First I will tell you about the home multimedia systems that are available today, how they are used and some technical facts about them. Then I will tell you about the home multimedia systems that will be available in the near future, how they will be used and some technical facts about them. At last I will tell you about how the new features will change our way of using multimedia systems

Today multimedia systems are most used in living rooms and bedrooms but you can also find them in company buildings, restaurants and stores .2 en .3
There are a lot of different multimedia systems available today, variating from simple DVD players to advanced mini multimedia computers. Here are some examples: This is the one of the newest DVD players from Philips; it can record on DVD discs but also on the build-in hard disk. It also has some nice features like Flextime, with that you can see the beginning of a program when the end is recorded, you can also take some pause without missing parts of the program you are watching. This is the Sony Home Theatre system DAV- LF1. This is one of Sony’s newest systems with 4 design speakers, one subwoofer, 600W digital amplifier, wireless connections and a head unit who can play DVD’s, videotapes, cd’s and it also has an build-in radio tuner. As you can see this multimedia system isn’t only very functional but it also has a very nice design. This is the MSI Mega 865 multimedia computer. It’s an all in one system for multimedia. It has a build in Radio tuner, Audio CD player, MP3 CD player, remote control, TV tuner and digital display. On the inside there is a Intel Northwood 3.2ghz processor 2.0GB memory, a 5.1 sound card, digital sound output, Video card with 128mb of memory, a 100mbit network controller, a wireless network controller and a 56k6 modem. This is one of the first systems with a total integration of a multimedia system and a computer. This is the Narrowcasting system from N-Store, N-Store is using high end multimedia systems in stores and restaurants. The system is installed worldwide in different types of stores. The content of the system can be remotely changed by N-Store’s specialists in the head office in the Netherlands. This makes the Narrowcasting system very wanted by big companies with a lot of store’s cause they only have to send new content to N-Store and within an hour the content is on all the screens in al the stores of the company around the world. 3.4
With systems like the MSI Mega 865 and the Narrowcasting system from N-Store the first steps into a new dimension in multimedia has been made, in the near future we will see more systems like this and home multimedia will become far more professional. In the near future we will be able to see what we want to with video on demand. Video on demand means we can choose whatever video we want to see and the video will be streamed to us. With that the television stations will become datacenters full of shows, films, documentaries and other types of videos. They make a program of film and we can see it whenever we want, we can even pause it and see the rest an other time. Within a few years everyone also will have an HDTV which means High Definition Television. The televisions we have in our homes today are analog because an analog signal comes into our houses and we need an analog tuner. A HDTV is completely digital, the tuner is digital and also are the other incoming connections like from a dvd player and systems like the MSI Mega 865. With that inputs the HDTV also can show a higher resolutions with much more quality. Another big change in the near future is that a lot more things will work wireless. With that our tv can connect with our computer and the computer can connect with movie databases or live streamed video’s from around the world. Also with wireless connections systems will be much smarter and work together like they didn’t before. 4. Imagine your watching your favorite movie with video on demand and then the phone rings. Your movie will automatically pause till your phone call has been ended and then you can watch the rest of your movie without missing anything. Nowadays we should have to turn the tv off, answer the call, and miss a lot of the movie. This is just one of the things that will change our way of using multimedia. 5. At last we can say multimedia systems will be a lot more intelligent in the near future and we will have a lot more choices in what we will see and hear. We also don’t have to miss anything we don’t want to and the quality will be much higher. We surely can say the multimedia systems will make a big technological boost in the upcoming years.
