imperfection and enjoy the play again. The actors on the other hand were fabulous, just great! Diana, for example, had to do weird things on stage and the way she did them was excellent and convincing. I am not only talking about the character Diana, but all of them were quite good actors and I hope they once get their breakthrough’s one day. Well, they can consider this play as a breakthrough as well, because they have perfectly managed to win the public for themselves in a humorous way, in a foreign country!
My favorite part was when a girl from the public was asked to join them in a scene. It was hilarious the way she ran up the stage and “screamed”: “Stop!”. I know this might sound mean, but I’m being honest and that part made me really laugh more than ever.
Finally I really enjoyed the play and I recommend anyone who has a sense of humor to watch the play.
