Why’d I chose this book:
After reading “can you keep a secret?” I started reading the first Shopaholic novel. That was also a very funny, not to harsh to read, book. I decided to read the second novel in this range in English.
First reaction:
The book has a sort of humor in it, that makes you wanna read on. So I was delighted to begin reading the second Shopaholic book.
Summary:
The story is beginning when Rebecca is packing for her short holiday break with Luke in Fenwicks. From the very start, her shopping and fashion addiction is clear. She thought it would be a nice idea to make a packing list, but she has too much. So she decides to go out shopping, so she will just be needing the thing she buys new. The problem is that she comes back with a whole lot of clothes, shoes and other stuff, so she eventually has too much to take with her. She decides to let her baggage be delivered in Fenwicks.
Luke has an appointment in the same hotel as they’re staying in. From a co-worker of Lukes company, Alicia, hears Rebecca that Luke is going to move to New York to extend his company. Rebecca is in shock, but she decides to wait with her reaction till Luke tells her the news himself. But, when they go home, Luke still hasn’t told Rebecca.
When Rebecca’s parents throw a dinner party for them and Rebecca & Luke, Luke cancels the appointment at the last moment. Rebecca’s parents don’t like that very much, because they have never seen Luke and the son of their neighbors, Tom, is getting married in a few weeks. They all think that Rebecca made Luke up, because they think Rebecca is silently in love with Tom. This isn’t the case.
The wedding is coming closer and, of course, she’s going to shop for the perfect outfit. Luke and Rebecca decided they would arrive separately to the wedding, because Luke has an business appointment right before the ceremony. But when the ceremony has ended and the party starts, Luke still isn’t there. She tries to call him, but she can’t reach him. Lucy, the bride, comes to Rebecca and asks her if Luke isn’t someone who doesn’t exist. She lies to Lucy and tells her he is already at the party. When someone shouts that he isn’t there at all, she runs away and cries. At that moment, Luke arrives. Rebecca tells him that she knows about his plans to move to New York. Luke tells Rebecca that he wanted to ask her to move there and live together. Rebecca is of course very happy.
Rebecca can’t tell anyone about their moving-plans to New York, because the deal isn’t yet closed.
Her parents and her best friend Suzy know the real truth, but on her work she says that she’s going on a holiday.
Once in New York, Rebecca tries to find a new job and there is a lot of choice: everybody wants her as a financial advisor on television. Of course the rest of the time is being spend by shopping, shopping for large amounts of money. She falls happily to sleep each night, but at one morning she wakes up and finds an article in the newspaper about her shopping addiction. When Luke reads the article, he becomes very mad. He doesn’t understand how she could be so stupid and after a little fight, he disappointed leaves the hotel. Of course the tv producers don’t want her anymore, because she should give people advise about their money. She decides to go back to England. But there she’s fired too and there are dozens of bills on her desk, that she has to pay. She’s totally back in her old pattern. She can’t find a new job and her bank doesn’t want to change her maximum debt.
She goes to one of Lukes companies, because Melanie, a friend of Rebecca works there. Melanie isn’t there, but she accidentally hears Alicia say some stuff that isn’t mend for Rebecca, nor Luke’s ears. Alicia is trying to pull Lukes costumers to her own (new) business. Rebecca calls a friend of Luke, and tells him what she heard. He has to tell Luke, but he can’t tell Luke that the news comes from Rebecca.
To her relay debts, Rebecca decides to sell much of her clothes. In the end, she has money left. She decides to go back to New York, because she could get a new job there: a job as personal shopper. A job that’s perfect for Rebecca.
On the end of the book, she has an appointment at 10 o’clock. It turns out to be Luke, who wants to make up. He heard from Michael (the friend of Luke) who saved his company and asks her to marry him. She says yes…
Characters
Rebecca Bloomwood: the main character in the book. She works at television, as a financial advisor. But her own financial stuff isn’t really good. She’s a real shopaholic. Luke Brandon is her boyfriend. Rebecca usually shops so much that she actually can’t even pay for it.
Luke Brandon: Rebecca’s boyfriend. He has his own company, Brandon Communications and works very hard. Not like Rebecca, Luke is very careful with his money (although he is very wealthy).
Suze Cleath Stuart: Rebecca’s roommate. Suze’s family is very wealthy and she often gives Rebecca (against her will) money. Suze designs frames for photographs.
Themes
Love, friendship, lying, shopping.
Explanation of the title:
Shopaholic goes abroad is easy to explain: Rebecca, an natural shopaholic moves from London to New York, abroad.
Point of view:
The story is told in the first person.
Judgment:
I liked the book, but not as much as the other two books I have read from Kinsella. But it was nice though. I came trough it without too much problems. I really recognize myself in Rebecca. That’s also an advantage, because I can move myself into her lifestyle and way of acting, that makes the reading easier.
