Introduction

The books are set in a medieval sort of time in a fantasy world called Middle-Earth. Middle-Earth is divided into several countries with all different races and various tongues. There are many kinds of creatures like Dwarves, Elves, Orcs, Hobbits, Goblins, Wargs, Uruk-Hai and many more. The Lord of the Rings is Sauron, an evil lord who made 21 magic rings which he - all but one - gave away:

Three Rings for The Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for the Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
This One Ring was cut from his finger by Isildur, a prince of the Men. Sauron wants his Ring back at any cost. The only way to destroy this Ring is to throw it in the fire where it has been created. This fire is Mount Doom a volcano in Mordor the Black Land of Sauron, a place of death were no-one dares to dwell.
Middle-Earth

In Eriador it was always safe till now but Sauron knows the Ring is in the Shire so he sends his Nazgûl to find the Ring. In the west of Eriador lies Lindon. From that land the Elves flee to the Undying-Lands.
In the ancient days Arnor lied in Eriador. It was a land of the Men and it was a strong and beautiful. After Isildur's death the Dunedain, his heirs and rangers who wanted and still want to protect Arnor came to live over there but the Witch-king destroyed Arnor long ago.
In the East of Eriador are the Misty Mountains. At the other side of the Misty Mountains lies Rhovanion or Wild land. Over here are Lórien and Mirkwood, two forests where Elves live and many lonely or little groups of mountains are. In the south are Gondor, Rohan and the evil country Mordor.
Rohan was almost always safe from war but in Gondor there was always the threat of Mordor. Now Sauron, the lord of Mordor, has returned to his black tower Barad-dûr. From now on he attacks Gondor again. Normally, Gondor gets help from Rohan but this time Rohan is under attack by Sauron’s helper Saruman. Sauron gets also help of the wicked men from Rhûn, Harad and the city of the Corsairs of Umbar.

Main Characters

Aragorn, or Strider is the only heir on the throne of Gondor. He left a long time ago. He is afraid to go back to his country because he has the same blood as one of his ancestors, who almost caused the return of Sauron. Aragorn is the only hope for the people of Middle-Earth.

