The Remains of the day
Door: Kazuo Ishiguro Samenvatting: This book is about an english butler. His name is Stevens. His boss is called Lord Farraday. The house where he’s working is called Darlington Hall. The house is called after Lord Darlington, a Lord Stevens has worked for in the past. When Lord Darlington died, Lord Farraday bought the house and it’s employees. But right now, the house has too less employees. Some people have left the house. One of them is Miss Kenton. She married to Mr. Benn and moved to Cornwall. Stevens really liked Miss Kenton. It could have worked out between them, but they only had a strong connection. One day, Lord Farraday thinks Stevens needs some days off. He barrows his car to Stevens. He desides to travel through England, to see something from the country and to meat Miss Kenton. He had read in books about England that Cornwall is a beautifull part of the country, so he’s looking forward to the trip. On his journey he stops at a top of a hill to look at the beautifull countryside and landscapes. In the nights he stays at hotels or pensions. But on one evening his car is out of gas and he can’t find a hotel. A habitant of the village sees him wondering through the little place and invites him to stay at his house. A lot of people come to visit his house, because they are curious about the strange gast, butler Stevens. The people think he’s a Lord instead of a butler, because he’s acting dignified and he looks quiet properly. They talk about recognising Lords and about dignity. Stevens doesn’t tell the people that he’s only a butler, but he also feels bad about it. On his way to Cornwall hes thinking about a lot of things. For example the fact that Lord Farraday always talks with some sort of mockery. Stevens never jokes back, because he can’t come up with something like that. He’s a bit worried about that. Maybe Lord Farraday likes it that he never jokes back. Stevens also looks back at the time on Darlington Hall when Lord Darlington was the owner. This lord organised very unofficial meetings there about the Pact of Versailles. He thougt that Germany was at a disadvantage, injured. Darlington Hall became a countor for the Nazi’s, but Stevens never really noticed it. He doesn’t see their meanings and he even gets two Jewish girls fired. But Stevens stays loyal to his boss, he keeps serving him. He tries to keep dignified like his Lord to serve him. Even if his dad is dieing, he keeps serving the guests of the house. In the meantime he has a good and strong connection with Miss Kenton, but the also have a lot of arguings. One day Miss Kenton only wants to communicate with little letters. When she tells Stevens she is going to get married, Stevens is really off his stroke. Not only because he loses a good collegue, but he doesn’t want to admit that. So after all these years he’s happy to meet her again. They finally meet in a coffeehouse. The atmosphere is a bit unaccustomed and strange. But they soon talk about the past, about the days in Darlington Hall. At the end of the day they leave to their own houses. Stevens is glad that he had met Miss Kenton onve again. After all this, he totally devotes himself again to his work as a butler for Lord Farraday.
