1. Summary

The book “Matt’s million” is the story of a boy who became a millionaire overnight. His name was Matthew Collins, thought most people called him Matt. He was eleven years old, and he lived with his mother. The cheque arrived in the post. It said:

Dear Matthew,
I have great pleasure in enclosing a cheque, made out to your name, for the sum of £1,227,309.87.
I realise that the receipt of so large an amount may come as something of a surprise (thought I hope a pleasant one) and you will be wondering what has happened and why. However, the matter is somewhat complicated, and perhaps the best thing would be if you and your mother would be kind enough to call in to my office at your earliest convenience, so that I can explain.
Yours sincerely,
J Wattis.
Then he decided to go and see Claire. Claire lived next door and she was his best friend. Claire didn’t know what to do, and the two of them walked down to the offices of Wattis. Privately, Matt had come to the conclusion that the whole thing must be some sort of mistake, because he didn’t know where the money could possibly have come from.
Wattis explained everything. The previous year, Matt had had rheumatic fever, he was stuck in bed for three months and he went to be very bored. What saved Matt was his computer, an old one, but he made up his own game, Virus. It was a very simple game, but it was nice. And his grandfather sold his computer game, but he didn’t know. And he died last weak, so now it was for Matt. The game went on sale in Belgium, and it did make a profit, more than anyone had expected, but instead of giving the money to Matt, his grandfather decided to use it to have the game re~programmed, by professionals, so that it could be sold in America, and there it became a success too.
Matt opened an Account and maked a deal with his mum. He wouldn’t take something of the money, but the interest and new successes where his.
The big men in the computer games asked Matt to make a new game, but he had no time.
The first thing Matt decided to buy with his money, the first big thing at least, was a bicycle. And he bought Claire one too. But it made Claire feel he was trying to buy her. So that’s the first thing Matt had learned: Never buy a bicycle for your friend without asking them first.
Than he went to shop with Claire. He only wanted a new computer but after a few hours he had very much stuff. Money was no problem, but his whole room was full with toys and computerthings. So the second lesson was: Try to buy one thing at a time.
Matt had wanted a Rolls~Royce ever since he was seven, because he wanted to arrive in one at school. But a Rolls~Royce cost a lot of money, so Matt hired one, inclusive a driver, Henry. Every day Matt went to school in his car and a lot of children were looking when he arrived at school. Claire is always with him in the car. One day, they saw a boy, Maurice. He had missed the bus and was going to be too late for school. So they give Maurice a lift. But after school Maurice is there again, with his brother, and asked Matt if he did mind if they went back. Every day Maurice and his brother were there. And than the brother of Maurice took a friend with him and so the car wasn’t Matt´s anymore. Claire decided to take the bus again, because it was no more fun. But Matt couldn’t say no to the boys and so he stopped hiring the car. Matt missed having the car, of course, but it mattered a lot less than you might have thought.
But Matt already worked out another plan, a real big plan. He wanted to buy a house, a real big one, with pool and pin~ball machine etc. But the fourth lesson was to do not buy the house, because he wouldn’t be happy than. He would be far-gone from Claire, his best friend. He had to go to another school and his mother had to change work. Mr. Wattis thinks it’s smart to buy his own house, so his mum could stop with work (his mother never wanted to take money from him) and he would be still with Claire.
Now Matt knew having money is not as simple as the most people think. You would probably have to be a millionaire yourself, he thought, to realise it was possible to have a problem in the first place and not a perfect life. He could buy very much, but he missed something. Mr. Kawamura came to visit him, he was a real big Japanese boss in the computer games and he is a millionaire himself. He said: “Having money not important, fun is important, what you want is work, and not child work like school, but real work, like when you made the game.” Matt said: “That wasn’t work, that was fun!” “Real work, best fun in the world.” And Matt remembered he was very satisfied after he had finished the game. A really good feeling, and then he started to make a new game with Claire. And Matt´s mother felt there was a difference. The sparkle was back in his eyes, the animation back in his face, and he had lost that withdrawn, preoccupied expression. He looked happier than she had seen him for a long time.
2. Analysis.

Title: Because Matt became a millionaire (see summary) the title is logic.
Genre: Drama, because they tell the problems of having a million and everything in the life of Matt what changes.
Characters:
Matt: serious, smart.
Claire: sweet, always happy.
Mum: unassailable, serious, and busy.
Time: In one of these years.
Setting: Penguin Group, England 1995

Sorry, My analysis is very short, and my summary is very large. I think this is better, because my summary can be good now and if you have read it, you will understand the main characters.
3C.

This story could have really happened, but it’s not very logic. All the facts could be truth, but it happens not every day that an eleven years old boy becomes a million.
