Analysis

Undertitle: ‘A novel of the riftwar cycle’

Author: Raymond E. Feist
Genre: Fantasy, Fiction, Dark Ages.
Release Date: 1992
Serie: This is the second book of the riftwar cycle. This story is set 10 years after the first book, ‘Prince of the Blood’
Pages: 623
Kind of Storytelling:

The story is told by an all-knowing storyteller. You don’t see the story from Nicholas’ or some other’s eyes, but someone who doesn’t take part in the story.

Time/ Settings of the Story:

This is a fantasy/fiction story, so there’s no real time connected to it, but you can notice for by example the clothing, weapons and vehicles that this story took place in the dark
ages.

Main figures:

- Ghuda Bulé: a sixty year old mercenary, he also played a part in the first book, he helped Prince Arutha’s first son, Borric, on his quest.

- Nakor, the Blue Rider: He is a mysterious man, alive for ages. He is a great magician, but he claims it isn’t magic what he does, just ‘tricks’. He has a theory that the universe is built out of very minuscule parts, that he calls ‘stuff’.
- Nicolas conDoin: he is the third son of the prince Arutha, and the main figure of this story. He is a skilled swordsman. He has one damaged left foot, so he limps.
- Harry from Ludland: Nicolas’ squire and best friend.
- Marcus: the son of martin, duke of the city Crydee. He is skilled with the longbow. Determined to recapture his sister and lover, Margaret and Abigail.
- Amos: Admiral of the Royal Fleet and fiancé to Nicolas’ grandmother.
- Calis: he lives in Elvendar. His mother is queen of the elves, his father is human, and a great magician. He is also skilled with the longbow. Because of being of the elvenkind, he has much better senses than normal humans.
- Brisa: a street girl who was found by the company in Freeport.
- Anthony: a magician at the court of Crydee.
- Margaret: Marcus’ Sister, she has been abducted from castle Crydee.
- Abigail: Margaret’s best friend, she has also been abducted.
Essay:

Nicholas, third son of Prince Arutha of Krondor, is to be sent to Crydee, to serve at his Uncle’s Court as a Squire. He gets help from Nakor and Ghuda. Nakor had that strange feeling again, like he had when he needed to help Borric, in the first book. He found Ghuda at his home and together they departed to Krondor, to meet with the young Prince.

Together with Harry, his Squire, Nakor, Ghuda, and Amos they are bound for Crydee. It is a long journey, which they make by Amos’ ship. Before they go to Crydee, they want to pay a visit to Sorceress’ Island, to meet Pug, an adopted brother of his Father. Pug is a great magician, who knows very much ‘tricks’. He gives Nicholas a magic amulet, which he can summon Pug with if he rubs the amulet and calls his name three times They spent a few nights at Sorceress’ Island, and the last night they saw something remarkable. There was a beautiful young naked lady walking down the courtyard, when suddenly light came shining from her body. Then she turned into a golden dragon and flew away.

After their visit to Sorceress Island, they departed by ship to Crydee. This is going to be Amos’ last journey, because he’s about sixty years old. He wants to retire and marry Nicholas’ grandmother. Arriving at Court Crydee, all the party members are introduced and assigned to their tasks. Nicholas is to Squire for his Uncle, Duke Martin. Harry is to Squire for his son, Marcus. There they meet the two girls, Marcus sister Margaret, and Abigail, Margaret’s friend and an extraordinary beautiful girl. For Nicholas its love at first sight. Harry has a crush on Margaret. Marcus on the other hand can’t stand Nicholas, maybe because of jealousy because he is also in love with Abigail.

After a few days at Castle Crydee, Duke Martin, Marcus, Nakor, Ghuda, Harry and Nicholas go on a hunting trip in the morning. By the evening they see fire lighting the sky. It’s the castle.

When they arrive at the castle by night they can witness the remaining parts of the burned-out castle, together with the bodies of a couple of hundreds inhabitants of the castle. The Duke’s wife has also been killed. Many people are missing, Margaret and Abigail are among them. After a few days they got messages from the other cities that they had also been raided. When Amos arrived by ship they are planning to recapture the prisoners, but they have no idea how. Then Nicholas uses the amulet. When Pug appeared behind the inn they saw that a bright red light was coming from the sky, which hit Pug on the chest. Pug was now captured by a powerful spell. After a few hours he is released from the magic barrier and tells the party that he has been looking for Margaret and Abigail, and found them in the area of Freeport in the Straits of Darkness, in a long and dark building.

