The Main Characters:

Mariette Larkin – She’s the oldest daughter of the Larkin Family. She had dark hair, dark blue eyes and a perfect young body and is about 23 years old.
Mariette loves horse-riding and walking in the grass without shoes. She easily falls in love with man, but she’s a little bit jealous when another girl tries to take her love from her. In other situations, she’s very cute en kind.

Mr. Charlton – He’s about the age of Mariette. He had blond hair, and light blue eyes. He was very white-faced and wore glasses.
The family calls him Charlie. Charlie worked in a Tax Office. He’s a little bit shy and very unsure of himself, but is also smart and had a good brain.

Summary of the book

This book is going about a very big, but happy family: The Larkin’s. There are six children in the family, and with pop and mom they are with eight people. Mariette, the oldest daughter is going to have a baby. She doesn’t know who the father is, but she wants to find one, quickly!
He dream seems to becoming true, when Mr. Charlton, a young man from the Tax Office comes to the farm for the taxes of the family. He wants to know how much money the family earned. When he sees Mariette, he immediately falls in love with her. Mariette seems to like Mr. Charlton too, but he feels very uncomfortable and shy.
The family invites Mr. Charlton for dinner, and he discovered that the family eats very much food. They are also so busy eating, that Mr. Charlton can’t finish the yellow paper.
Each time when he wants to talk about the yellow paper that afternoon, there is something else that’s more important.
When it’s time to have tea, Mr. Charlton wants to go home. But again, he can’t go home. He decides to stay a little longer, and then he missed his bus home. That night he also drinks a pair of cocktails, and becomes drunk. The next day, pop and mom want him to stay for the next week. They think that he doesn’t look very well. A week on the Larkin farm will help. And he can help on the fields with picking strawberry’s. After a fight between Mariette and Pauline, a girl that likes him too, Mr. Charlton realised that Mariette is in love with him.
The next day he writes a letter to the Tax Office, where he works, telling them that he is sick. But he continues with helping the family with picking strawberry’s. And he starts to like the life on the Larkin farm and his love for Mariette grows too.
When there’s a horse show at the Larkin farm, Mariette rides on her horse, and Mr. Charlton joins the man’s donkey race. The donkey’s are not very clever, and it becomes a hilarius end to the Horse Show.
At the after-party, pop meets a beautiful young stranger. A couple of minutes later, he began to play with the firework, putting them under people. In the commotion, Mr. Charlton ask Mariette to marry him. She said yes. When he ask permission from pop und mom, they said yes too.
Later they discover that Mariette not going to have a baby. She was just a little bit late this month.
The only one who’s going to have a baby, is mom. And she also asked pop to marry her. When Mr. Charlton said that’s not good news for their Taxes, Pop and mom decided not to marry.
At the end, Mr. Charlton doesn’t want to go back to the Tax Office. He’s very happy with his life on the farm. He dicides to stay on the farm.

My opionion: I think this was a very funny book, but also a little bit rare. There are strange accidents in this book, which makes me confused. But is was a good book to read!
