Leo Colston is reading in his old diary. He’s reading what happened in 1900.
As little child Jenkins and Strode beat him. He was so mad, that in his diary he wrote a curse. The next day, the 2 boys felt of the roof. The whole school thought now that Leo had magic powers.
Marcus Maudsley invites Leo to spend the vacation with him and his family at Brandham Hall. Leo agrees and met there the sister of Marcus, Marian. Leo is in love with Marian.
Mrs. Maudsley, Marian mother’s, wants Marian to marry Lord Trimingham. But there is a little problem, Marian loves Ted Burgess. Ted is a farmer who lives next the Maudsley. Both are having a secret affair. Leo brings the love letters to each other; he is the messenger, the Go-Between. Leo not only brings Marian letters from Ted, but also from Lord Trimingham. Leo realizes that Marian is only kind to him because he’s the only one who could bring her letters to Ted. Leo is so desperate that he wrote a curse in his diary.
The day of his birthday Marian is not at time at home and Mrs. Maudsley asks him where Marian is. Leo lies and tells her that he doesn’t know. Mrs. Maudsley knows that Marian is in love with Ted. She goes getting Marian at Ted’s house. There she finds them together.
There stops the flashback. Leo tells us now, that Ted killed himself after been caught with Marian, and that Marian married Lord Trimingham.
Today Leo goes to Brandham Hall. Marian is happy to see Leo back. She tells him that her 2 brothers, Marcus and Denys, died in the war and that her husband, Lord Trimingham, also died. Leo also met the grandson of Marian and Lord Trimingham. But Marian tells Leo, that her grandson not the grandson is of the Lord, but the grandson of Ted.

V. Characters

Leo Colston:
He’s an insecure little boy; he needs to learn things about love, life… When he realises that Marian is just using him, he feels very hurt. The drama that takes place at Brandham Hall caused him a serious breakdown. He never gets over it.

Marian Maudsley:
She is beautiful, tall, has bright hair and blue eyes. Leo is in love with her. But she is totally in love with Ted, she would do anything for him. She is so in love that she doesn’t realises the pain she does to Leo, by using him.
VI. Narrator

Leo tells us the story of his own childhood, so it’s told in the first person.

VII. Theme

Love, breakdowns of children and their suites

VIII. Genre

A Romance

IX. Appreciation

It was a beautiful book, again a girl’s book. But I love that kind of books, romances … It isn’t difficult. I had pity with Leo, he admired so much Marian that he didn’t saw that she was using him. And the result of this whole story is that he feels very bad, he has breakdowns all his life.