Before they bound to leave Crydee, Pug wants to try to heal Nicholas’ limping foot. Together with Nakor Pug tries to make Nicholas understand he must do it himself, all by pure will. If Nicholas doesn’t really believe in himself the trick won’t work.

Because Duke Martin had an accident, he couldn’t join the rescue party. He had a long and serious talk with Nicholas the night before they departed. He showed him a ring with two serpents along it. It was a ring of a Pathatian Serpent Priest, a dead cult who want to whipe out the entire human and elven rage to resurrect their Goddess.

Then they set sail for Freeport, but offcourse they can’t come in like a royal ship, they would kill the prisoners if they do, so they disguise as buccaneers (pirates). Pug told Anthony to wear the amulet. Anthony is in love with Margaret, so he had a special bond with her, if he used a specific magic spell he could locate her. Anthony acted as their navigator.

To reveal the secrets of Freeport, Amos and his men had to infiltrate the streets of Freeport and gather information without drawing any attention. But they are lucky, because the sheriff of Freeport is an old ‘friend’ of Amos’ in the time he was a pirate. In the ‘council of bosses’ of Freeport they found Render, the man who was identified by a couple of survivors from the raid. When Nicholas, Amos, and Ghuda are trying to irritate Render so he would make a stupid move, Harry, Calis and Marcus are gathering information about the captives. Then they found Brisa, who told them she had information about a huge black ship on a small island, and on that island is a warehouse. At night they want to investigate. When they looked inside the warehouse they saw a dozen of bodies scattered around the floor, including the bodies of six Durban slayers, Render’ men. When they want to set sail to chase the black ship, Render is accused of the raid of the Far Coast. As revenge, Render wants a duel with Nicholas, what is his right here in Freeport. Render will be Nicholas’ first kill.

With Anthony working as the navigator, Amos as a real deal Pirate captain, Nakor as a ‘spellcaster’ and Ghuda, a rough mercenary to train the men, this ship could be called well prepared. What non-of them know, is that they are leaving the world of Midkemia and that they’re sailing to another continent called Novinous. After months of pursuing the black ship, they notice the ship is setting sail to harbour, but all of a sudden the Raptor (Amos’ ship Raptor is a disguise name for the Royal Eagle) is making strange movements and noises, they have been trapped in a very powerful spell. Anthony tries to break the spell, but he hasn’t tried it before. Therefor it didn’t work, and Anthony caused two large tsunami’s to wreck the ship. The first wasn’t so huge, but with the second the ship collapsed and everybody had to swim for their lives. At the regrouping at the beach they counted 53 men, 147 others were lost.

With this unlucky thing to happen, their journey is just about to begin. First of all they are landed at the beach, what is surrounded by high rocks. Calis, Marcus and Nicholas make the first climb to tie a rope around something above. When Marcus is about to fall, Nicholas takes his foot and pushes him upwards, ignoring the stabbing pain in his left foot, the pain he is only making up. The relationship between Nicholas and Marcus has become better now, they aren’t going to fight anymore, but let Abigail decide as they see her again.

After the climb they see some goats with a tattoo in their ears, grazing by an oasis. They eat the goats, drink from he oasis and regain their strength before they want to cross the desert, because they had to left about a half dozen men behind who where to ill to climb. After a couple of days and a couple of deaths later, Calis was the first one who spotted some birds in the sky. Their last hope. Calis turned out to be right and again the men had the chance to regain their strength as the desert slowly turns over being grassland, there they find a deserted, burned down caravan band.