Legolas, is an elf and the prince of Mirkwood. Together with Gimli he has a competition about who kills the most enemies.
Gimli, the son of Gloin is a dwarf. He is one of the most important dwarves because he is a member of the council of Elrond. He lives in Erebor, a huge mountain where his grandfather lived. The dwarves were defeated by the dragon Smaug. About sixty years ago the fellowship of fourteen dwarves and the hobbit Bilbo defeated Smaug.
Frodo Baggins, a hobbit from the Shire, a landscape with many green hills and ponds. He is Bilbo’s nephew. He always dreams of adventures. His best friends are Samwise, Meriadoc and Peregrin. When he inherits Bilbo’s magic ring he becomes a Ring bearer and starts his own adventure. He doesn’t like his adventure because is doesn’t work out the way he always wanted it to be.
Samwise Gamgee, a hobbit and the best friend of Frodo. He overhears a conversation between Frodo and the wizard Gandalf. Gandalf finds out that Sam heard everything. By way of punishment Sam has to accompany Frodo on the dangerous trip to the Prancing Pony an inn in Bree.
Meriadoc Brandybuck, a hobbit and best friend of Pippin. Almost everyone calls him Merry. He gets himself in much trouble. His heart is strong and he wants to do everything to help his friends.
Peregrin Took, a hobbit who is called Pippin by everyone. He has lots of humour. When he and Merry are captured by Treebeard, it’s his idea to destroy Isengard.
Boromir, a man of Gondor and the eldest son of the steward. He always wants to use the ring against Sauron, but at the last moments of his life he understands that that should cause the death of the free Peoples of Middle-Earth.
Sauron, the dark lord came to Middle-Earth at the beginning of the first age. He only came to destroy Middle-Earth but made a great mistake by thinking no one would defend themselves
Saruman, the wizard and head of the white council. He fell into darkness when he delved to deep into the study of his enemy’s ways. He’s building up an army of more than 10.000 Uruk-Hais; a mixture of Orcs and goblins
Gandalf, the wizard is a member of the white council and one of the five Istari (´wise’). He always tries to help everyone in the world. Gandalf is also known as Mithrandir (“grey wanderer”). He carries a staff which lights up in the dark and that is also a magic staff. He has been fighting Sauron and his servants for about 2000 years. He bears one of the Elven rings.
Théoden is the king of Rohan; one of the big kingdoms of men. His decisions are sometimes a little bit the decisions of a coward. He always tries to flee for the war and when he can’t flee anymore he pulls back in the big fortress of Rohan: Helms Deep. This fortress has a big wall of massive stone with one little place where water can leave the fortress. This hole is the reason that Rohan almost falls.
Eómer is the prince of Rohan. He is banished for saying to the king that there is war coming.
He has 2000 loyal men riding with him through Rohan and killing all the Uruk-Hai they meet.
Eówyn is the princess of Rohan and sister of Eómer. She’s in love with Aragorn but he doesn’t love her. She isn’t afraid of anything but she’s very afraid of staying at home till all chances of valour are gone, because she is not allowed to go to war.
Faramir is a captain of Gondor. He really wants to show his father his qualities. His father believes that only his brother Boromir has the quality to defend the free peoples of Middle Earth.
Treebeard is the leader of the Ents of Fangorn. He likes to walk in the forest. He must take care of Merry and Pippin. When they come close to Isengard he sees that all the trees have been cut down. He is very frustrated about it and launches an attack on Isengard.
The mouth of Sauron is the messenger of Sauron. He tells the free peoples what they must do to get peace with Sauron.
The Nazgûl are ringwraiths. They used to be ancient kings. When Sauron gave all nine rings of power they became his slaves. They are always chasing the ring. They are terrifying when they get close to you.
Denethor is the steward of Gondor. He sees Sauron’s plans in the Palantir but he does not interfere because his army is much smaller than Sauron’s.
Bilbo is also a hobbit of the sleepy Shire. He bore the ring during sixty years and did not get older during this period. When he inherited the ring to Frodo his body aged quickly.
Elrond is king of Rivendell and one of the three leaders of the elves. He wants friendship between all the free peoples. He sends the elves one group after the other to the Grey Havens where they can sail to the Undying Lands. Together with Gandalf and Galadriel he bears one of the Elven Rings.
Lurtz is the Leader of the Uruk-Hai. He is the first of Saruman’s men. He kills Boromir in Amon Hen.
Galadriel is the queen of the Elves of Lórien and bears an Elven Ring. If you really want something like reinforcement or help she can read your mind.
Celeborn is the husband of Galadriel and king of Lórien. He always welcomes visitors to his magic forest. He is afraid that he can’t defend Lórien against evil forces like those of Sauron and Saruman. When war comes to Rohan he sends reinforcements. Thanks to this Rohan survives the big attack of Saruman.
Arwen is the daughter of Elrond and princess of Rivendell. She is in love with Aragorn and gives him her Evenstar, a jewel that gives her immortality and can protect him. She doesn’t go to the Grey Havens like her father wants, because she has still hope and doesn’t want to lose Aragorn.
Haldir is the protector of Lórien. He is a good friend of Aragorn and the fellowship. He leads the army of the elves in Helms Deep but he dies there.
Wormtongue is a servant and spy of Saruman. He is in love with Eówyn but she hates him.
He pretends he’s an advisor of king Théoden but because of him Saruman can bewitch Théoden. He tries to let the king do nothing against the marching army of Saruman.
Summary

The Fellowship of the Ring
This story consists of two books. In these books a group of travellers, the fellowship starts a journey to destroy the one Ring.

