Who decides?

It is a well spoken subject. People all over the world talk and discuss about it. Sometimes it is legal, sometimes it is illegal. It does not only have something to do with the law, another very important thing is religion. Is it against God His words? Everybody has his own view about this subject, every country it’s own laws. For example in the Netherlands it is legal and in Scotland it is illegal. In this case I am glad that I live in the Netherlands because my opinion is that if you want to have an abortion, you should have the opportunity. Ofcourse you should not use an abortion as a contraceptive but in some cases I think it is a necessity.

Because first of all you can be pregnant unwanted. A well known example is a woman being raped. It can happen to any women and you can not do anything about it. In the Netherlands is twelve percent of all women raped. One in twelve women! Besides the traumatic event you are expecting a baby. Most of the time unwanted. The second thing is that if you are pregnant unwanted, the baby is often unwanted too. So it is not only sad for the mother who did not want to have a child, but it is also sad for the child itself. Eventually the baby knows that he or she was not welcome, the question is if you want to put the child in such a bad situation. So not only the mother suffers of having an ‘unexpected’ child, also the child suffers of the tragical happening.


Secondly, you can debate whether the embryo is already a ‘real’ human being. Does it only lives or does it has awareness already? This is something not one biologic scientist knows. The church as against says that the embryo is alredy a ‘real’ human. So if you have an abortion, you are a murderer according to the church. But can the church determine that? I think that the scientists know better whether the embryo is already a ‘real’ human being or not, they can investigate in what stage the embryo is. So they can determine if it is almost a baby or just some cells. I do not believe that you are conciously living in your mothers belly. Imagine that one time! I think that if you are not a real human you can not be treated as a ‘real’ human. So bad luck for the cells in this case!

My last point is that you are the boss of your own body. No one else may decide over your own flesh and blood. It would be rediculous if somebody else can decide if you take an abortion or whether you should have to keep the child! It is the same thing if I decide for you that you have to take a tattoo. That is rediculous too! Besides that fact, you also may decide to have an abortion not because you are raped or had an accident, but for other reasons. For example your physical health, think of having cancer and only 2 more years to live. Than you can decide to take an abortion although you always wanted to have a child. An other thing can be economical or social problems. Think of not enough money to nurture a child. What if you are addicted on drugs or alcohol? Is it a good environment for a child?

So my view on abortion is that abortion should be legal for every woman all over the world. You have to be the boss over your own body, nobody else can decide for you about having a child. No law and no God. Besides that I believe that not every women can take care of a child because of economical physical or social reasons. No job, terrible ill or you just can not live with a child whose father is a rapist. Because it is not nothing to have a child. It is not just a funny thing, you are ‘playing’ with one’s future life.