As they search the area they found about thirty bodies, some weapons and a small man, named Tuka. Strange as it is, he speaks the Keshian tongue. He tells the band that he was delivering fine goods, and his fiancée to the Overlord. The Overlord is the supreme ruler of the city of the Serpent River, the only City in the vast area. Nicholas has a plan to recapture the Overlord’s wagons and the Ranjana, the Overlord’s fiancée, and gain his trust, because he thinks it has been done by very foolish bandits, or on the other hand amateurs. They find the band of brigands a few miles later and they were easily overtaken, without no one guarding the wagons, and most of the man drunk, the raid was over before most of the men knew they were raided. Al of a sudden they see a bunch of horseman standing on the surrounding hilltops, the Jeshandi.

The Jeshandi are in control of the lands between the city of the Serpent River and Shingazi’s Landing, an inn owned by a man named Shingazi. As Nicholas makes a sign of peace, now that he is the captain the band, the Jeshandi turns out to be reasonable men, who only want to talk with these strange fellows about the payment of their goats. Nicholas agrees, and goes together with Harry, Ghuda, Nakor, Marcus, Amos and Anthony to the Hetman’s Yurt (the Jeshani captain’s hut). As the captain removed his cap, small pointy ears came visible. He turned out to be one of the Edhel, the elves, but he is unfamiliar with that word. After they paid for the goats, bought some weapons and armoury they got something to eat and drink. After that they went on the road again.

It is a long way to the city of the Serpent River, the best way is to catch a boat, only to be found at Shingazi’s Landing. Arriving at SL Nicholas’ company spotted 12 man-at-arms lying on top the hill near the inn. These are no amateurs but well trained soldiers, probably waiting for the ones who captured the wagons arriving with the Ranjana. Nakor comes up with a plan, he wants to make a small fire in the cellar of the inn and shout ‘FIRE’! so everybody would run outside and they could catch the longboats waiting on the dock unseen. But all of a sudden the inn is burning and soldiers are killing everybody coming in their range. When the soldiers are gone Nicholas’ company wants to investigate the burned out ruins of the inn. They discover the body of a Red Slayer, to be sad one of the Overlords private guards. How can the Overlord order this attack, if he wants his fiancée back alive, could it be a set-up? Inside the inn they found a treasure chest full of gold and jewels, next to the body of Shingazi. Outside they found a survivor named Vaji, his friend Praji seemed to be alive to. After a chitchat they told Nicholas about what happened and joined his party for revenge against the Overlord. To draw no further attention they took the boat and headed for the city of the Serpent River.

Arriving at the City of the Serpent River they could see the Black ship lying at the dock. Nicholas ordered Nakor and Anthony to go shopping for medicines and other equipment they might need. Harry and Marcus are bound for inspecting the city. Nicholas himself is going to look for an inn where they could stay and eventually recruit new mercenaries. When Harry and Calis came back they had astonishing news. They saw the Royal Gull and the Royal Eagle lying on the dock. Two Kingdom ships that’ll both sank, on an unknown continent. Nicholas plans to steal one of these ships as soon as they recaptured the prisoners. Nakor never came back from shopping with Anthony.

The next evening Callis is trying to find out more about Dahakon’s estate. A large building that supposed to be the place where the Overlord and his strange and dangerous magic-using adviser take shelter. Vaji has told stories about Dahakon. He is the only one on the continent who’s allowed using magic. He even practise the darkest kind of magic; Necromancy. People say he has been alive for ages and the true ruler of the city of the Serpent River. But Calis isn’t a normal human either, being of the Edhel, he has great advantages, especially by venturing at night. At a long night search he found the prisoners, most of them dead, some of them seriously ill. But he also sees strange creatures hanging around the prisoners, it seems to be serpents, but they seem to turn into the prisoners. These creatures are created to make copies of the prisoners! Still, Abigail and Margaret are not to be found amongst the prisoners.

At the same time Nakor has also infiltrated Dahakon’s estate. He found a pathway by a burned out farm near to Dahakon’s estate, leading directly inside Dahakon’s Palace. There he found Dahakon sitting on a chair in a deep trance. Probably looking for a sign of Pug. But Nakor is following the black haired lady he saw a glimp of, so has no time to either steal Dahakon’s books or fight him. In that room he found a strange lens which you can spot ‘magic’ presence with. He slit Dahakon’s throat and continued his way to find the girl. After a while Callis has also found the girls, but he sees two Margarets and two Abigails, something really strange is going on here!

