Summary

Scene 1
The family White is a family living at the countryside, mom, dad, and their son Herbert. On a night Sergeant-Major Morris, a friend of the White’s, pays the family a visit and tells about the monkey’s paw, which grants its owner three wishes. These wishes will be granted at such a way that it could be coincidence. He tells that he got the paw from a man whose third wish was that he would die. He had made three wishes himself too. When he shows the family the paw, he instantly throws it into the fireplace. Mr. White snatches it out. When the Sergeant leaves the house, he also leaves the paw behind. Mr. White, obsessed by Sir  Morris’ story, wants to ‘try out’ the paw. Mrs. White and Herbert don’t have a good feeling about it. Mr. White explains his family that he would wish for £200,- to pay off the mortgage. He suddenly drops the paw and claims ‘As I wished, it twisted in my hand like a snake.’ A short while after this happened, Herbert leaves the house to go to work.

Scene 2
The next morning, while Mr. and Mrs. White are having breakfast, someone knocks on the door. It’s the postman with a letter for John White. It was just a letter from the bank which said the mortgage intrest was £200,-. When Mr. and Mrs. White have had breakfast, once again someone knocks on the door. It’s Mr. Sampson. He comes from the electrical works. Mrs. White first says that if he was looking for Herbert he had to wait a moment. Mr. Sampson tells that he didn’t come for Herbert. Again Mrs. White interrupts him, saying that he could have come with Herbert. Mr. White Has got a strange feeling and gives Mr. Sampson the opportunity to say what he had to say. Herbert was dead, caught by the machinery while telling his friends a story. Thought the company disclaims all responsibility, it does present the family a certain sum as compensation; £200,-.

Scene 3
A few days pass. One night Mrs. White remembers the paw and asks Mr. White to get it. When he has found it, Mrs. White wants him to use it. Since he had had only one wish, he could wish another two times. The second wish should be, according to Mrs. White, that their son would be alive again. Mr. White doesn’t think it’s a good idea, but does make the wish when Mrs. White insists. Mrs. White notices nothing changed at all and sits down in an armchair feeling miserable. Suddenly someone knocks on the door. Mrs. White says it had to be their son, Herbert. Mr. White tries to stop her opening the door, since he just wished him alive, nothing about how he might look like. Mrs. White doesn’t (want to) hear what he is saying an walks to the door, shouting ‘I’m coming, Herbert. I’m coming’. Mr. White remembers that there is one wish left and searches the paw. Just before Mrs. White was able to open the door, Mr. White wished his son being dead again. When Mrs. White opened the door … there was nothing…

The title ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ just tells what the whole story is about. Nothing more, nothing less. Themes of this book are: horror, wizardry, and, in a certain way, faith.

Motivatie boekkeuze & mening

Het verhaal is goed uitgewerkt, het blijft dan wel oppervlakkig, maar dit verhaal heeft ook geen diepgang nodig. Het laat ook een andere manier van wensen zien. Vaak wordt er over wensen geschreven/gesproken als iets wat uitkomt zonder negatieve uitwerkingen. In dit boek is dat wel het geval. Mr. White wenst £200,- om zijn hypotheek the kunnen afbetalen. Deze £200,- krijgt hij van het bedrijf waar zijn zoon werkt nadat zijn zoon is omgekomen doordat hij was gegrepen door machines. Het verhaal komt mij wel enigszins bekent voor, waarvan weet ik niet.
De belangrijkste gebeurtenis is dat Sir Morris de ‘Paw’ achterlaat bij de familie White. Dit bezoekje is door de auteur goed uitgewerkt met een lang gesprek tussen de familie en Sir Morris. De eerste wens komt uit bij een ongeval, de tweede wordt gevolgd door geklop op de deur en de derde door… niets.
Al deze gebeurtenissen lopen goed in elkaar over. Terwijl je het leest, met uitzondering van de laatste pagina’s, als Herbert(?) weer op de stoep staat, krijg je echt het idee dat het allemaal toeval is wat er gebeurt.
Ook zijn de personages in dit verhaal goed beschreven. Er wordt niets te veel verteld, maar wel zo veel om ze goed genoeg te kennen om hun reacties op bepaalde gebeurtenissen te kunnen begrijpen.         Mr. White is bijvoorbeeld nieuwsgierig naar vreemde dingen, zoals de ‘Paw’, maar wel voorzichtig. Mrs. White is precies het tegenovergestelde, ze heeft weinig aandacht voor het verhaal van Sir Morris, maar als ze denkt dat Herbert weer voor de deur staat, denkt ze niet na over hoe hij daar zal staan.
Het is dus begrijpelijk dat Mr. White de derde wens gebruikt om te voorkomen dat zijn vrouw Herbert ziet zoals hij op dat moment zou zijn.
De spanning komt in dit verhaal halverwege de tweede scène, wanneer Mr. Sampson aanklopt om het nieuws te brengen. Het eerste deel is rustig leeswerk, maar later wordt je nieuwsgierig naar wat de tweede wens zal worden, naar wat er zal gebeuren na de tweede wens, enz. Aan het einde van het boek, wanneer er niemand voor de deur blijkt te staan, vraag je je nog wel af wat of wie het was, hierop krijg je geen antwoord, ofwel, vul maar in.
Het verhaal is goed leesbaar. Het taalgebruik is eenvoudig en een grote woordenschat nodig om het boek te kunnen begrijpen.
Dit boek is een aanrader voor iemand die van spanning houdt en nog een puntje erbij moet lezen. Ook gezien het taalgebruik is dit ook een geschikt boek voor iedereen wiens sterkste van niet Engels is, maar toch wel van dit genre houdt. Hoewel het in feite maar een kort verhaal is, is het toch goed uitgewerkt en ook goed geschreven.
