The boy in the striped pyjama’s is written by the Irish novelist John Boyne. John was born in Dublin on the 30th of April 1971. He has written 7 novels for adults and 3 for children, their published in 46 languages. He has won 5 awards in total and he has been nominated for 15. The boy in the striped pyjama’s is one of his novels for younger readers, he wrote it in 2006 and since then it’s sold more than 5 million times. It’s published by David Fickling Books.
The boy where it is all about, Bruno, has a friend in a camp (Auswitz). Shmuel is his name and he is wearing striped pyjama’s every day. Well, Bruno thinks they are striped pyjama’s, but actually they are just suits you have to wear in such a camp as Shmuel is in. This explains the title of the story.
a 9-year-old boy called Bruno is growing up during World War II in Berlin. He lives in a big house with his parents, his twelve-year-old sister Gretel, and maidservants. His father is a high-ranking SS officer who is promoted to Commandant, and the family has to move away to a place called Auschwitz
When Bruno gets there, he feels homesick. He is unhappy with his new home and becomes lonely. One day, Bruno notices a group of people all wearing the same striped pyjamas and striped hats. He asks who these people are and his father tells him that these people are not real people at all, they are Jews. Thanks to their home teacher, Gretel has changed from a normal young girl into a strong Nazi, but Bruno doesn’t seem to care about it as much as his sister.
Bruno finds out he is not allowed to explore the back of the house. Due to curiosity and boredom, he decides to explore anyway. He sees a boy on the other side of a fence. Bruno introduces himself and finds out the Jewish boy's name is Shmuel. Shmuel and his family were brought here and forced to work in Auschwitz. Almost every day, the two boys meet at the same spot. Soon, they become best friends.
Bruno’s mother wants to go back to Berlin, because she found out about the destroying camp. The day before they leave, they find out that Bruno is missing. Bruno went under the fence to look for Shmuel’s father, who’s missing. Shmuel got him striped pyjama’s and Bruno left his clothes at the other side of the fence. Unfortunately, Bruno and Shmuel picked a wrong day, because it’s ‘shower’-day.
This was such an amazing book! I loved it, but I also got tears in my eyes. Bruno is so clueless, he just couldn’t understand why Shmuel was there.. poor boy. I also have seen the movie, it’s just as beautiful as the book.
