Chapter 1

1. What case was before the Court of Chancery?
The case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce.
2. Why had the lawyers lost interest in this case?
The case had never done anyone good.

Chapter 2

1. When were footsteps heard on the Ghost’s Walk?
When death or disgrace was coming to the Dedlock family these footsteps were heard.
2. “Nothing important has been decided” said Mr. Tulkinghorn. Who was Mr. Tulkinghorn? What was he talking about?
He was an old man, dressed in dull, black old fashioned clothes. He was Sir Leicester's lawyer. He was often at Chesney Wold and often at Sir Leicester's London house. He was talking about: the Jarndyce and Jarndyce case, Lady Dedlock was a claimant herself.
3. Lady Dedlock asked two questions about the handwriting on the law papers. What were the questions? What was the difference in the way in which she asked them?
Who copied these papers? spoken more quickly than usual and Is that writing called law hand? spoken in her usual careless way.
4. Why dit Mr. Tulkinghorn want to find the man who had written the papers?
He had to find out the secret of Mrs. Dedlock. Knowing a persons secret gave him power over the person.

Chapter 3

1. What was special about Krook’s Rag and Bottle shop?
Everything was bought and nothing was sold.
2. Why was Krook called Lord Chancellor?
Because he have so many things but, he never let anything go.
3. When would Miss Flite’s birds go free?
When she get her judgement.
4. What is strange about the name ‘Nemo’?
It's Latin for "no one!"
5. Mrs. Jellyby was too busy to look after her own children Why?
She thinks too mush about the natives of Africa.
6. Why did Mr. Tulkinghorn go to Krook’s shop?
To find out who copied the papers.
7. Why was Mr. Tulkinghorn going to tell Lady Dedlock about the death of Nemo?
He thought Nemo was a part of the secret of Lady Dedlock, by telling her about his death he would know for sure (looking at her face).

Chapter 4

1. A maid brought Esther the housekeeping keys. Why was Esther pleased?
Jhon Jarndyce trusted her.
2. Why had John Jarndyce decided to look after Esther?
She could be useful and helpful at Bleak House. He had heard of a good little girl, called Esther. She was an orphant, and he decided to look after her. He is her guardian and friend.
3. What was the case Jarndyce and Jarndyce about?
Now it's about money but, first about a will.
4. Why did John Jarndyce call his home ‘Bleak House’?
Jhon's uncle called it Bleak House because it was a very said place when he lived here.
5. Richard lay awake for a long time thinking of the future. What did he think about particularly?
The Jarndyce money, ones there must be a judgement at the court of Chancery.
6. Ada and Esther went with Mrs. Pardiggle to the brickmakers ‘ cottages. But they did not want to. Why?
They said rude things about Mrs. Pardiggle in loud voices. The poor really hated her. She read dull books to these poor people until they were tired and angry.

1. What was Tom-All-Alone’s?
It is the oldest dirtiest street in London, with the blackest dirtiest houses.
2. Why did people ask Jo questions about Nemo?
Nemo died, that’s why.
3. People like Mrs. Jellyby helped the poor people of Africa. Why did Dickens think this was not a good thing?
because she could also help Jo, Jo is poor, has not been to school, and cant read
4. The lady who spoke to Jo said that she was a servant. Did Jo believe her?
No, there is written: Jo knew very little, but she was not a servant
5. What two places did the lady want to see?
She wanted to see the place where Nemo had lived and the place where he was burried.

1 Why was John Jarndyce worried about Richard Carstone?
His ideas about life and money Richard had no plans for the future and he thinks he might have a lot of money.

To celebrate the engagemant between Richard and Ada.

Allan woodcourt, the same who had been called to help Nemo Allan was a quite good doctor.

He refused because he is reading and thinking about Jarndyce and Jarndyce and he want to become a lawyer.
3 When Esther saw Lady Dedlock in church, she had a strange
feeling. What did she remember?
Her unhappy childhood because the face reminded her of the hard woman who brought her up.
4 How did Mr Jarndyce, Esther and Ada meet Lady Dedlock?
It began to rain and they went inside a cottage lady Dedlock was also there.

Chapter 9

He wanted to become a soldier, he had grown tired of the Law. It will save him money.

No he was not. He talked to Richard for hours to change his mind. There was nothing he could do.
3 John Jarndyce said to Richard and Ada: 'From now on you must
be cousins only.' What did he mean?
It was wrong to be engaged any longer. From now on they were not engaged any longer.

1 Jo said: 'She looks like the other lady.' What 'other lady' was he
thinking of?
The lady he took to the burial-ground

It could kill, or completely take away a woman's beauty

Esther had scars of her illness in her face. The illness took her beauty, that’s why they had taken her looking glass away.

Lawyers had told him that his guardian was his enemey. He was told that John wanted the money al for himself
5 What had happened to Miss Flite's family?
They al expected a judgement. But they are all dead now.

She knows the Court pulls people towards it. They cannot stay away. She knows the signs. This signs she saw in Richards face. He must be stopped before the case will ruin him

The illness had changed her face to much. No man would think she was beautiful enough to marry.

Chapter 11

The handkerchief Esther left in Jenny's cottage

secret?
Sir Leicester was a proud man and the disgrace of his wife would kill him. So the secret had to be kept for Sir Leicester.

This cruel woman was Lady Dedlock's sister
4 Why did Esther run in fear from the Ghost's Walk?
This terrace belongs to Chesney Wold, the house of Sir Leicester and Lady Dedlock. When footsteps were heared on the hard stones of the Ghost's Walk , death of disgrace was coming . Esther heard her own footsteps.

Chapter 12

1 Who was the 'great lady' in Mr Tulkinghorn's story meant to be?
Who was the servant meant to be?
Mrs Dedlock was the great leady and the servant was Lay Dedlock's own servant Rosa
2 Why did the girl's father in Tulkinghorn's story take his daughter
away from the lady's house?
He would not allow his daughter to live in the same house as the great lady who had disgraced her husband.
3 Why had Mr Tulkinghorn told this story?
He wanted Lady Dedlock to know thad he knew her story.

He asked her to marry him.

She burned the dried flowers she had become from Allan Woodcourt. This was her answer to the letter. She decided to marry her guardian.

Richard asked her how she could marry a man like John Jarndyce. Richard hated him.

Chapter 16

Tulkinghorn was murdered?
She had followed him. She stood outside his door and had wished to kill him.
2 The servant told Lady Dedlock that Mr Bucket had been with Sir
Leicester. What did Lady Dedlock immediately think?
She thought her husband knew about her disgrace.

That lady Dedlock was gone to London and she had changed her clothes with Jenny.

Him was Nemo the father of Esther. Nemo was a poor man.

Chapter 18

That Richard will not live to see his child.
