Facts
The title of the book is ‘The adventures of Huckleberry Fin’. The book is about Huckleberry Fin, about everything he goes through. So these things are the adventures of Huckleberry Fin. Mark Twain wrote the book, and it was published by Blackbirds in 1988. The book has got 304 pages. I think the book is nice for many people, but there are lots of difficult words used, and also a strange dialect. But the story is meant for many people. The story is set in the area around the Mississippi. The story is set in the time they still used niggers to do all the things in and around the house. It can’t be found in the book but it must be around 1930.
... We schrouched down and laid still. Miss Watson’s big nigger, named Jim, was setting in the kitchen door; we could see him pretty clear, because there was a light behind him. He got up and stretched his neck out about a minute, listening. Then he says: ‘Who dah?’ ...
Now they don’t have such “niggers”, maybe just people to clean houses or something but they don’t call them niggers.
I don’t know exactly the time that is covered in the book, I think it might be around one or two years, but I’m not sure. It isn’t very clear in the book.

Something about the main characters:

Huckleberry Fin
Huck is a nice boy. Sometimes he is a little bit naive, he thinks everyone will be kind to him. Also he can’t lie at all, by example a woman from the family where he stays immediately tells him not to lie when he does. Huck is a good thinker, he can make very well plans to release, far further, or other things. He’s fourteen.

Jim

Jim is the nicest person on earth. He never hurts someone and is always nice and friendly to other people. He misses his wife and children very much and cries a lot because of that.

Tom Sawyer
Tom Sawyer is also a nice person. But he reads a lot, and wants to do everything the way it’s in his books. So when there’s a schoolclass having picnic, he says there are thousands of elephants, a king and very very much people (like it is in Don Quichot). And if they want to release Jim they do it the difficult way, with digging and sawing. But the easier way is to steal the key and release Jim that way.

The Duke and the King

The Duke and the King are frauds, they fraud everyone and everything that crosses their way. They aren’t nice persons, and Jim and Huck wanted to get rid of them as soon as possible. They don’t tell anything about their appearance in the book, and none of them changes in the book.

Summary:

Huckleberry Fin is a boy. He lives in the house of a widow. Tom Sawyer is his best friend, and they set up a gang of robbers. They want to kill people and such kind of things, but they don’t do anything like that. Then Huck’s father comes around, he’s always drunk. He takes away Huckleberry Fin and they live in a shed next to a river. Then Huck releases himself and he rafts to an island, there he meets Jim, he also ran off. Together they witness all kind of things. By example: they find a wreck and there are three man in it, and two of them want to kill the other one. But how? They decide to go away and then the wreck will flood and the men will drown. Huck hears it all and he escapes with Jim as soon as possible. Huckleberry saves Jim several times, and Jim Huck also. One time they have lost each other. Huck finds a house and lives there for a few days. He thinks Jim is dead, but Jim isn’t and Huck and Jim find each other again, and so on. Than Jim and Huck meet the Duke and the King (one says he’s actually the Duke of Bridgewater, and the other should be King of France). They are frauds and Jim and Huck want to get rid of them as soon as possible, and finally they do. But Jim is caught and he stays with a family, Huck decides to try to help him. So Huck stays with that family, they think he’s Tom Sawyer because Tom is their nephew and he should visit them. Later Tom arrives also, but Huck meets him first and tells him what’s going on and Tom tells his family that he is Sid, Toms brother. They’re very glad to have them both with them. They trY to release Jim, and they succeed in it. But Tom has got a bullet in his leg so the doctor has to come. The doctor really needs help, so Jim helps him, and the doctor takes Jim and Tom back to the family. Tom tells that Jim is already free for two months, because Miss Watson died. Jim and Huck stay with the family forever.

My opinion about the book:

I think it’s a very nice book. I just was annoyed because there were used several accents; nigger Jim talked just bad English, and many other people talked a dialect. By example, they say we was instead of we were. But the story itself was very funny and nice. It was a story without flashback, I don’t like them, so that made the story even more better. I liked the funny discussions between Jim and Huck, they didn’t matter at all but I liked them!
Example (Huck tries to explain Jim that French men talk different from they do.):
‘Looky here, Jim; does a cat talk like we do?’
‘No, a cat don’t.’
‘Well, does a cow?’
‘No, a cow don’t, nuther.’
‘Does a cat talk like a cow, or a cow talk like a cat?’
‘No, dey don’t.’
‘It’s natural and right for ‘em to talk different from each other, ain’t it?’
‘’Course.’
‘And ain’t it natural and right for a cat and a cow to talk different from us?’
‘Why, mos’ sholy it is.’
‘Well, then, why ain’t it natural and right for a Frenchman to talk different from us? You answer me that.’
‘Is a cat a man, Huck?’
‘No.’
‘Well, den, dey ain’t no sense in a cat talkin’ like a man. Is a cow a man? – er is a cow a cat?’
‘No, she ain’t either of them.’
‘Well, den, she ain’t got no business to talk like either one er the yuther of ‘em. Is a Frenchman a man?’
‘Yes.’
‘Well, den! Dad blame it, why doan’ he talk like a man? You answer me dat!
That’s also my favourite part of the book. I think it’s very funny and it describes Jim and Huck perfectly. Jim, very stubborn, and Huck, always trying to help everyone.

Essential Words

Reckon = Vermoeden. The writer uses reckon almost every sentence, so it’s important to know that word.
Raft = Vlot. Raft is also used very much, and the whole story is about the raft.
Duke = Hertog. ‘The Duke’ is a person, and it’s handy to know what a duke is.
King = Koning. The same as Duke.
Fellow = Gast, kerel. Fellow is also a word that’s used very much, sometimes also when it isn’t necessary.
And = En. It’s almost every sentence used, too. So it’s quite a useful word.