Book I - The Ring sets out
The story begins when Bilbo Baggins is preparing a huge party because of his 111th birthday.
On that day one of his old friends, Gandalf the Grey arrives in the shire a landscape with many green hills, rippling rivers and calm, restful forests. Bilbo tells Gandalf that he’s going to leave the shire to see hills, mountains, rivers and many other things he has seen on his last journey to the lonely mountain. On the party there are lots of fireworks that Gandalf brought with him. When he starts his speech he says that he has been there long enough and that he’s going to leave. On that moment he puts his ring on and disappears. Everyone is very shocked also Gandalf. So Gandalf runs to Bag End and arrives sooner than Bilbo. He says that it’s irresponsible to use a magical ring so lightly. Bilbo understands it and says to be sorry. He let the ring to Frodo his cousin and left Bag End. When Frodo arrives at Bag End Gandalf tells him many things about the ring. Like that the ring was made by Sauron and if Sauron reclaims him, he shall bind the hole of middle-earth in darkness.
When Frodo decides to leave the shire, Merry goes with Frodo’s good friend Fredegar Bolger earlier with the furniture to Buckland where Frodo says he’s going to live. Some days later Frodo goes with Sam and Pippin the same route. On there way they meet a group of Elves and they notice for the first time things of Sauron’s Nazgûl, the ringwraiths who always feel the ring and look for him. The Nazgûl are disguised as Black Riders but every time the hobbits can escape. Then there comes a moment they must decide if they take the long way along the road or the short way along the fields of farmer Maggot. They choose the short way and go to farmer Maggot’s farm where they get food and a whole basket filled with mushrooms for Frodo. Farmer Maggot brings the hobbits to the Bucklebury ferry. There Merry waits for them and he goes with them when they row in to Buckland. Then they move very quickly to Frodo’s new house in Crickhollow. They tell Frodo about the conspiracy from Sam, Merry, Pippin and Fredegar against him. They also tell him that they know about the Ring and his intentions to bring the Ring to Rivendell. Frodo is very surprised that they know these things.
That evening Frodo decides to go with Sam, Merry and Pippin to Rivendell like Gandalf told him to.
They move into the Old Forest where they get lost. At a certain moment they take a rest at the Whithywindle riverside. There willow trees try to squeeze them. They get help from Tom Bombadil an old man with the power to let trees do what he wants. Tom brings them to his house where his wife Goldberry, the daughter of the River, prepares a meal for them. After dinner they have a long talk with Tom about many things, including the Ring. The next day they leave and ride along the river, on pony’s Tom gave them, towards the Barrow downs, a misty place with many hills where the old kings have been buried. After a while a Barrow-Wight catches them. He wants to kill them. Tom comes to save them and brings back their ponies. They thank Tom and hurry to Bree. There they enter the Prancing Pony, an inn where they take a rest. Actually they wanted to wait over there because Gandalf should meet them again over there.
At the Prancing Pony Frodo is pushed in a way that falling down the Ring comes on his finger and makes him disappear. When Frodo puts the ring of Strider catches him and takes him to his room. Sam, Merry and Pippin try to save him from Strider because they think he wants the Ring. That night the Nazgûl enter the room of the Hobbits and push their swords into the beds. When they take away the blankets they find out that there are only blankets and cushions. The Hobbits were sleeping in Strider’s room on the first floor. Strider tells them that the Nazgûl are Sauron’s servants who used to be kings of men and that because they took the Rings they became Sauron’s slaves. The next morning Strider takes the Hobbits on the way to Rivendell. They arrive at Weathertop a hill that used to be a watchtower of the men who lived there hundreds of years ago. Over there they are being attacked by the Nazgûl at the moment Strider is scouting the area. Frodo is afraid. When a Nazgûl is coming towards him with a big sword, he puts the Ring on his finger and he sees five tall figures looking like kings. One of them the Witch-king stabs him with a knife in his left shoulder. In a last effort he takes the Ring of his finger. When he appears his friends are standing around him and Strider is fighting the Nazgûl. Already that night they flee towards the river Mitheithel.
They flee further to the river Ford. Crossing this river brings them into the dominions of Rivendell. There they get help from Glorfindel, the protector of Rivendell he gives his horse to Frodo. Frodo doesn’t want to leave his friends behind but when the Nazgûl attack them, Glorfindel shouts something Elfish to his horse and the horse starts to run with Frodo on his back. The Nazgûl follow him but the horse is faster. When he passes the second arm of the river Ford the horse stops. The Nazgûl ride into the river when a huge wave flushes them away. Frodo falls from his horse. When he awakes he is in Rivendell.
Book II - The Ring goes South
