2. Summery
The story begins with a visit from Mom, Dad, Grandpa, Jimmy and his two little sisters and his little brother to the Saint Laurent Military Graveyard on the 6th of June in 1998.
Grandpa shows a lot of emotion when he sees all the graves, suddenly he was kneeling, praying on the ground.
In the end of the story I understood that the Grandpa in the 1st part of the book was Captain John H. Miller, when he had become very old, because the family visits the graveyard in the year 1998. Then, in the 2nd part you see the story through the eyes of Captain John H. Miller, it is described how the attack of the U.S.-military on D-Day began. On the 6th of June in 1944, 54 years earlier, hundreds of Companies with American soldiers are set off the Normandy-coast. The squads are dropped on Omaha Beach, but a lot of troops are dropped in the wrong spot, so the mission has failed for a part.
In part 3 the captain gets a public relations-mission from the Commanding Officer, namely
saving the private James Francis Ryan. The reason: his other three brothers were also killed in action for the Army, so the job is to get James out of the war and bring him home safely, where his mother is desperately waiting for her only left child. The government has to bring the private back home, to let the citizens see that the American Army is not that rough, and also pays attention to emotional feelings. So they have to do that to keep their good image. James is in the 101st Company, so he is one of the paratroopers who have been dropped wrongly. Miller makes a squad, which he thinks is the best with: Private Reiben, Private Daniel Jackson, the medic Wade, Private Anthony Caparzo, Private Stanley Mellish and the translater Corporal Tim Opham. They’re going to find that Ryan, however! Than, after a while they fin d the right person and he goes back to America, where his mother is still waiting for his return. 3. My opinion I think this book is very beautiful, mostly because it is so well-expressed, the words in the book are precisely showing the feelings which are described in the story. It’s also very educational, because you do get to know a lot more about D-Day. It’s very dramatical too, because sometimes it gets very bloody and scary.
