Name of writer:
Alan Sillitoe
Title book:
On Saturday Afternoon
Setting:
This story plays in the garden of a house of a boy.
Theme:
Decide over your own life and hang yourself.
Title explanation:
The whole story plays on a Saturday afternoon, so the title is related to the time.
My own opinion:
The story gives a nice view over how things can go in life, the man thinks he can decide over his own life, but then the cops show up, they say that he is not allowed to hang himself. They said to the man that he wasn’t boss over his own body. My opinion is that people should be boss over their own body, but only if they are capable of that.
Summary:
On a Saturday afternoon, a boy and his dad stayed at home when all the others of the family went to the pictures.
The boys’ dad was a black and sad man. He ‘told the boy to get some fresh air. When he got outside he spotted a man with a robe, he followed this man into a house. Inside the man told the boy he was going to hang him selves. The man tied a rope to a fitting on the ceiling. The boy tried to convince the man that the fitting wouldn’t hold, but the man wouldn’t believe him. He climbed on a chair while asking the boy to kick the chair from under his feet. The boy obeyed the man and kicked the chair from under his feet. The man hang there and then almost immediately fell down on the floor. The fitting didn’t hold his weight, it was too much for the fitting. The boy went outside, and there he saw a policeman. The policeman went into the house and said to the man that it is against the law to hang yourself. The man protested: “If I’m not allowed to hang myself, I’m not allowed to decide over my own life.” The policeman took the man with him to the hospital, where they put him under heavy guard. The guarding policeman went to the toilet for only a second and the man took his life in his own hand, he jumped out of the window, he died.