When everybody came back to the inn to discuss the last action to save the prisoners, Praji was told to find the trustworthiest men he could find to hire as mercenaries. Harry, Brisa and Marcus are in charge of the riverboats near the burned out farm of Dahakon’s estate. Callis is to lead the infiltration/attack on the estate. Amos and Nicholas are in charge of capturing one of the ships to sail home with.

With only a small company the group succeeded in recapturing the prisoners. Maggy and Abby escaped by themselves as they saw that those creatures that took over their looks had disappeared. Calis found them running down the courtyard. The attackers set the place on fire when they left, drawing the attention of the near by guards. Maybe a bad idea? On the trip down the river they where pursued by a boat full of armed crossbowmen, but they had to shoot at close range. They where no match for Calis’ and Marcus’ longbows. As they killed two men, the persuaders returned at open sea for reinforcements.

Amos was unluckily enough hit in the stomach with a sword, so he couldn’t captain the ship. As the company almost caught the ship The Royal Eagle, they saw a gigantic ship approaching from behind the cliffs. It turned out to be the overlords private war galley. They had an agreement with the mercenaries and boat drivers that they would be put ashore as soon as the mission was completed, but with this gigantic ship approaching, there’s no time to waste. Luckily everybody is aboard, Nicholas, Harry, Marcus, Calis, Ghuda, Nakor, Anthony, Brisa, Margaret, Abigail, Tuka, Vaji, Praji, the Ranjana, a couple of dozen mercenaries and boat drivers, all the surviving prisoners from Crydee and also all the copies made by the dark magic of Dahakon, and offcourse the captain himself, Amos, who has given his command to Nicholas. When all stories came together they discovered the purpose of those copies made by Dahakon. They carry a very infectious and deadly virus, made by Dahakon. He wants to clear the continent of Midkemia of human presence to forfill the Patathian Serpent Priests’ dark prophecy. By making copies of nobles instead of bringing it by shore by strangers will result that the king and his followers will be the first to die, that’ll make huge mass confusion, and besides it will be to late for the king to get any (magical) help.

After a few days they can’t see the pursuing war galley anymore. They make an offer to the mercenaries to stay aboard and go back to their continent; Midkemia. Others who wont will be put ashore together with some gold of Shingazi’s landing, to go back to their family and own continent; Novinous.

After the men had been set ashore, they could see an other ship approaching; it was the Royal Gull. This was probably a faster ship than the war galley. After months of chasing the Royal Eagle reaches the Straits of Darkness, there is where the battle will take place. They dumped the infested copies in the sea, but they spotted some other copies, including the copies of Margaret and Abigail, on the Royal Gull. It has to be illuminated!

As the two ships came very close, Nicholas ordered his crew to enter and burn down the ship. They succeeded without burning themselves, but is cost them the lives of a dozen men, including Ghuda Bulé.

If they thought it was over they where dead wrong. Suddenly the Overlord’s War Galley reappeared. Nakor said it was a trick again, to make them invisible for their eyes. Not knowing what to do without anymore oil to burn and skilful man to fight, Nakor commands Anthony to use the amulet again.

By using the amulet, a golden dragon suddenly appeared, setting the intire war galley into flames. Except for Dahakon, while he’s using a protective magic barrier. Calis shoots an arrow to distract him, but it bumped of, as well as the second. Nakor broke the iron head of the arrow of and let Calis shoot again. This time the barrier broke and Dahakon was burned alive.

After almost a year of travelling, our friends reach the harbour of Krondor again, to inform the king about the threat of the Pathatian Serpent Priests. Amos is to wed Nicholas’ grandmother, Harry is to wed Brisa. Marcus and Abigail are in love. As well as Nicholas and his extraordinary beautiful ‘captive’, the Ranjana.

hey!

the king's buccaneer isn't the second book of the riftwar series. it's the second of two books between the riftwar series and the serpent saga. the riftwar serie exists of: magician, silverthorn and a darkness at sethanon. then come prince of the blood and after that the king's buccaneer. personally I do see them as part of the riftwar saga but they play many years after it, while the three books of the riftwar saga are one part. the characters are the same, except for those who have died of course. for the rest it's a good work.
