Tom Jones by Henry Fielding

Main-character: Tom Jones
Other characters: Sophia Wetern, Black George, Squire Western, Tomas Allworthy, Patridge, Blifil, Lady Bellaston.

Chapter 1.
Tom Jones named after Thomas Allworthy and his mother Jenny Jones. Miss Bridget sister of Thomas. Thomas family died before the story began.

Mr. Allworthy, a man of the law, returned from London, spent 4 months on important business. When he came home he was tired so he went upstairs to sleep ,but found a baby. Miss Bridget tried to find his mother Jenny, though poor, very clever, had taught her Latin and Greek, she is Miss’s maid. She confessed that it is her son, but would not tell him the baby’s father name. Miss Bridget married to Cptn. Blifil. Blifil tried to find a way so that Thomas would dislike Tom; feared the squire would spend his money on Tom instead of leaving it for the Blifil family, when he dies. Patridge, the schoolmaster, was blamed by Blifil that Tom was his son. His wife became mad and told everybody. Blifil made sure that Thomas heard it. Patridge’s wife died after and he left the part country. Thomas still wanted the boy.
Captain Blifil fell down the stairs and was dead.

Chapter 2.
Tom was now 14 years old. Tom may seem rather naughty when compared with Master Blifil. Tom had a friend , the gamekeeper  employed by a landowner to prevent animals from being hunted, except by himself. Black George shot the bird and hid himself, because it was Tom’s fault that he shot that bird. Tom got punished by Thwakum, until he tells the truth. Tom suddenly told the truth to Blifil and he made fun of Tom having no parents and no money. Tom broke his nose , but told the truth to Thwakum about Black George and told that Tom was lying about him making fun of Tom’s parents. Tom got a horse from Mr. Allworthy ,but sold it so that he could use the money to help George( he lost his job). Blifil came with evidence that B.G has stolen rabbits. Tom decided to ask Sophia for help. She was the Squire Western daughter.

Chapter 3.
Tom tried to save Sophia’s bird and almost broke his neck. As for Sophia, she liked Tom and distrusted Blifil. Sophia is at the same age as Tom. She is now 18. She and Tom felt in love without realizing it. Tom ask Sophia to ask her father if he needed a gamekeeper and so Black G.eorge got a job. Tom didn’t love Sophia yet, but another woman.
Her name is Molly.
Tom liked Molly,but soon he discovered that Molly liked somebody else. That person was Square’s . Supple told Sophia about Molly and Tom, she became upset.

Chapter 4.
Tom begged Mr. Allworthy not to blame Molly, but blame him instead. It was his fault who gave her an idea above her station. Sophia and Mr Western went hunting, when they got back her horse suddenly became mad. She fell, but luckilly Tom came just in time to catch her and broke his arm. Later she asked her father to sent a docter to heal him. Honour said: that Tom kissed Sophia’s muff, and became very happy, but it was not true. She wanted her to like him, she knew that they both loved each other.

Chapter 5.
Sophia often came to visite Tom and played her harpsichord (like a piano) for Tom to hear. Mr. Western wanted to give to Tom, the horse she rode on. Tom refused. Tom noticed that he and she began to love each other, but he knew that both fathers would not agree. Tom loved Molly and Sophia. One day Tom heard about Molly’s illness.
This is how Tom discovered how Molly didn’t love him ,but someone else. He wanted to buy a gift for Molly to make her happy and went to ‘Seagrims cottage’ ,her house, to give her that present and saw Square’s hand was held by Molly. Tom felt happy about it. He must now find a way to let both father accept their marrige.
Tom and Sophia both appoligized that they’ve them both love each other. They both understood their duty.

