The word ‘‘nigger’’

Just a common word, but the meaning of it and the context in which it is used isn’t normal. For the most of us the word ‘nigger’ isn’t special, it’s a word to distinguish races. But for some of us it is an invective. It’s all about racism. And that’s something the world is unfortunately filled with. With the use of the word ‘‘nigger’’ as an invective you situate yourself as part of a group which uses the word ‘nigger’ to discriminate black people. So the use of the word ‘‘nigger’’ is more classifying then you would think.

The Negative effects of using the word ‘nigger’

The word ‘nigger’ is most of the time used as an invective. But why? We don't call someone names for example 'blank' or 'white man'.
‘Nigger’ says something about people with a dark colour of the skin. Every people get a different colour of skin, but as a ‘nigger’ you can be a stranger in European society, because of your skin. ‘Nigger’ is used as an invective but that's a little bit strange because the word is just an indication for a black person. ‘We' abuse with ‘nigger’ but ‘nigger’s or people who haven't got a blank colour of the skin don't abuse us for example 'blank' or 'white man'. Actually it is strange that we call someone names with complexion, Blank people called each other: bitch or asshole. ‘nigger’s will have their own abusive words.
But why call Blank people, black people, and ‘nigger’s? That's just racism! But on the other side, you don't have the word ‘nigger’ understand like it's a racist word; it's just a group human with the same colour of the skin. Just like Dutchman are called 'kaaskop'. Is it a form of racism? In fact it's the same.

The influence of rappers and their culture

Rappers like 50 cent, Eminem, Akon, De La Soul, Busta Rhyme and Dr. Dre. All examples of American rappers. Because they’re famous, we all know them. They’re idols for a lot of teenagers. Especially insecure teenagers.
When the rappers use the word ‘nigger’ all the time, teenagers and other people think it’s normal to term, not only black people, but all kinds of people with ‘nigger’.
Like: “Hey ‘nigger’! How are you t’day?”
With the common use of the word among rappers and other artist it’s cool for teenagers to use the word in the society. But not just as a term, also as an invective. And that is wrong. Teenagers don’t always realise the meaning of the word and the impact it can have on a person who feels negative approached. I think parents, police men, teachers and other people who contribute on the education of children and teenagers should be allowed to correct them on this level.
If we all support that and help each other to give the word ‘nigger’ a less negative intent it would be great. But we must realise that we have to work together as a team and support each other in this task, because it isn’t easy to correct teenagers and children on that level.
