Introduction

I’ve chosen to talk about Greenland, because I wanted to bring some diversity into this lesson about islands. Most popular are the tropical and tourist places, but I want to show that other places can be interesting too. Greenland hasn’t got many facilities, the weather isn’t very attractive and we never hear a thing about it. In fact there aren’t many hotels, but there is an ice-hotel sine the year 2000. It’s build out of ice, including the furniture.
Greenland is a very big island, so it’s a little bit strange that it remains a mystery to many of us. I also think that Greenland is interesting because it has the oldest landscape, which is very beautiful.

General information

Though it geographically lies on the continent of America, Greenland is a part of Denmark and part of the European Union. Its capitalcity is Nuuk. It’s situated in the North, where the Atlantic meets the Arctic Ocean. That means that Greenland is surrounded by the water of the ocean. This, combined with the cold from the inland ice, gives Greenland its arctic climate. 85 percent of the island exists out of ice cap. The climate is also very dry, and this means that the same temperature feels much warmer there then in Europe. Greenland is the biggest island of the world, it’s about 50 times bigger then Holland, but because of the cold climate, theredon’t live many people. The current population rate is 55 000 inhabitants, which means a population density of 0.03 inhabitants per square kilometre. Not only because of the weather, but also because of the polar darkness, Greenland isn’t attractive to live.

Oddities

In some regions the sun doesn’t rise for a whole three months. But at some places it’s light around the clock, depending on how far north you are. This fascinating phenomenon is called ‘midnight sun’. The northern lights are no less impressive. White, yellow, green and red they sweep across the dark sky. Northern lights appear all year round in Greenland, but they can only be observed against a clear, dark night sky

Fauna and Flora

There are many kinds of plants on this island, but trees are rare. Because of the cold climate, there are kinds of animals you don’t see here in Europe like seals , musk oxen and ofcourse ice bears, but they’re more often on the north-side. Reindeer live all over the ice-free parts of Greenland. Walruses are seen in north and east Greenland. The northeastern part of Greenland is a protected national park. With a size larger than England and France put together, it's the largest national park in the world. Polar bears, walruses, reindeer, musk oxen and wolves live here together with smaller animals and many bird species.

Culture

The original inhabitants of Greenland are the Eskimo’s, but nowadays there also live many Danish people. They speak mostly Greenlandish or Danish. Ninety percent of the inhabitants live on the less cold part of Greenland, namely the south. Hunting and fishing is a very important occupation in Greenland. Greenland is a primitive island, but with the support of Denmark, it has developed itself into a more modern state. Almost every inhabitant belongs to the Evangelic-Lutherean Church.

Outdoor activities

Greenland has a potential for outdoor adventures because of its great landscape. The arctic scenery is breathtaking and almost endless on the island. Hikers can find unspoiled scenery and challenges. Greenland is also a paradise for anglers. There it’s quite possible to hook record-size catfish and halibut.

The kayak was originally developed by hunters in Greenland, and now it’s a popular activity. But that’s not all. Ofcourse you can climb mountains in Greenland with its arctic landscape. There you can find mountains from up to 2000 metres and it’s also possible to climb down into the icecap, which can be a great experience.