Chapter 6.
Mr .Allworthy had been ill for somedays with a cold and it has grown worse. He asked for his families: Tom, Thwalkun and Square and Blifil. The servents stood aroud the bed also. Mr. Allworthy gave: Blifil 500 pounds a year, but this would return to him when she dies. Mr Jones 500 pounds a year and 1000 now. Tom cried and said that Mr. All. Was a good friend and father to him. Thwalkum got 1000 and Mr. Square also. All the servents got a little aswell. A lawyer suddenly showed up downstairs. Blifil went to see him and heard that his mother has just died during the journey back from London. The docter told Blifil that Mr. Allworthy is no longer in danger so that Blifil could tell Mr. Allworthy about the bad news. Tom went outside to get some fresh air, untill Molly suddenly showed up, she was forbidden to enter from Mr. Allworthy. They both were talking until, Blifil and Thwalkum discovered Tom talking to a girl.
They quiickly ran towards them, Tom who heared , told Molly. Tom tried to stop them both and began a fight. Blifil was attacked by Tom first and Thwalkum was a champion boxer , but Tom stood up his attacks, Mr. Western was talking and saw them and stopped the fight. Sophia who came to see fainted, because of the bllod on Tom. Tom quickly rushed to save her and brought her to a nearby stream to wash her face. Mr. Western invited him to dine with Mr. Western.

Chapter 7.
Sophia’s aunt thought that Sophia loved Blifil, so she told Mr. Western. Mr. Western went to Mr. Allworthy to have a talk with him and both agreed to let Blifil and Sophia dine together. When Sophia told her aunt about the misunderstanding and about Tom, she insisted her to marry Blifil or she would tell her father. Sophia tried to explain to her father that she didn’t like Blifil and about Tom, her father became so mad that she slapped her. Tom ,who has just arrived, helped her up and asked her what had happened. Sophia swore to Tom that she would never marry Blifil unless she was forced. After that she fainted. Tom tried his best to calm Mr. Western.

Chapter 8+9.
Mr. Allworthy told Tom to leave the house when he found out about the fight with Blifil and Thwalkum and that Sophia loved him. He gave Tom 500pound. Tom went away and was mad threw all the papers away. All he wanted was to wright a letter for Sophia. When he was finished he wanted to find the lost papers and met Black George. He asked him to help him find his lost papers. George found it and saw 500 pound, but didn’t told Tom about it. In the end he asks George to deliver the message to her.
Sophia wrote a message also and gave it to Honour to deliver it to George, so he could give Tom the letter. Sophia gave Tom her last savings, about 16 pounds. George saw it and wanted to take it too, but was afraid that Tom would notice. Sophia decided to run away and go to London with Honour.

Chapter 10 + 11.
Tom went on his way, he hired a guide and a horse. He stopped at a nearest port. They he got wounded by a soldier. The Lieutenet called for a doctor. The doctor helped him until, the maid found out about Tom that he was pour and told the doctor. There he met a barber, Patridge, disguised as Benjamin. Together with Patridge they travelled from Gloucester to Worcester. Patridge told the whole (real) story.

Chapter 12.
They lost their way and found a house to stay for the night. At dawn Tom wanted to climb up the hill. The old man, who Tom saved from robbers, wanted to go with him when they saw Notherton attacking a lady (Mrs. Waters) and asved her. Later Tom traveled to Upton. The lady couldn’t go in the Inn, because the landlady told that she was a begger, but when landlady wanted to hit Tom ,Patridge came to hear all the noise, a fight broke out. The laddy was a wife of Cptn. Waters. The landlord appoligized and drank beer for peace.

Chapter 13.
A coachman of a young lady whom was running away came to help the landlord who is being attacked by the sergent. He was badly wounded and both stayed for the night.

Chapter 14.
Mr. Fitzpatrick tried to find his wife and thought that Mrs. Waters was his wife, but Tom stopped him. It was somebody else he noticed.
A lady came in, it was Honour and Tom was sleeping.

Chpater 15.
Sophia heard that Tom was going to war and left a muff. Tom woke up and saw the muff and borrowed a horse to chase after her. Mrs waters and fitzpatrick travelled in the coach. Mr Western ,who still haven’t noticed that she was gone and began to call for her daughter. After some time, the maid returned and said that she was gone. Sophia decided to take 20 miles across country before she would take a direkt route. She met the same guide, who guided Tom and told her which way Tom went. She talked to the same people. For Mr. Western too, he also arrived at the inn in Upton.

Chapater 16.
They hadn’t gone far from the inn. She was on her way until she saw a coach that looked liked her father’s. Suddenly she fell from the horse and met Harriet ,who was a cousin of Sophia’s. Harriet begged her to sleep, ecause of the travels during day and night. Harriet told her about Fitzpatrick how he almost used up all her money. Sophia lost all her 100 pounds during the fall. They had no time to go back and went on their way to London.

