Hello everybody we’re going to talk about: Miffy.
In Dutch her name is Nijntje.
Miffy’s history
Miffy was born in 1955. Dick Bruna created her, because of that they call him Miffy’s father. He remembered the real pet bunnies he had when he was young. In 1955 he had drawn a bunny on his paper. For the first time, there she was, our Miffy.
He had drawn a girl bunny, because he preferred to draw a dress rather than trousers. The Miffy in that book is now 48 years old, but in her books she stays forever young. Still it took some time till she looked the way we know her today.
In the first Miffy books she looked a bit like a fabric toy animal with strange ears. But since 1963 she became our own Miffy.
Miffy has 2 funny, straight ears. She looks always happy with her big, black eyes. Whatever sides Miffy’s walking, it seems she’s coming your way. Miffy has many adventures. All of her books are about the ordinary things in life of little bunnies and children.
Miffy’s names
Miffy has a lot of different names in different countries:
Nijntje in the Netherlands,
Miffy in England and in Germany,
Kleintjie or Umtwanana in South-Africa,
Coelhinho in Portugal,
and Mouffe in France.
Miffy also appears in Arabic, Hebrew and in Japanese.
Now Miffy is the international name of the Dutch Nijntje Pluis.
Dick Bruna’s work
Dick Bruna made thousands of covers for books, billboards, stamps and of course books for children. The sentences in his books are very short and they always rhyme.
Dick Bruna has made fifteen picture books about Miffy. Miffy can be found on clothes, toys, and puzzles. Dick Bruna has also made more than 80 picture books about the bears Boris and Barbara, the pig Poppy, the dog Snuffy and some other, less famous characters.
About Dick Bruna
Dick Bruna was born in the summer of 1927 in Utrecht. His parents named him after his grandfather Hendrik Magdalenus. But because he was a chubby, little child his family called him Dik or Dikkie. Dick has always loved to draw. He realised that he wanted to become an artist. So he did and now we all know his work.
Dick Bruna married in 1953 with Irene de Jongh. They have 3 children. 2 sons: Sierk and Marc and 1 daughter: Madelon. More recently Dick became grandfather. Dick still continues his work. But no matter how famous he is, he always shows his work to his wife first. If she don’t like it Dick won’t publish it.
