Explanation of the title

“Stupid White Men” is about the stupid white men of the United States of America, for example the great mister Bush himself and all of the people who work for him. Some sentences in Moore’s book are, for example when he named all of the people who are working for Mr. Bush: “These Stupid White Men must be stopped”. And the last few sentences of the book: “ The Bad guys are just a bunch of silly, stupid white men. And there’s a helluva lot more of us then there are of them. Use your Power.” The Title exactly reflects the whole book, cause the subjects are in some ways always related to the power of the Stupid White Men.

When does the story play?

The story plays NOW, not exactly now, cause the book was written last year and in 2001, but it’s still a thing that is also happening now, surely because it’s about Bush and his power and the way he is using it, of course in Michael’s opinion wrong. The things which are spoken about in the book, still are taking place now, for example the warming of the earth, the poisoning of the drinking water, etc.

Where does the story take place?

The story is taking place in Amerika, because the whole book is about all sorts of problems in the USA. Moore is doing many research on the problems he talks about in the book, off course all in the USA.

Main characters

There aren’t really some main characters in this book, because it’s not really about 1 person, but more about a bunch of people, the people who work for the political part of the USA. Of course the main man is Bush, because he is the most “famous” of them and much is related to him or to presidents before him. There are also many parts in which Moore himself is talking about the things he handled with, etc. But I don’t feel like describing Bush and his mates.

Themes

• many problems like:black people versus white people, women, pollution, etc
• bush and his friends
• other political people, Clinton, Nader, etc.
• the hate of Moore against the government of the USA
• the American people
• the impact of the rich and mostly white people of the USA

Summary

1. The first chapter is about the elections and how dear Bush made himself win this contest. It’s about how he made black people and felons disappear of the election list and not just these people, but also people of which their name looked like a name of a black person. It also is about the recounts of the votes and the way George W. Bush affected this. After this Moore talks about Bush and the other people of the USA government, in the way that they are all stupid.

2.The second chapter is a “letter” from Michael to Bush in which he ask him some questions, like “Are you an alcoholic?”, he makes a fool of Bush and act like he’s best friends with him.
3.The third chapter starts with an example about the average amount a starting pilot is getting paid, which is not very much for such a job. Then Moore is going further about the way poor or not rich people have to suffer, affected by the rich people. The rich people just see their agitation going up and the tax down and the not well paid people just see their agitation going down and the tax going up.
4. The fourth chapter is about the problems between white and black people. The way black people always are the one to blame, in the opinion of most of the people. But Moore tells you about the stuff white people do, and always did, which is worser than the stuff black people do. But the point why people think the black ones are the one to blame is because they are always on the new when it comes to crimes, like murder etc. But white people are stealing money for their own business etc, which is harder to find out.
5. This chapter is about the “intelligent” American people. Moore tells that the people aren’t intelligent at all, include the president. He tells about the American school system, which in his opinion isn’t good at all, and the way students could have impact in their school and have a nice time there.
6. The sixth chapter is about the pollution in America. Moore starts the chapter with an example of recycling; Moore discovered there isn’t much recycling at all in the USA, it all comes together at the garbage dump. After this he talks about more problems of pollution in the USA, like: the use of gas and oil, the global warming, the poisoned drinking water, the problems in meat and the mad cow disease.
7. Chapter number seven is about the case that the number of men is decreasing, because the bad stuff that are happening in the world are all their fault, women always did their jobs, men always wanted to be better than everything. There are always men in the government and less women, that’s why it all going wrong, in Moore’s point of view. He also talks about God, who made women perfect, and after job, didn’t fell like making man perfect too, so it’s just God’s who made the men bad guys and who now is taking care of this; less men, more women.
8. This chapter is about the world which don’t have many confidence in Bush and his government, because he’s doing things which just aren’t right. But he’s not the only one to blame because the older presidents also did lots of bad things. It’s also about the USA, who didn’t accept the plan of the Russians to stop dealing with nucleair weapons and after that the war never stopped. The war never stopped between the Jewish people and the people from Palestine, between Yugoslavia and the countries in that area and people in North Korea are dying because of to less food, this really have to stop. But one thing for sure: the USA is number one on many facts! For example in firearm deaths. Wow, to be proud of!
9. The ninth chapter is about the mistakes the police and the court of justice in America made; they killed many innocent people, which happens with executions too; innocent people, who die. Most of the time rich people can get away with everything, when poor and black people have to be in prison for years.
10. This one is about an earlier president and his influence; Bill Clinton. A president almost the same as Bush, but with a good image. Bush just does the things Clinton also did when he was president; Bush goes further with the things Clinton started, though he don’t have the charm Clinton had, so he can’t get away with something real fast, like Clinton did. When Clinton was on the end of his presidency he came up with some great ideas, just to look like a nice person, ideas which never could have made it. Moore also talks about Ralph Nader in this chapter, a democrat, for which Moore used to work in the eighties.
11. This chapter is about the fact that rich and famous people don’t care about things, until they get to deal with it theirselves, after that, people will change their opinions real fast. That’s why Micheal ask to god for some diseases in the Bush family, just for getting some sympathy.
12. This is the time when Moore blames himself for everything that happened in the USA; for Bush being president. He talks about Nader and the way he played his part in the elections, that he was the one who had the most impact, for both Gore and Bush, because he was too much danger for both of them. He was the only democrat versus Bush and Gore. And how things came to an end, the way Moore didn’t expect. The way Nader have had no impact at all. The book ends that Democrats and Republicans both don’t work, that there should be independent people, which could face their fears.
My Opinion

I think this is a wonderful, but not an easy book. It’s actually kind of a hard book to read, because he uses many words I never heard about. The things Moore is talking about really have made me thinking about it. That’s also the main point of the book in my opinion, to make people think about the things that are happening in this cruel world and I really think Moore is right by telling all this stuff, but sometimes he really makes it bigger as it is. The book is also really really funny, because he really is making fun of Bush and also about the problems he is talking about; for example when he is talking about the women who are going to overtake the world, he gives some funny advice to men not to disappear of the world. That’s the thing why I liked the book the most, because of the humor. Also a great part is there are some confessions about Bush, for example the way the elections went, which I never knew.

Which part of the book did you like best?

I like the part best in which is talked about women who are great and men are bad guys. That was a real funny part and the way Moore is talking about men and a mistake of god after finishing the great women is also funny, he gives advice to men and advice to women for living without men.

Which character did you like best?

I like the character of Micheal Moore himself best, because he has a great point of view of what is happening in the USA and the rest of the world. He’s not afraid to tell the truth about all the things that are happening now and he also brings it in a funny way and that makes it even better.

Could you identify with the (main) character?

In some way I can identify myself with Michael Moore, because I also think this world is full of problems, like a bad working government in many countries, caused by the rich and wealthy people and I talk about this with other people to, just to express your point of view about it.

Would you recommend the book to others?

Of course I would recommend this book to others; it’s a funny and great book. If you want to know more “nice” things about the “great” George Bush and his mates of the USA government you should surely read it. And if you are also interested in other problems of the USA and of other countries caused by presidents or people who are in some way connected to the government, you really should read it. It’s a way too funny book!

Was the book filmed?

No, the book wasn’t filmed, but Michael Moore made some movies himself with the same point of view used in the book and also many facts which I read in the book are also used in the film “Bowling for Columbine”, a film about the firearm homicides of the USA and why the number in the USA is much higher than in other countries; also a funny and great film which everybody should have seen.