When Frodo awakes he’s in Rivendell. Next to his bed sits Gandalf. Gandalf tells him he has been a prisoner. Frodo is fully awake. So he gets up and visits the banquet that was given on his behalf. At the banquet he meets the dwarf Gloin, who tells him how things are going at the Lonely Mountain and that Balin, Ori and Óin have left the Lonely Mountain to go to Moria. That evening he also meets Elrond, Arwen and Bilbo. Frodo goes with Bilbo to the latter’s room. There they have a long talk about many things. At the end of the conversation Sam comes in and says that Frodo must go to bed because there is council the next day. At the council are many Elves, some Dwarves and Men. Gandalf, Bilbo and Frodo are there also. They are there to decide what has to been with the Ring. They decide to form a fellowship which will set out to destroy the Ring. The company of the Ring had to have nine Walkers to be set against the nine Riders that are evil. Frodo will be ring-bearer. Merry, Pippin and Sam are the other Hobbits in the fellowship. There are five other members. Gandalf will be the guide. Legolas and Gimli join because they do not want the other to have the Ring and they want to have their own people to participate in the fellowship. Aragorn will be the second guide. Boromir makes the fellowship complete.
The hobbits stayed two months in Rivendell. When they leave they go to the south to take the Gap of Rohan but some days later they are being spied upon by Crebain of Dunland, a sort of black crows working for Saruman. On that moment they chose to take the pass over the mountain Caradhras. It is January and there is much snow. Halfway Saruman tries to bring down the mountain. They pull back and Gandalf gives them a mouthful of miruvor, from a leather basket given to him by Elrond. When they have pulled back they are attacked by Wargs, a kind of wolves that are also under the influence of Saruman. The Wargs are defeated. They decide to go to Moria because the mountain has defeated them.
On their arrival they notice that the dwarves of Moria have been attacked by Goblins. They head for the mines. Passing the door of Durin they are being attack by the guardian of the water, which has many tentacles and tries to grab them. All escape hurrying through the mines. This takes several days. On one of these days they find the tomb of Balin in a room. In that room they have to face a huge attack by Goblins. The Goblins have a cave troll that almost kills Frodo. When they have defeated all the Goblins and the cave troll they run to Frodo. They are surprised to notice that he is alive. He survived because Bilbo gave him mithril, elfish for true silver that is stronger than dragon-scales. They fear another attack of the Goblins. So they run to the bridge of Khazad-dûm. On the bridge they meet their greatest enemy the Balrog, a demon of the ancient world. Gandalf tells Aragorn to lead the Fellowship because he has to fight the Balrog. Gandalf stands still and says ‘You cannot pass’. He throws his enemy from the bridge and its shadow plunged down and vanished. His last whiplash curled around Gandalf’s knees and pulls him into the deep.
They leave the mines and run to Lothlórien where its protector Haldir captures them. He brings the fellowship to Caras Galadhon where dwell Lord Celeborn and lady Galadriel. One night Frodo wakes up and sees Galadriel walk by. He follows her to a magical mirror. There Galadriel let him look into the mirror. He sees many things that will happen should he fail his quest. Some days later the fellowship is called by Celeborn. He asks them what they want for their journey. Aragorn tells him that they need boats to go down the river Anduin heading south. On the day of their departure Galadriel and Celeborn give them gifts. Legolas gets a bow and arrows, Aragorn gets a sheath made to fit his sword with the name Andúril in Elven runes, Boromir gets a belt of gold, Merry and Pippin get small silver belt with clasps wrought like a golden flower, Sam gets a wooden box with earth from Galadriel’s orchard. Gimli may choose what he wants. He wants a single strand of Galadriel’s hair. For Frodo she held up a small crystal phial where in the light of Eärendil’s star had been caught. All had been given Elven cloaks with golden leave-shaped broaches. The cloaks can make them invisible for enemy eyes.
The fellowship gets into the boats and row for several days on the great river Anduin. They can escape from all enemies they meet. One night they take a rest at the lawn of Parth Galen next to the hills of Amon Hen. The next morning Frodo and Boromir seek wood for the fire. Boromir gets crazy because he wants the Rings to save his people by bringing the Ring to Minas Tirith. He argues with Frodo because Frodo wants to move on to Mordor. Boromir tries to get the Ring by force. But Frodo puts the Ring on his finger and escapes. Boromir understands what he has done and returns the boats. He tells Aragorn what has happened and the fellowships panics. The Hobbits run towards forest on the hills and Gimli and Legolas run another way. Aragorn tells Boromir to go with Merry and Pippin. He catches up with Sam and tells him that they must go uphill to the throne of Amon Hen. Aragorn runs to fast and disappears. Sam stays behind knowing that Frodo has to return to the boats in order to cross the river. When he gets to the boats he sees an empty boat getting into the river. He runs after it but he can’t swim so he almost drowns. Frodo helps him into the boat and pulls the ring off. So Frodo and Sam set off on the last stage of the Quest together.
My opinion

I enjoyed reading all the books because they gave me a lot of fun. They are full of humour, fantasy, sadness and happiness. Some things are being told without a proper end.

ey gast
