Far from the Madding Crowd (Thomas Hardy)

Gabriel Oak was a shepherd on Norcombe Hill (in fact he had rented his sheep) when he first met Bathsheba by paying her toll. The girl went off without even thanking Gabriel. That same evening the shepherd saw her again when he discovered a light coming from a wooden hut. There were two persons in the hut who seemed to be Bathsheba Everdene and her aunt. From then on they kept meeting and Gabriel fell in love. But when he proposed she gave him a negative answer. Afterwards Bathsheba left to Weatherbury because she had inherited her uncle’s farm. But a disaster came to Gabriel when all of hi sheep, excited by his dog, had broken the gate and had fell in a deep hole. They were dead. So Gabriel sold all his farm tools to pay what he owed for the sheep. Now he had to find work on other men’s farms. He went looking for work in Weatherbury, where Bathsheba lived now. Once he arrived he saw a fire. He managed almost on his own to extinguish the fire. It seemed to be a part of Bathsheba’s property he had saved and so she gave him work as a shepherd and Gabriel settled in Weatherbury. That same night he met a girl who was very weak and later appeared to be a maid of Bathsheba’s who had ran off (Fanny Robin) to marry soldier Frank Troy.
When Valentine came Bathsheba send a card to her rich neighbour Mr.Boldwood as a joke. He fell in love with her and proposed her. She gave him, like Gabriel, a negative answer but he kept hoping one day Mrs. Everdene would be his wife.
At that same time soldier Troy became angry because his bride, Fanny Robin had come to late to her wedding day. He left his pregnant girlfriend.
A few days later sixty of Bathsheba’s sheep had broken through the gate and arrived in al field with clover, a green plant that can kill the animals if they eat a lot of it. But Gabriel could save them after he commanded his mistress to treat him in a polite way.
When soldier Troy arrives in Weatherbury Bathsheba is the first to meet him. She falls in love, which makes become Mr.Boldwood desperate but she doesn’t mind because she will marry Frank Troy and she will lead a very unhappy life. When Bathsheba needs her man the most he’s absent like the time the storm almost took away all the harvest but Gabriel managed to save it. Later Bathsheba will discover her man had almost been married to her maid, Fanny Robin. Now she knew also Fanny was the only woman Troy had ever loved. He met her again and made up an appointment but it was too late because she and her child had died because of weakness. They were buried at Weatherbury and soon after their dead Troy left. He went swimming and he had almost drowned when some sailors rescued him. His clothes were found and everybody thought Bathsheba was a widow now. Mr. Boldwood started hoping again but when Troy appeared again with Christmas Boldwood shot him down and the murderer left to Casterbridge to confess his crime. Now Frank rests besides his wife and child and Bathsheba decided to share her life with Gabriel who had taken over the farm of Mr. Boldwood.
