Dear Sir/Madam,
I read your advertisement in the Dutch newspaper Trouw of 18 April 2004, whereas you asked for youth leaders to work in one of your holiday camps during the summer. I can tell you that I am very much interested in such a job.
I am an 18-year-old Dutch girl. Presently, I am in the fifth form of a grammar school and I hope to pass my grammar school exam in May of next year. My summer holidays start on July 5 which means that I will be available from July 8th until August 28th at the latest since school starts again on September 2nd.
The main reason for my application is that I like to work with children. After grammar school I intend to start my studies at a teachers training college in order to become a teacher at a primary school, so this would be a valuable experience for me. I already have some experience in dealing with children in other ways. At home I have been a member of Scouting Holland for eight years now and for the last three years I have been a member of the staff with our local boy scouts. In this capacity I have frequently helped to organize all sorts of activities such as sporting events, endurance and survival tests etc.
Perhaps I should also mention that I like swimming and that I have two life-saving certificates as well as a first-aid certificate. Having attended a grammar school for nearly five years now, I think it is fair to say that my English is not too bad and that I don’t expect any problems in making myself understood or in understanding the children.
In case you decide to take me on as a youth leader, I would like to receive some information as to what kind of work is expected of me, what kind of accommodation I will be housed in and if I will be paid any money or given a travelling allowance.

klopt inderdaad wat beaubv zegt je mag geen holland schrijven er zit een groot verschil tussen holland en The Netherlands, de verwarring komt omdat veel mensen uit het buitenland naar de provincies noord-holland en zuid-holland gaan dus zeggen ze we gaan naar holland

shit, deze engels brief opdracht kregen wij vorrige week op school..jammer dat ik je brief nu pas lees en niet daarvoor toevallig.
k vind het héél goed (vooral als je mijn brief hebt gelezen met mijn beroerde bagger engels)
voor de rest staat bij t commetaar dat Holland niet mag. ik geloof dat dat klopt en je mag idd niet met I beginnen hebben wij ook geleerd (en ik deed het ook in mijn brief en het is fout gerekend door mn lerares)
en dat voor de datum de plaats hoort te staan slaat nergens op dat in in het nederlands en JUIST niet in het engels.

Als het goed is mag je holland wel gewoon normaal plaatsen en in een engelse formele brief mag je wel met I beginnen. Kijk maar op examenvoorschriften engels van de afgelopen jaren.

Het viel me trouwens ook op dat je de brief begint met "I". Nou weet ik dat dit in een Nederlandse formele brief niet is toegestaan. Vandaar dat ik het in een engelse brief ook nooit zo toegepast heb. Voor zover ik weet is het in geen enkele formele brief toegestaan of in ieder geval ongepast om met jezelf (Ik, of in dit geval "I") te beginnen.

Een paar opmerkingen over je brief:
Zoals Chris al zei is Holland niet goed, er hoort Netherlands (zonder 'the'!) te staan.
Voor de datum hoort de plaats te staan waar de brief geschreven is.
Er worden te weinig verbindings woorden gebruikt (zoals: nonetheless, however, hence, as a matter of fact etc.)
'I hope I will receive your answer soon.' is niet fout maar ik prefereer:
'I look forward to hearing from you'

Beste Babber,
mooie brief, lang geleden dat je deze hebt geschreven. Misschien toch interessant te weten dat je 'a 18-year-old-girl' dient te veranderen in 'an 18-year-old-girl'.
Dit omdat 18 met een klinker begint, automatisch verander 'a' dan in 'an'.
Hoop dat je er nog wat aan hebt, misschien heeft iemand anders je er in de tussentijd al op gewezen. :-)
