Meer informatie
Writer: John Grisham
Title: The firm
Publisher: Century 1991
Type: Thriller
Theme: The dark side of the mind. First reaction: I still had to read one book for English and I was already thinking about reading this book when the film was on the television. I watch it and I really liked the film so I decided to read this book. It also fitted into the theme / genre I was reading so I started reading it. I really liked the book it has great plot and is seizing until the end. I think the plot is even better as in the film. It is a quite realistic story but not like it would go in real life. The characters are described very well just as the space it takes place in. Getting in to depth: A. The firm Bendini, Locke & Lambert offer Mitchell Y. McDeere a great job with a very promising future as a lawyer. After working there for a while, the FBI contacts Mitch. They tell him the firm is part of the Mafia, namely the Morolto family. They ask him to co-operate with them, so they can nail the firm and with them the Morolto’s. But Mitch does not really believe them at ones but after they tell him some things he changes his mind but does not tell them that yet. He tells the firm about the visit the FBI paid him and then acts like nothing happened for a while. The FBI starts putting pressure on him to co-operate with them and he then makes a deal with them. If they pay him one million-dollar and get his brother Ray out of prison he will deliver them the clean files, after that he wants an other half a Million when he tells them where the dirty files are and the last half a million when they have them. Mitch does what ever the FBI says, but after some time the security part of the firm becomes suspicious and besides that his car house and office are bugged they start following him around. He outsmarts them when he has to meet with the FBI and tries to get copies of dirty files without them noticing. He has found out that they keep dirty files in one of the firms’ condos on the Caymans he then sets up a plan to get them. With the help of his wife and Tammy or Doris witch is her name to contact him. When Avery goes to the Caymans for business Tammy is there as well and hooks up with him. She drugs him and then gets his keys makes copies of them and starts copying files together with Abby. Everything goes as plant. The FBI gets Ray out of jail and Mitch sends them the clean files. The Morolto’s did not trust the McDeere case and asked their moll in the FBI if Mitch was talking. They paid their moll money for the information but the FBI had found out and knew they knew just in time. The Morolto family already had a plan to eliminate Mitch he was supposed to go on a business trip to the Caymans and they would let the plain crash in the middle of nowhere above the sea. Tarrance Wallace the FBI cop Mitch had been talking to al the time called Mitch just in time to warn him and he got away. He calls Tarrance when he has got writ of the mob that he is running and will let them know where he is later on he then calls Tammy and gives her a plan for his brother and his wife to get lost. He gets lost and now the FBI and the Mafia are after him he finishes some business and then meets up with his wife and Ray who by then are on the most wanted list for rape and robbery of a woman. The woman was one of the people of the Mafia that was following Abby. They are at that moment in Panama City Beach. The FBI and the Mafia soon find out that they are there and start looking for them they put up photos and composites of them and put warnings in every newspaper. The Mafia then sets up a list to get the FBI out of town and the FBI falls for it. The Mafia now is free to move and start opening every door of most of the motels but luckily do not get to the room where the McDeeres are staying. Then Mitch calls Tammy where they are and gives her instructions to send their fake ID’s to the right motel and to warn Tarrance they are in the wrong place. When they have their fake ID’s they manage to get away at night by boat with the help of Abanks they sail to the Little Cayman and there they stay for a while. Tammy informs Tarrance where the dirty files are. Tammy sends them there the newspaper with the story about the indicting of the firm and some of the members of the Morolto family. So now Mitch Abby and Ray will live on the boa sailing around until they find a save place to hide and live for the rest of their lives. The End
B. Mitchell Y. McDeere: young clever man the main character of the book. He is very smart and good looking comes from a poor background and now is/ was a successful lawyer. Abby McDeere: The wife of Mitch she is an intelligent and pretty woman who helps her husband to get out of the mess they/ he is in. Ray McDeere: The older brother of Mitch a convict he is in jail for killing a man in a bar fight. He is smart, speaks six languages fluently and looks a lot like Mitch. Tammy Hemphil: Used to be Eddy Lomaxs’ secretary but after he got killed becomes Mitchs’ help. She nearly forty has dyed hair and big boobs. Tarrance Wallace: An FBI agent he has been on this case for some years now and wants to make a success out of it. He is not always very smart but has some good ideas. Abanks: A dark Caribbean man who owns a diving lounge his son got killed together with two lawyers of the firm. He helps the McDeeres to escape. The story is told from the point it needed to be told from to get the plot most of it is written trough the eyes of Mitch but not all of it. C. The theme I am reading books from right now is “the dark side of the mind”. I think the link to this theme is that Mitch has to choose between evil and less evil. On one side is the Mafia the other the FBI. He makes the choice to co-operate with the FBI but without knowing he already had chosen to work with the mob. And in the end he manages to escape both of them and taking money from them both by doing so he decides to do what is best for him and letting them both down. I think that was the dark side of his mind the part the FBI nor the Mafia good get to. D. 1. 1991 2. John Grisham used to be a lawyer he now writes thrillers about law firms and things like that. The firm was a best selling thriller debut that has nearly ever happened before. Other book of him are The Pelican Brief and The client he has written more but I do not know those tittles. 3. -------- 4. His books are al about this kind of things I have not read them but my father has and I am planning to read them as well. 5. -------- My opinion 1. Nearly al of it I really liked the plot and the way it was told. 2. I liked the part near the end best it was written quickly and seizing. 3. There were no elements that I really did not like but I did think the end was not the best end I have read. 4. I can I have seen the film several times I like them both but think the plot of the book is better especially the end because that was way more realistic in the book then in the film although Mitch was better of in the end of the film. Besides that I have not read any of his other book yet so I can not compare the book with them. 5. I think it is a good theme and that the story was different then most of the books I have read. It was very different from Dracula witch was the same theme. 6. I think the book was easy to read but there where some legal words that I did not know but those did not bother me to get everything in the book. Besides that it was written very seizing so I did not want to stop until I had finished the book. 7. I find it a very good book it is not too hard to read and because the plot is seizing you will keep on reading until you have finished. 8. Yes I would I think a lot of people my age will love it especially when they have seen the film. Why? Well because it is easy to read and exciting until the end.
