A dazzling urban satire of modern human relations? An ironic, tragic insight into the demise of the nuclear family? or the confused ramblings of a pissed thirty-something?

BRIDGET JONES’S DIARY BY HELEN FIELDING

I read the book ‘Bridget Jones’s diary’ written by Helen Fielding.
The book is the diary of the the main personage of the story, Bridget Jones. Bridget Jones is thirty-two, smoke if rage, drink in high tempo, her lovelife seems a permanent crisis situation, she is still bachelor and she is continuously reminded to that by her family and friends. She wants bring change in her life. Her good intentions for the new year are: to slim and search a nice, judicious man. Firstly she falls for her boss, Daniel Clever (the right man) and later for Mark Darcy (the man on the left). Every time she sees Una and Geoffry, they try to couple her to Mark Darcy. When they gave up, Bridget falls for him. Her mum has a crush on Julio, a weird guy. Bridget’s mum and Julio lend a lot of money of friends and they never pay back. When they leave to Portugal the police is looking for them. First Bridget’s mum returns to London and with Christmas, also Julio returns and the police can arrest him. And Bridget and Mark, they are going to celebrate Christmas on their one.

The tale was good, but it is too long-winded written. The first hundred pages are very nice to read, because you start at the story and then Bridget loves Daniel and it is still funny to read. But than it became insipid, approximately hundred pages without an interesting part. The last hundred pages were interesting again. This is the part about Bridget’s mum and Julio and Bridget and Mark Darcy.

Every day Bridget starts with giving her weight, the number of cigarettes, the number of calories, … When you read at the beginning of the chapter all these data, you know already if that day was a good or a difficult day. And most of the time you can guess what is going to happen. When you get all these data at the end of the chapter, the book would be more interesting.

A couple years ago I saw the film about this book, this gives me the opportunity to compare the book with the movie. For me personal the movie is much better than the book, because the book goes very slow and the part in the middle of the book is insipid. The film on the other hand has a higher tempo and is very funny.

Helen Fielding has written also an other story about Bridget Jones. This book ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason’ has already been filmed. It is a real must when you like romantic comedies.