Chapter 17.
The Quire had no difficulties of following her, they were in Upton, untill she left the mainroads. He didn’t which road to take when suddenly he heard the sound of hunting horns. In a short time , he became friends with the stranger. Tom and Patridge have left the town on foot, because there where no horses.
They both arrived at a cross-road and didn’t know what road to take, but picked one.
Luckily they picked the right one, the same one that Sophia picked. Later they arrived at another cross-road and heard a old man asking them for money. Tom gave him one shilling and the old man gave him the purse. Tom saw 100 pounds. He gave the man another pound to tell him where he found it. Later they arrived at a town, Tom went to rest and Patridge went to watch a puppet show. In the night he heard the fight about a lady. He asked the helper to tell him which way she went and called Patridge.

Chapter 18.
They hadn’t gone far until a storm came. They went to an Inn. A boy came in and Patridge recognize him, he was the guide at Upton of Sophia also. The guide told him the way and they left with horses. They reached the next inn where Sophia stayed. There he met Dawling, the lawyer who brought the message to Mr. Blifil about the death of his mother and told the lawyer how bad Blifil was. When the horses were ready they kept on going untill they were lost and went to an old storehouse. There they stayed until the storm was over. They met a man, who tried to rob him, but Tom took his gun abd gave him some money because his family was ill.

Chapter 19.
They arrived at London. They found the Irish lord’s house. Tom gently asked for Sophia, but the maid didn’t trust them. Later she told them that Sophia had just left when they came, but didn’t tell where. Lady Bellaston heard the story by Harriet. Lady B. Didn’t want Sophia to marry Tom, but wanted to marry him herself. She will find one more important for Sophia. Harriet changed her lodings and house so that Tom couldn’t here from Sophia no more.

Chapter 20.
Tom had often heard Mr allworthy speak of Mrs Miller. She has a house in London and let out rooms, especially for Mr. Allworthy. One day a gentleman was attacked by a thief ,his servant, gentleman’s name was Jack Nightingale. A serveant brought a letter and a parcel to Tom, who is invited to the mask party. So patridge lent him money to hire chair. He asked the lady to take him to Sophia, but instead he was taken to her friends house, Mrs. Bellaston. He didn’t found Sophia. Tom and Jack have been asked to dine with Mrs. Millers and the other guest was 2 hours late. He said he hda no money and his family was very ill and the person that owes his money took all his things. Tom gave him 50 pounds and Mrs. M gave 10 pounds. Tom met Mrs. Bellaston maby times, but she didn’t help him to meet Sophia. She asked Tom to meet her again and Tom went to her house once more, luckily Sophia had an arguiment about a show and wwnt home early, so she met Tom on her way. Tom gave Sophia her purse and left.

Chapter 21.
Tom just reached home when a message arrived from Mrs. Bellaston. : you should not have left. I must meet you again tomorrow. Later another message arrived from Sophia: she fobade him to go to Lady Bellaston’s house again. So Tom sent a reply and told her that he was sick. This way he could keep Sophia’s promise. Mrs. Millers asked him to leave. He told her the whole story, exept about Sophia. He said goodbye to Jack who was leaving. The woman who was going to marry him will soon arrive, he left Nancy in sorrow and pain. He promised to marry Nancy (daughter of Mrs. Millers).
Tom and Jack went to Mr. Nightingale about Nancy, the one that Jack loves.
Honour arrived.

Chapter 22 + 23.
Lord Fellamar often visited Lady Bellaston. He was rich and handsome and began to think that he loved Sophia. Lord Fellamar proposed and asked Mrs. Bellaston if he could propose earlier. Mrs. Bellaston arranged a time where Sophia would be alone. He told her how much he’d loved her and held her in his arms. Sophia screamed, but nobody could hear her. Mr. Wesyern arrived just in time and went inside. Sophia quickly ran to her father. If Parson Supple hadn’t held Mr. Western’s arms he would have hit her. Mrs. Bellaston went to Tom. Tom was talking with Honour, until Mrs bellaston suddenly arrived he pushed her behind the curtain, but later Mrs. Bellaston discoverd her and left. Tom begged Honour not to tell Sophia about this and gave her a few pounds. Jack was dressed like a bridegroom and married Nancy. Tom freed himself from Mrs. Bellaston, by the help of Jack ,he told that she swore never to marry again after her husband died. They were having a great party. A letter arrived and said that Mr. Allworthy was comong to town with Blifil. Mrs. Nightingale agreed to go with Nancy and Jacky to the new house .Patridge arrived and told that Black George had came and was the serveant of Blifil. Blifil didn’t like hunting ,so it was a sad job for Black George.

