Why did you choose this book?
I chose the book because I had already read other books of C.S. Lewis in Dutch, this one was only in the library in English so I could use it for English.

What were your expectations of this book?
I expected two children who would travel to another world only trough a wardrobe (just like in the Lion, the Witch and the wardrobe). I also expected there to be a "deeper" story because that was also so in the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

What was your first reaction afterwards?
I liked the book because it was exciting and had a good end. There wasn’t a wardrobe!!

Short summary
The book is about Digory and Polly, two children living in London. Digory lives there with his aunt and Uncle because his mother is very ill. When they are exploring their rowhouse, they come upon Digory's Uncle Andrew’s study. Then Polly touches one of Uncle Andrew’s magic rings and she disappears. Digory decides to go after her to bring her home. They find out they are in a wood between different worlds. Using the rings, they jump into one of the pools and come in the empty dead world of Charn, where they accidentally awaken the evil witch Jadis, who destroyed Charn and now wants to take over other worlds.

Then Jadis comes home with them to London, where she destroyes a lot until Digory and Polly use the rings to bring her back to the wood. Only they jump into the wrong pool and come in the wrong world. Uncle Andrew, Polly and Digory take a hansom with a horse and enter a world that is just being created. The Creator, Aslan the great Lion, sends Digory on a quest to protect the young land of Narnia from the evil that has entered it.

Digory has to get an apple of the tree that will make Jadis go away out of Narnia. At the end the mean Jadis is gone and Digory get’s a special apple from Aslan to cure his sick mother. She gets well again and Polly and Digory put the magic rings in the ground so no one could ever use them again.

How was the story build?
The story is build very logical and clear; there are no different stories or different times in the book.(there was a time difference between London and Narnia but those two times were separated from each other in the story)

In how many time does the story take place?
The story taked in London time maybe a half hour. In the Narnia time it took much longer.

The Author:
About C.S. Lewis

Clive Staples Lewis was born on November 29, 1898 in Belfast, Ireland. His father was a lawyer, so Lewis grew up surrounded by books, which he read while he was a child during "seemingly endless rainy afternoons." His mother died when he was a child, and Lewis spent most of his time in the company of his older brother, Warnie  with who he played and created imaginary lands and characters. He didn’t like school much so he got a private tutor who prepared him to study for Oxford.

In 1917 he took a "Classical Scholarship" to University College.
He was in the army for a short time and after that he tutored at a English university for 30 years. He was later a Professor of ‘Medieval and Renaissance English Literature’ at Cambridge for ten years. His love for writing began and he started to write books one of those was "The Magician’s Nephew" and the other Narnia. Books. Lewis died in November 1963.

Explanation of the title:
The title of the book is: ‘The Magician’s Nephew’
The book is called that way because the most important character in the book; Digory, is the nephew of a magician. That is how the whole story got started: the magic rings of uncle Andrew touched by polly and then by Digory to get Polly back.

Opdr 9
The story could have been in another time but I think that if the story was in another time it would be less realistic then it is now.

Opdr 10
I think England was the perfect place for this story because in England fairytales are much more popular then in the rest of the world and because of all the typical  English things.

Characters:
Most important characters;
Digory (Nephew) : Was the most important character. It was the nephew from uncle Andrew who created the magic rings. He was a very brave boy; he went after Polly to the unknown  world to bring her back and he got the apple for Aslan. He was also very quick angry, like in Charn. Polly (Friend/Neighbour): became a good friend of Digory when they came to live next to each other.she also went with him to all the different worlds. She was also a very important Character because she was there too.

Other Characters:
Aslan (lion)

Queen Jadis (Witch)

Uncle Andrew (Magician)

Fledge (Cabby's horse)

Cabby and his wife

Reaction after reading the book:
Exciting  2
Funny    1
Realistic 1
Fantasy  3
Original 3
Easy to understand 3

I thought the book was very exciting when the witch was there and she had power over them. I didn’t really find much funny parts in the book. I don’t think that it’s realistic that when you touch a ring you disappear to another world. I think that it was very much a fantasy-story. I also think that it was kind of original, I don’t think I ever read a book about this before. I think it was easy to understand.

My opinion
I think that "The Magician’s Nephew" a nice book to read is. It is a fantasystory about two children who accidentally discover different worlds by Magical rings. Not only is it just a story, it has a deeper meaning. C.S. Lewis always has a deeper meaning from a story from the Bible in his books. This book is about different and new worlds (Narnia) so I guess that he was trying to putt a link between this story and the story of Adam and Eve.(also about a new world)

Anyway, I liked reading the book.