Chapter 24
Sophia found the letter in the chicken that Black George gave her and Mrs Western arrived. She said to his brother to lock his daughter up. She told Sophia that if she did not agree, Mrs. Fitzpatrick will not be helped.( Harriet Fritzpatrick wishes to geet seperated legaly from her husband and this way wasn’t easy to arrange in those days. She believed she could manage it easily with the heelp of her relation Mr. Western and his Sister. She therefore wrote to them where Sophia was living.)

Chapter 25.
Tom received an answer. Sophia gave her the 100 pound he found and she was free now, but she wishes not to see anyone without her consent. Tom was happy and went to a play. There he met Harriet.
(The way how Mr. Allworthy went to London)Blifil heard about the news, about Harriet’s letter. He wishes to go to London,but Mr. Allworthy heard about the escape of Sophia and knew how much she didn’t like Blifil. Blifil told him how much he liked her. Mr. Allworthy at last said he would take his nephew and try once more. Lady B. Gave the propose letter of Tom to Mrs. Western, so that she could use it to break Sophia heart. Tom went to Harriet, Mr. Fitzpatrick came when Tom was leaving, they both faught with a sword and Mr. Fitzpatrick lost. Lord Fellamar heard of Lady B.that he must be removed. He brought Tom to prison, where the docter swore that Fitzpatrick would die. Patridge found him and gave Sophia’s letter. There she says that she read the propose letter between Tom and Lady Bellaston and wanted to see him never again.

Chapter 26.
Blifil came with the news about Tom Murders and Mr Western was told of Lord Fellamar that he wanted to marry Sophia. Mr. Allworthy said that marrige mustn’t be forced and that he declined the offer. Tom friends went to Tom to explain to him about the fake death of Fitzpatrick and that Sophia wasn’t mad at Tom.

Chapter 27.
Sophia refused to marry Lod Fellamar. Her aunt sent her back to her father. Tom is now free, because Lord F. Discovered that he didn’t kill Fitzpatrick and Mr. Allworthy asked Nightingale to forgive his son Jack. Mrs. Waters is Jenny Jones. Tom’s Mother and his Father was Mr. Summer. His mother is the sister of Mr. Allworthy. Mr. Allworthy found out that Dowling thought that Mr. Allworthy sent Blifil to let Tom hang and that Black George stole Tom’s money. Dowling said that these were other things in the letter that Blifil didn’t mensioned.

Chapter 28.
Mr. Allworthy apouligised to Sophia for the problem that his family has caused her. He told her about Blifil and that Sophia was a wise person not to marry him. Mr. Allworthy asked her if Sophia accept a visit from another relation of him. Sophia answered: I didn’t knew you had another one, but i am willing to meet him, but i cannot think of marrage just now. Mr. Allworthy told her the truth about Tom parents. Mr. Western who was quietly listening in another room rushed inside and said that she shall see him in teatime. When Mr. Allworthy returned he saw Tom talking to Mrs. Millers who told him everything already. Mr. Allworthy apouligised to Tom how soory he was and that it was his own downfall, how he could let Blifil deceive him. Later He told Tom about teatime.

Mr. Allworthy said to him not to forgive and forget too easily . Tom was a good person and told MR. All. to give Blifil some money before he leaves. Mr. All told Tom about Black George and was fired. Patridge gave back the stolen money and helped him to get dressed. For the first time that Tom and Sophia had nothing to say to each other. At last they both told each other that they were sorry and that they would marry each other after 2 or 3 days.
Mr. Western rushed in the room and shouted: 3 days!! It must be tomorrow or the day after !!
George and Blifil went north. Patridge got his old cottage and school back. Mrs Waters married Parson Supple. Jack and Nancy bought a estate near Mr. Western, where Sophia and Tom went to live. Mrs Western quickly forgave Sophia for marrying Tom.
Mr Western spent hours with his grandchilderen and said that their voices were as sweet as the sound of the hunting horn.
Tom learned at last to be wise and thought full as well as generous and gay.
